The Dagger - NCAAB

Since the Alex Rodriguez story broke, nearly every person who has ever commented about any sport is being asked to offer his opinion on the matter. We can now add Bob Knight to that group. (For the record, Dick Vitale was first to the punch, and he basically made a fool of himself. Shocking.)

Knight's thoughts are a little different:

There are a couple of things that I've always thought about performance-enhancing drugs. You know, Gatorade is a performance-enhancing drug. Anything with electrolytes is performance-enhancing. Who decides what you can use and what you can't and on what basis is it decided? That's always amazed me. Why can you use this and you can't use that? Every time I turn on television there's an energy drink being advertised. Why isn't that performance-enhancing?

Yes, Bob Knight believes Gatorade is a "performance enhancing drug." MDS at FanHouse "likes Knight's thinking here," citing the fact that Gatorade does call itself a performance enhancer, and wondering the difference between the tasty beverages and Victor Conte's brand of performance enhancers.

More scientific research is needed on the actual effects of steroids on baseball performance, but we basically know what PEDs do to people in general. They make you much bigger, much faster, and much, much stronger. They allow you to recover from injury at an inhuman rate. They destroy fatigue. They're chemically hazardous. HGH has the ability to actually change your bodily structure.

Gatorade is water with sugar in it. There's your difference.

Anyway, let's not get too philosophical. Instead, let's just revel in the idea that, if he ever coaches again, Bob Knight's players will not be allowed to drink Gatorade, lest they be tainted with the stain of the cheater. Have fun, Georgia!

Knight's thinking is toxic. Slippery slope. Follow that logic, and Water is 'performance enhancing' because it allows you to not pass out on the field while playing.
Breathing is 'performance enhancing' because a living player hits the ball further than a deceased one.
The line IS drawn somewhere, and despite your smarmy attempts to subvert efforts at gleaning an opinion, Knight has just copped out in a rather blunt (are we surprised?) way.

look at vitamin water being classified as prohibited by the ncaa. Clearly Knight isn't too offbased with this.

Does that make choking and assistant or throwing a chair performance enhancers also? I know when I would get choked by my coach or have to dodge a chair I feel like I should perform to a higher level. Who in the world feels Bobby Knight is worthy of interviews or commentary anyway?

    Jason,
Vitamin water is classified as prohibited due to a substance in it that had previously been banned by the NCAA. It is not all vitamin waters. If I recall correctly, only 7 of the flavors contain that substance in a high enough amount for it to be prohibited.

I think Bobby Knight is trying to say something like this: All that crap you can buy at GNC...is it okay for college and pro athletes to use? It's legal, right? Protein powders, creatine, tribulus, etc. are all touted as performance enhancers...none of which were available to people like...Babe Ruth. Does that make it unfair for modern athletes to use them? No one had handy dandy sweat-replacement in a bottle (Gatorade) until 1972. It makes a difference, on some level. How much of a difference can be argued.

If you don't know what steroids do to a baseball player, why would you make fun of Knight for comparing the two? Steroids help you increase muscle mass, they don't make you a better baseball player. Those muscles developed with the help of steroids are NOT any different than they would be from working out a LOT more. Steroids are not performance enhancers, and that is the point Knight was making.

Everything from practice to weight training to running the stadium bleachers is done for performance enhancement. Gatorade, Powerade, Red Bull, 5 Hour Energy are for performance enhancement as well as taking a multi-vitamin. Athletes train to enhance their perfomance to be the best. Our athletes live by the credo " If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying". It's sad but true, face it. Baseball players were allowed to basically take speed, which increases the reaction of your fast twitch muscles, for years. How do you think they were able to get the bat around on a 95mph fastball? Bigger, faster and stronger is what everyone wanted, and they got it. If people think only the 103 players that tested are the only ones juicing in baseball their heads are stuck in their anal cavity. All sports from college to the pros to Olympic athletes do something either legal or illegal to enhance their performance. Go after everybody not just the superstars or the record breakers. What about the marginal players who would never make it out of the bushes who juiced up and got their big break? You know why you don't hear about them? They are not newsworthy stories that's why. Our country is coming apart at the seams and congress wants to waste money on a bunch of cheating athletes and not a bunch of cheating bankers who keep getting richer while the American public keeps getting poorer. If it took me taking steroids to make 25 million a year I'd do it too and so would most of you. I know that sounds completely wrong, but at least it's an honest statement on my part.
