Bailed out: Indiana scores Tom Crean

If there's been one word to describe Indiana's situation the past, oh, three months -- and yes, I'm resisting a Len Elmore joke -- it's "mess." In every sense of that word, IU has been there: a coach busted and then fired for cheating, an interim coach that couldn't inspire (or frankly, coach defense), an early, listless tournament exit, and the onionsy dismissal of the team's best two returning players by a known lame duck. It's been a terrible mess.

The Hoosiers needed a new coach, and needed him quickly. When it became clear that any discussion of top-tier program builders (Rick Pitino, Bruce Pearl, John Calipari) and young lifers (Tony Bennett) was going to be limited to April Fool's jokes, the Hoosiers acted quickly and decisively. They got Tom Crean.

Crean might not make Hoosiers feel funny in places they don't talk about at parties like Pitino and Pearl and Bennett, but the hire is a perfect fit in a variety of ways. Before landing at Marquette, Crean was long Tom Izzo's recruiting maven at Michigan State, and he knows the Big Ten -- knows its media, its fans, and the midwestern sway those large schools have over their wide swaths of the plain states. At Marquette, he's long recruited Indiana and Chicago well; he won't need to work to establish talent connections the way Bennett might have. And by recruiting well in those areas, instead of looking east like Pitino surely would have, Crean accomplishes two things at once: he both bolsters his team and drains rivals like Illinois of vital geographic recruiting advantages. Win-win.

At 42, Crean is also a relatively young guy. That's something IU fans demand -- they want another Bob Knight to spring forth from youth and obscurity, and 42 years old is pretty young in coaching circles. Crean's no Bennett boy-wonder, and he's also no Mike Montgomery. He sits right in the middle of the curve: proven but not too old, exciting but not too young.

This is also a good fit for Crean. Instead of playing in the stacked Big East -- arguably the best conference in basketball -- Crean gets to transition to the Big Ten, where a few gangly white guys, some defense, and a decent scheme makes you the next Wisconsin. Crean probably could have coached at Marquette for a couple more years before fans became impatient with "solid," but at IU, Crean will enjoy amnesty, or a honeymoon, or however you want to put it, from a fan base that has had its expectations considerably lowered lately. That will come in handy, since Crean's record in the NCAA Tournament is a mere 5-5 -- and 1-4 without some guy named Dwyane Wade. Whoever that is. (Crean has also been in the NIT three times. Shh. Don't say "NIT" too loudly. You wouldn't like IU fans in the NIT.)

Fortunately for Crean, the IU athletics department is close to finishing brand new practice facilities, the type of place coaches can sell to recruits not sold on the whole "tradition" nonsense. And yes, despite the efforts of Mike Davis and Sampson to sully IU's reputation, the program is still laden with tradition. Those five banners still hang from the wall. It's still a destination -- a place coaches set out for from the moment they begin glad-handing at NABC meetings.

Now Crean has landed there. The next step is to find out if he can coach. If his Marquette returns are any indication, he could be an inscrutably solid, if not dazzling, solution to IU's considerable woes. Indiana got bailed out with this one. Now it's up to Crean to right the ship.

Good hire for IU. Mr. Crean will have a rough go of it due to the situation, though.

Nice call Stephanie M. Spoken like a true IU fan of recent note. Ever hear of something called 'class'? Try finding some of your own.

very good hire. hopefully he can keep the recruits and somehow find a way to get jamarcus back on the team, who would have been the best returning player on the team, assuming gordon goes pro

Good Hire but I don't like this brennen writer. Within Indiana, high school basketball and ncaa basketball remain the most watched sports (cept maybe the colts) The onionsy call by dakich was a no-brainer...I don't care who you are...you don't disrepect your coach or your team. You may not like your coach but that doesn't give you the right to do what they did. They may or may not make any money from the nba but they are (through scholorships) getting paid by the school to represent the school and play for the caoch of the program whoever that might be. The problem with this team has been a huge lack in TEAM. Davis failed because he tried to sell NBA style to fans who are used to Knight. Sampson screwed up...whether his players admit it or not. Do I think it was a lousy rule he broke...yes...but he broke them!
One final note: The big ten isn't as bad as you make it out and the big east isn't as solid top to bottom as you think!

