The Dagger - NCAAB

College basketball coaches make lots of money, so, like other people who make lots of money, they buy really nice houses for themselves. That's all good. There might be a Jim Calhoun-related populist argument about whether state-employed coaches should make so much money in the first place, but for the sake of this blog post, let's ignore that, and just discuss what we set out to, which is HOLY CRAP BILLY GILLISPIE'S HOUSE IS SICK.

Gillispie instantly liked the 12,000-square-foot house that features a masculine flair. He loved the volume ceilings, including 10-foot-high ceilings on the lower level. "Eight-foot ceilings really wouldn't work for 7-footers," Smith [Gillispie's realtor] said. Smith, who said the coach had considered building a house from the ground up, told him she didn't know what else he would want in a house. "It has 18-inch crown molding, tray ceilings and six to nine different types of granite countertops," she said.

I don't know what any of those things are. (Moldings? Tray ceilings? Why do you need so many different types of granite? What's wrong with one granite?) I can, however, look at the photos of Gillispie's house and know that it is a southern-suburban McMansion in the most blatant 21st Century American tradition. Wooo! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!

That said, an intimate profile of Gillispie's posh living situation is pretty tone deaf of Billy. Why? First is the economy. When Jim Calhoun is catching national heat for being insensitive about his salary, it's probably not a good time to show off how many horses you have in your backyard. Second is Gillispie's ever-rising seat temperature. Kentucky is currently in danger of not making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991, and if newspaper commenters are representative of the UK fan base at large (and dear God, let's hope newspaper commenters aren't representative of anybody), Big Blue Nation wants Gillispie to put his house on the market:

This is embarrassing!!! BG's multi-million$ house being showcased for the whole country to see - Maybe UK should pay coaches after the season is complete! If so BG would be in the trailer park! Please get us a new coach!

It goes on like that for a while. So Billy, for next time, a little PR advice: When the newspaper people want to come do a big feature on your house, give them the wrong address.

(Thanks to Alex for the tip.)

That is not a mansion. The left front portion of the house is a Garage. This is a nice house not a mansion. The writer of this article probably live in Boston, NY, or in D.C. A three bedroom house cost you $500k. In KY this house is probably a $750k house not counting the land. That is about 1/4 of his salary! Give him time

Nice house. I am sure he earned it because of all the complaining fans and nasty comments and egoes. Let the man enjoy his house and is he to blame if they no not make the playoffs. It sounds like to me the players are not plaing up to thier game. Place the blame where it goes fans and parents. If you think the coach is not doing things right ask the players and also ask them if they are doing what they need to do. Besides I am sure he is also a babysitter.

i'm so sick of people complaining about sports salaries. stop by tickets. stop donating to boosters. the truth is that if they were not worth it they would not be making it. Not one sports program (professional or college) is going to pay out and lose money. I'm not debating whether this particular guy is worth it, but the head coach of UK basketball is going to be a millionaire no matter who he is. He should not be torn apart for living like one.

i agree, it's a nice house, but why bash him for it? i'm sure if they listed every house for every div 1 basketball and football coach in the nation, that this is probably not much different than most. like it was said, any big time program is going to pay a good salary, so i say good for him! i just hope he takes good care of it so when i hit the lottery, i can buy it from him when he gets canned.... LOL.

I hope that McMansion gets termites
Nothing makes me more disgusted than seeing these pompous idiots waste all their money on themselves while their team basically destroys themselves from the inside out. Good goin UK! Maybe next week you can try and reinvent the basketball since you wont have to worry about March Madness!

#12 there is a large community of Professional ball players that live in GA. Think what you will about the state but there are as many evil, rich b@stards here than there are in NY, CA or TX. Billy scored a great contract and lives in a nice place. I hope to live in a place as nice one day. Strive for better or STFU about your own circumstances.

Don't know why Billy bothered with a McMansion when he spends nearly all of his free time getting hammered and obnoxious at bars throughout Lexington.

Yes a very nice house, not a mansion but nice. Why complain about his salary, just stop buying tickets and sending in booster funds. As long as you are paying for tickets hes getting paid the big bucks. Lets see if a team doesnt produce who gets the axe players or coaches? coaches of course so whos to blame a guy for making it while he can. Its not easy coaching a bunch of guys who think they are all the next Lebron or M J, you have to hand hold, nurture etc, not just draw up plays, so give the guy a break he earns it everyday. good job coach! coach m

Apparently its not OK to be successful anymore....not that this is the first example of that. Quit hatin' on people who make money!

Most of you would love to be sucessful at your work and have a nice house. Personally, I don't need a house more than 4,000 sq ft and we live in a 4bdrm house that is 2,500sq ft and it is plenty of room. Salaries wouldn't be high if the institution didn't think it was worth it, but at some point, salaries will come back down.

I don't see what the problem is. It's his money, he can do whatever the heck he wants to do with it. If the supporters of the team don't like the job he's doing, they can petition to have him removed. Otherwise, his finances, properties and assets are NOBODIES business. You don't see all the overpaid CEO's houses, estates, yachts, properties, etc being said to be put on the market. Good grief people, get a grip.
On another note, don't like the interior design of the house. It's cold and impersonal. It needs a little more warmth, needs to look a little more lived in. Just my opinion.
