The Dagger - NCAAB

Apparently the refs in tonight's Binghamton-Duke game aren't mad at Coach K for complaining about Barack Obama's bracket:

All five starters got a foul before the first TV timeout??! That's unbelievable. It's the basketball infraction equivalent of landing a man on the moon. The Bearcats had six team fouls in the game's first 3:30. Earlier today, Connecticut didn't get six teams foul until there were 30 seconds in the first half of its game with Chattanooga.

I'd say the refs were favoring Duke, but I'd rather not have Mike Krzyzewski berate me.

Update: The final free throw totals: 25 attempts for Duke, 5 for Binghamton.

Now, sometimes free throw totals are loaded stats. Teams foul at the end of games, others penetrate more into the middle, drawing more contact, etc. But, 25 to 5 is pretty steep nonetheless.

Not sure which is more surprising...
Duke starts 2nd half on a 15-2 spurt, or Binghamton has only 4 fouls in 4:30...actually a slower pace than the 1st half...

First, that Obama article was BS, Coach K was joking about that quote. Second, Chris I doubt you watched the first three minutes of the game, I know I didn't because CBS didn't show it. All of those fouls could have been perfectly legitimate, you're letting your bias cloud facts.

Duke gets more calls than LeBron and the Cavs do in Cleveland. And they still can't win consistently . They're going to Texas.

Refs have to save duke. Yet none of those teams on tobacco road wants to see the Jayhawks.

are you sure it isnt the refs from the super bowl. yeah, you know, the guys who called 80% of the penalties in the first 45 minutes of the super bowl on the arizona cardinals. no wonder why the cardinals lost the super bowl to the refs, uh, i mean the pittsburgh cheaters. and no i am not a cardinals fan but one of the game which has a black eye now to horrible calls all season long

You see by trying to make others sound like a moron you made yourself sound like a moron.
Unless you live in a part of the country in which CBS changed its broadcasting line-up, basically the whole country saw the whole game from the time that BU won the tip-off until the final buzzer.

let's see, the underdog team is nervous, pressing hard to stay with better team, and they foul, not that unusual. Why say its cheating. It often happens that way in games. seen it often, especially if other team (Duke) knows how to draw fouls, i.e., move the ball around, drive the lane, and get position for rebounds. Maybe that is the way it really is. I have seen it all levels of BB. except for favors granted stars in NBA, it is usually just experience that draws fouls, especially against underdogs.

Let's be real, Chris. I watched this game, and all five of those fouls were legit calls. These Binghamton players were more hyped up than an eight-year-old boy on a pint of espresso. (And can you blame them? This was the biggest game of their lives.) They were gung ho, they got a little too physical, and they got called for it.
Does happen very often? No. But if this had happened against Memphis, would you be railing on the refs favoring John Calipari? I doubt it.

As someone who regularly follows America East basketball, it is no surprise to see Binghamton called for so many fouls. They play a style of ball that lends itself to fouling, and against an opponent like Duke, it's going to be foul calls instead of steals, turnovers, and no calls.
I hate Duke, and this wasn't the officials favoring them. This was Binghamton playing loose and getting called for it by the NCAA's top officials.

i watched the game, the calls were soft and crappy. 6 fouls in 3:30 is absurd. especially against duke, who barely steps inside the arc to draw a foul. duke clearly would have won either way, but that kind of foul discrepency is ridiculous.

I watched each of those five fouls called. The game was on in Washington. None of the fouls were egregiously bad, but none needed to be called either. And I don't believe I ever said anything different. All I said was that the facts were clear that Binghamton had six fouls in three minutes.

Chris, you've officially gone too far. Notice how Chris just blindly claims that the refs were calling things in favor of Duke without providing any evidence. Chris, if you actually watched the game you'd see all 5 fouls were legit. Clark Kellog, who you just praised in a prior column, had no problem with any of the calls and even Coach Broadus (the Binghamton Coach) didn't make a fuss about it.
Here's a challenge: point out how each of those 5 fouls were BS and I'll shut up. That's all I ask.
Anyone reading this: I bet Chase doesn't do it.
This is why people make fun of bloggers. You guys aren't journalists, you're like a kid who writes an book report based on reading the back of the DVD. You just make wild accusations because you blindly hate a team. But you're not even good at hating. You basically spray Duke hate like machine gun fire and most of it is ridiculous or tired retreads like Dukie V or Coach K gets all the calls. Do you just copy and paste from blogs written 5 years ago?
Chris: I've posted before and the one time you responded I debunked your argument in two seconds and then you no longer had the gaul to respond to anyone. Unlike a lot of more reputable bloggers you never answer your critics because your assertions are so absurd that you have no way to defend them.
Yahoo!: Chris Chase is a joke, if you have any sense of integrity, fire the guy.

I am a huge Duke fan and I agree that they get most of the calls. However did anybody watch all the games today? I try to not believe in conspiracy theory stuff but it's almost as if all the officials got together to make sure there were no upsets today. Several high seeds should have lost but got huge benefits from the officials.
