Stop calling the Binghamton basketball team a "zoo." Not because it's
an insult to the players and Binghamton staff. Because it's an insult to the Binghamton zoo.
This is a real thing. In a letter to the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin editor signed by Amanda J. Padwa, business manager of the Binghamton zoo, Padwa refers to Binghamton basketball's latest run of messy player behavior issues -- Binghamton released five players after its star was arraigned on cocaine distribution charges and booted from the team -- and reminds readers that the zoo doesn't do any of those naughty things. Her letter in full:
I am tired of hearing that blight on Binghamton University, the men's basketball team, being referred to as a "zoo." The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has just received re-accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the industry's governing authority. We achieved this status by being in the top 10 percent of all the zoos in the country.
Our animal care, safety, employees and educational and service standards are set high and met accordingly. Not one of our tigers has been arrested with cocaine. No otter knocks over old ladies to shoplift condoms. Our bear doesn't have temper tantrums and storm off his exhibit. You won't find any of our lemurs busted for smoking pot. So, please, stop insulting zoos by comparing those criminals to us.
Padwa's last paragraph is what we in the business (and by business, I mean the business of hip hop; you didn't know I emcee in my free time?) call "ether." Or, to put it in a much, much lamer fashion: Binghamton boys basketball? You got served.
