The Dagger - NCAAB

This seemed a bit of a formality, given the fact that Bob Knight told IU to take that lawsuit-settling alumni money and shove it, but I suppose formalities have to be handled formally. And so it is that Bob Knight officially called IU athletic director Fred Glass yesterday and told him he would not be attending an IU Hall of Fame induction ceremony in his honor in November. Ouch:

Glass said Knight said he was concerned the media interest in his attendance would take away from others being inducted. Along with Knight, Steve Downing, Katrin Koch, Joe Norman, Mike Rabold, Alan Somers and Jerry Yeagley are also entering the Hall of Fame.

"I absolutely respect his feelings on that and very much appreciate his response, which in no way suggested he opposed being inducted," Glass said.

In a statement released by the university, Glass also added, "Coach Knight expressed his tremendous appreciation for the support his teams were given by the IU student body and fans all over the state of Indiana and the contribution that support made to the success of his teams. Coach Knight also noted that there is no one he appreciates more than his players, who he said were the most responsible for the success the program had during his tenure."

That's a very nice, political response from Knight, but come on now. Really? That's the reason? If there's anything we know about Bob Knight, it's that he doesn't mind the occasional camera in his face. Were media attention something he were trying to defray, he wouldn't carry these things out to their furthest possible endpoint. He wouldn't keep people on their edge of their seats for months after the initial invitation. And he certainly wouldn't have taken a gig with ESPN, which as a member of the media, tends to involve a fair amount of media face-time.

No, of course not. The reason is obvious: Knight still doesn't want all that much to do with Indiana. Or, if he does, he wants his return to the school to be on his terms. This is how Knight operates. Which is fine for him, I suppose; it's not his fault so many IU fans still want some sort of symbolic return to happen now that the ebullient Tom Crean is the program's figurehead. It's those fans' faults for keeping this thing up for so long when it should have been let go years ago. But more than anything, the way this has been handled is on Knight. IU couldn't have been more conciliatory to the man. If he doesn't appreciate that, he's never going back.

I applaude Bobby Knight. He does not need Indiana's feeble attempt at an apology - this back door , end run by the alumni and university to get Knight to attend is transparent. Knight won't set foot at Indiana until the university rights the wrong they have done.

Eamonn, you are not talking about the majority of IU supporters who follow the team closely, based on what I've been reading on most of the websites lately. Other than hitman above, most of them have been pretty blech about the whole thing.
You must be talking about the fat cat supporters.

Indiana didn't need to apologize to this bully. They did nothing wrong to this turd. He was a big stomping, screaming baby and he got exactly what he deserved. I hope that Tom Crean can quickly turn around this program so people will stop pining for the glory days of Bob Knight. People seem to forget, the last several Indiana teams Knight had weren't all that great. The game has passed him by and kids don't respond to that style of coaching anymore.

To Jason S., are you a coach, I feel that you are not....his ability to coach is not gone nor his method of coaching. I am and always will be a Hoosier, no matter who coaches. The last few teams werent that great because he made the mistake of asking cry babies come to his program. Look at Purdue, Notre Dame and other major successful Basketball Universities....same coaching style, same winning ways (defense and control offense), Too many I do that, I do this type players..I think the reason Knight stepped down at Texas Tech was because he was tired.....Knight always coached Team or We play this way and a few kids he had didnt want that style. I know if you ask his players a few questions about loyalty, respect, hard work and how to become a good citizen, they mention Bob Knight taught them all those things and they back him today. But, those teams knew what it took to be a team and win. I dont blame Bob Knight for not attending the ceremony or step foot in Indiana for that matter.

Who are these people? You never even mentioned them in the story.
Thanks for proving Knight's point that no one would pay attention if he were there.

Cloggerhead just has to take every opportunity to jab at Knight. Admit it,Clogger, you've hated Knight since Pat dumped your mom behind the Regulator when she was throwing herself at him. Had Knight NOT contacted Fred, you'd be chastising Knight. Had Knight appeared and made some deserved jabs at certain former IU trustees and other worthless employees, you'd be chastising Knight. The only way you wouldn't have written another "I hate Knight" column was if Knight had showed up and kneeled before your newest hero, Crean. Of course, you last two heroes, Davis and Sampson, did just so much for the IU legacy, didn't they?

Could it be that Knight was just saying exactly what he thought and all you smug clairvoyant cynics have it wrong. Look at the media circus every time he does anything. The other inductees are some of the greatest contributors to Indiana sports ever. I'm sure a know it all like Brenan is eminently aware of this, but for the rest... Jerry Yeagley is probably the greatest college soccer coach ever. He’s won twice as many national championships as Knight and supported Knight and Indiana football, even though those less successful teams got all the PR around campus & the state. Can't the media wrap their pin heads around the fact that Knight's staying away out of respect for this great guy? Steve Downing is one of his favorite players. In the very beginning of Knight's tenure at IU, Downing carried those teams on his back. A long time assistant athletic director and quiet tower of strength, Downing never was on any of the great teams. This is his crowning moment in IU sports. I'm sure Knight would want to be there to support him, but not to take one ray of light away. All these inductees are great people, what is it about the media that they can profess to see the outcome of whole seasons, but they couldn't recognize real greatness if it bit them on the **s?,

Hitman .... hit the target... and few others commenting on Knight.... like him or not Knight ... is great coach... IU got it wrong firing him... there was a better way to the problem at the time... but the IU Presz want show he had balls... and could fire Knight regardless of what it would do to the basketball program.... and that is in a state that loves the game.. impossible to understand... media folks like it... gives them something to write about because of Knight's dislike for the media... Knight is not perfect... we all know it... but not attending hall of fame event ... was correct... and his statement about his players.... is truly Knight...way.... doubt all of his former players are against Knight... wonder if media folks ever thought about speaking with Knight's players... i would bet most would say their time with Knight was difficult at times but well worth it.... AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED... KNIGHT RAN A CLEAM PROGRAM... HELLO MEDIA FOLKS... AND KNIGHT HATERS.. give the bubba a break.... he is and was a winner... the right way too.

Bob Knight was IU basketball. IU basketball hasn't been the same since knight left. Its hard saying if IU basketball will ever be anything close to what it was with Bob Knight as coach.

Of all the coaches in any sport, i hate and despise this man the most of any of them. I have no concern or care how many games he won, what his knowledge of the game was, etc. He was a big (TURD), most people in Indiana (who cares what anyone else thinks) consider him a (TURD). I'm glad he is not coming back to Indiana. My hopes are that he will stay away forever.

Didn't Coach Knight learn anything about Michael Jordan's baseball experience?
