As Billy Gillispie's days in the UK job waned, he contended that he wasn't hired to be a celebrity -- he was hired to coach basketball games. How's this for celebrity?
Yes, that is Billy G getting chased -- first in a walk, and then in a brisk jog -- by Kentucky TV reporters. It is hilarious.
There are so many good things here, it's hard to decide which is my favorite. Is it Gillispie pretending to be on the phone, even though he never says a word the entire time? Is it the reporter constantly asking questions he knows Gillispie isn't going to answer? Or is Gillispie desperately breaking out into a run, only to have Reporter Man tell him "You're not going to run away from me, are you? I can do this all day!"
Try as I might, I can't decide. It's pretty much just all awesome.
UPDATE: The reporter on camera is Louisville station WHAS 11's Mark Hebert. In case you were wondering why Hebert saw fit to chase Gillispie down the hallowed halls of Kentucky's practice facility, here's his explanation:
2) For those of you who think my decision to chase Billy Gillispie after his firing was poor judgment, you're probably right. My rationale at the time was that Gillispie walked right by the media, claiming to be on his cell phone. I was going to keep following him until he got off the phone. He never uttered a single word on the phone while I was behind him.
Incredible intuition, Mark. Of course Gillispie wasn't actually on the phone. You can see as much on the grainy Internet video above. I'm not sure what the strategy was here, but I wish the secretary at the end of the video would have let them go. How long would Gillispie have lasted? Oh, what could have been.
(Thanks to Alex for the tip.)

till the end. He was treated just like any other nut would be.

Maybe the reporter is auditioning to be Bill O'Reilly's new reporter-stalker...

Gillispie had to use a card to unlock the door, then the "reporter" held the door open and ran in with his cameraman! Now, maybe trespass laws are different in Kentucky than here in PA, but I doubt Gillispie INVITED THEM IN!!!
And if he didn't, they ought to spend a night in the Lexington pokey.
Sheesh! And people in Kentucky wonder why the rest of us think they're psychotic...O'Reilly's stalkerazzis couldn't have done it better!...Billo's got a contract waiting at Faux News for that repor-trespasser...
Hey, maybe Officer Powell ought to stop writing tickets to guys trying to see their dying in-laws and investigate THIS break-in...he certainly has the time to look into it while he's being suspended...

AND this is from someone who is glad to have the guy leave UK. He just wasn't who we wanted to have or need in that position.
Chasing someone down like that is just grandstanding and doesn't accomplish a thing. It's unfair to Gillispie. Give the guy a break. Let him address the situation on his own terms. I just hope when he does; he owns up to his failures as a coach and as a representative of UK basketball. Like it or not wins and losses are not the only neccessities for success at Kentucky.
Thick skin, a sense of humor and common sense.

This way, you can let him know directly that you appreciate how much class and dignity he brings to sports reportage, and the wonderful image he leaves of how people are treated in Lexington, Ky.

Poor basketball teams couldn't happen to a nicer group of people than Kentucky fans. To give a guy with a solid track record only two years is horrible policy.

If the media's going to chase him around and treat him like he's Britney Spears, why would Gillispie *want* to have a good relationship with them?
I'm sure they will be very docile and respectful during the search for a new coach. At least for the first 15 or 20 minutes of it.

I'm not a reporter myself, but I have no tolerance for this type of "attack journalism"...makes REAL reporters look bad.
Not to mention how it makes the atmosphere in Lexington appear to the rest of us.
I DO love about 1:30 into the clip - after Cutler is seen RUNNING BACKWARDS, and has said "Billy, you're not gonna run away from me, are ya?" - when Gillispie says "Need to get in shape, don't ya?". At the end, Cutler is indeed huffing a puffing like a fat guy chasing a donut.

I never even mentioned Tubby because he wasn't who I was talking about. Tubby was a fine coach and a GREAT representative of UK basketball. He has nothing to regret or own up to. If you want to pick and choose things out of context, go right ahead.
If you wish to group all Bluegrass fans as having the same mind about all things you are one who is lacking in common sense. Denigrate UK fans as a whole if you must but only your arrogance will prevail. Not your arguements. It is easy to go online and propogate disrespect. Your opinions are your own. Just like #9's are his own. I gave my response to his with what I thought was a bit of humor. Too bad that you, I suppose, saw that as being thinskinned.

Offer the job to Gino Auriemma! He is "gettable", has shown he can build a program, win, AND recruit, and might be ready to make the jump from the UConn women's program.
