The Dagger - NCAAB

So, you know that whole "trying to lure Bob Knight back by settling his $75,000 outstanding legal claim against Indiana University" thing? Bigtime no-go:

"The Indiana University administration recently made a public announcement on a very private issue that I was being sent a check for $75,000 from alumni donations to cover expenses I incurred as an employee at Indiana University," Knight said in a statement. "Indiana University has refused for nine years to take care of their obligation in this matter. I did not know until [Monday] that this check was sent to my attorney. Upon finding out about it, I immediately gave him instructions to send the check back.

"In all the years I coached at Indiana and elsewhere, I never accepted a thing from alumni and I don't intend to start now," Knight said in the statement. "This issue is with the university, not with the alumni."

The whole reason Mr. Anonymous Indiana Alumni even sent the check was to pave the way for Knight's return to the school in time for Knight's Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Nov.. No legal claim, no reason to stay away, right?

Only one little problem: Bob Knight is still Bob Knight. And if there is a way to screw over Indiana while taking the moral high ground, by God, Bob Knight will find it.

Why would he want to go back there? The simple fact that they're all but begging for his return speaks volumes about his departure doesn't it?

I applaude Bobby Knight for telling Indiana and their meddlesome alumni to take thier money and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. Knight doesn't need Indiana or their "Hall of Fame" induction ceremony. The alumni know that they and the university screwed up when they let Knight go. And until the university admits their mistake they will find that Knight wants nothing to do with them.

Agree with Big G. Knight isnt perfect..but nobody asked him to be. Just to coach...and mentor his student-athletes...and he did that better than anyone.

Indiana Univ. is using this as a ploy to try and gain back the attention of Coach Knight's fans, hoping they will return to supporting Indiana basketball. I think Crean is a good fella and he is pushing for this as much as anyone. He did the same at Marquette with McGuire. I don't blame him for trying and I don't hold it against Coach Knight if he refuses to play into this game that Indiana Univ is trying to get back the fans who left along with Coach Knight. Indiana Univ made a dire mistake when firing this legend and they may be paying for their error for decades to come. The entire athletic aroma in the Big ten has fallen since the departure of Robert Montgomery.

"Decades to come" .. is nonsense. The season Crean (when and if) gets thru the final four there will be plenty of fans to fill the house and coffers. That takes nothing away from Bobby. To fantasize about some karmic retribution against the students and alumi for over a generation is childish and does no service to Coach.

So he would rather Indiana lay off some employees or raise tuition so that they can pay him his money directly? Is he thinking this through? Well, it is Bobby, he probably isn't and is just reacting with emotion.
I understand his frustration and bitterness...but it is time to let it go. Forget about the money...I am sure you have plenty...and go back there and enjoy your induction.

Naw number 8. He's ticked that Indiana announced how the whole thing went down. Indiana could've paid for it and accepted the 75,000$ donation to there general fund instead of making it seem like Knight was getting paid off by boosters.

Who hired this jerk? He needs to let Bob knight read this, and be in the same room when he does.. Bob Knight hasn't any desire to screw over this School. He wants his reputation back, that's all. His fight was with Myles Brand who is now dead. (You know the guy who also thought it wrong for NCAA schools to have Deragatory indian names and changed them) He would probably like a public appology, now since IU has seen to make this public. The school has handled this badly, but what haven't they handled badly with Mr. Knight.

@Robert B: it IS wrong for NCAA schools to have derogatory names. that's nothing against myles brand. tradition is never a good reason to justify enshrining a period of american history that's better left unmentioned except as a cautionary tale.
Bob Knight is a damned good coach, and got to where he is with the same stubborn principles he is displaying now. However, as with MJ and his HOF speech, sometimes it is better to leave the past alone.
