Since the Alex Rodriguez story broke, nearly every person who has ever
commented about any sport is being asked to offer his opinion on the
matter. We can now add Bob Knight to that group. (For the record, Dick
Vitale was first to the punch, and he basically made a fool of himself.
Shocking.)
Knight's thoughts are a little different:
There are a couple of things that I've always thought about performance-enhancing drugs. You know, Gatorade is a performance-enhancing drug. Anything with electrolytes is performance-enhancing. Who decides what you can use and what you can't and on what basis is it decided? That's always amazed me. Why can you use this and you can't use that? Every time I turn on television there's an energy drink being advertised. Why isn't that performance-enhancing?
Yes, Bob Knight believes Gatorade is a "performance enhancing drug." MDS at FanHouse "likes Knight's thinking here," citing the fact that Gatorade does call itself a performance enhancer, and wondering the difference between the tasty beverages and Victor Conte's brand of performance enhancers.
More scientific research is needed on the actual effects of steroids on baseball performance, but we basically know what PEDs do to people in general. They make you much bigger, much faster, and much, much stronger. They allow you to recover from injury at an inhuman rate. They destroy fatigue. They're chemically hazardous. HGH has the ability to actually change your bodily structure.
Gatorade is water with sugar in it. There's your difference.
Anyway, let's not get too philosophical. Instead, let's just revel in the idea that, if he ever coaches again, Bob Knight's players will not be allowed to drink Gatorade, lest they be tainted with the stain of the cheater. Have fun, Georgia!

Breathing is 'performance enhancing' because a living player hits the ball further than a deceased one.
The line IS drawn somewhere, and despite your smarmy attempts to subvert efforts at gleaning an opinion, Knight has just copped out in a rather blunt (are we surprised?) way.

Vitamin water is classified as prohibited due to a substance in it that had previously been banned by the NCAA. It is not all vitamin waters. If I recall correctly, only 7 of the flavors contain that substance in a high enough amount for it to be prohibited.
