The Dagger - NCAAB

The three most famous dunks in women's basketball history have been more special for their historical significance rather than their quality. Lisa Leslie's inaugural WNBA dunk and both Candace Parker's slam dunk contest winner and that jam from the NCAA Tournament were all fairly awkward-looking. They kind of looked like a dunk from that one kid in your middle school who could jam, but only barely so. Brittney Griner's dunks have no such issues.

The prep star was a YouTube sensation a few years back when video of her dunking in practice made the rounds. Now, the high school senior is jamming before games with even more authority:

Those dunks are the real thing. She's not barely getting rim, she's not throwing the ball through the hoop, she's sending it in, Jerome.

Griner will play next year for Baylor. Skeets speculated last year about her NBA potential, but in the near-term, expect to see big things from her and the Bears over the next four seasons. The last high school girls player that had national name recognition was Candace Parker, and I'd say her career turned out pretty well.

I don't understand all of the gasping of breath at someone who happens to be very tall jumping a few inches and dunking a basketball. Please explain why this is such a big thing. I find it boring and still only worth 2 points.

It doesn't honestly look all that impressive. Pretty routine. But I think that's the point. A player who can dunk routinely is going to have an enormous advantage in the women's game. If she's got decent mobility and agility in the post she'll be utterly unstoppable.

She does look like a dude! she could very well be what wilt the stilt or dr.j were for men's basket ball. but that all depends on her coaching and fundamental skill and indeed if she can obtain the mobility of kobe she it would be unfair for her to play anywhere but the nba. no offense to the ladies of the league.

Impressive for a high school player. It will be interesting to see how she plays middle in the Big 12 with some of the "Courtney Paris" type of players. She may need to gain a few "dozen" pounds of muscle. Looking forward to following her college career.