What!?!?!? Utter rubbish. Crean was near Godlike in Milwaukee, and paid like the top ten coach that he wasn't. I am a little dissappointed here, but it all depends on who MU gets on the rebound? Maybe steal Xavier's coach from the A-10 Conf.?
Mc Neal and James shouldnt try to go pro, but if one of them does, I hope its James. This team will still be a top 25 team next yr ad nthat could sell a big name to come to MU.
Hope you like the hots seat, Mr

Nice article, Eamonn. As the former sports editor of the IU student paper, you certainly know the history and the inside challenges of IU sports, and I think you captured the current context of the situation...despite what old school IU fans might want to believe. . I don't think there is much doubt that Crean will be a solid coach..he's proven that at Marquette, which isn't nearly as attractive a school overall as IU and has tougher academic standards than IU. Kids in Indiana will be excited again to play at IU. It will take a few years though, because he is inheriting a mess.. But after Mike Davis and Kelvin the Cheater, I would hope IU fans can be at least a little patient for him to bring in some players.

How exactly is Crean 0-3 in the NCAA tournament "without some guy named Dwayne Wade?" Unless Wade made some inconspicuous appearance in Marquette's first-round victory this year, that stat is impossible. The mistake MIGHT be excusable had the victory occurred more than two weeks ago! Also, the correct spelling is "Dwyane."

has everyone forgot about the violations I-U committed. sure they slapped their own hand by issuing one less scholorship next year but hopefully the NCAA will hand down the same penalties they would for any other college (except the "golden schools" - duke, north carolina, ohio state and indiana).

im so glad Tom Arnold got the job....he was great on Roseanne, but it was about time to stop living in the past...seriously it looks like a good hire. i used to scream at local indy radio when these idiots would talk about getting izzo or pitino...gimme a break thats not what we need. we need the next bob knight ---meaning a guy who has paid his dues and will grow with program for 20 years not give us 5 great years and leave.

Wow..."gangly white guys". I agree with the responder who characterizes this as a racial double standard. If the author had written about a team having a few "gangly black guys" people would jump all over him, and rightfully so.

I wonder what Tony Bennett's thinking right now. A job just opened up right in his old stomping grounds due directly to the one he just turned down going to Tom Crean. Interesting...

"Well, he won't have to coach in the Big East, where a few tall, quick-sprinting, quality-dribbling BLACK GUYS make you the next Georgetown ..."
Now, how does that quote look, Mr. Eamonn? I can hear your groan in response, with the requisite excuse of how harmless your comment is and how out-of-place such "political correctness" is. It isn't about P.C. ... it's about how every time someone makes a similar comment with the roles reversed, they lose their job, while in this case you make an insulting comment about the majority race, it's okay. Double-standard indeed, Kathleen. You might want to learn the lessons of Jimmy the Greek and Don Imus before setting your hands to the keyboard again. Oh, wait, never mind -- you're safe. The insulting comments you made were about whites.
    You could at least apologize.

Tom Crean may not have been at the top of everyone's list, but at this time, he's an excellent hire. He's solid and runs a clean program. He should be able to get better recruits at IU than at Marquette. It may take a few years to get them back to winning (yes, a winning season), but I believe IU will rise to the upper echelon before too long. As for the top builders mentioned in the article Pearl seems to disappear in the NCAA; John Calipari has an awful graduation rate, and I am always waiting for a scandal with him; Pitino has gotten old and is an @$$hole; Bennett has much to prove; and the rest of the top coaches just don't move around very much!

The stacked Big East got one team into the Elite Eight, no teams into the NIT finals, and a lot of favorable attention. Is the Big East good? Yes they are, but let's not crown them king of basketball. Florida the past two years, and who knows this year makes every league dangerous. And if IU would have hired slick Rick, I would have gone naked before I would have worn cream and crimson again. Here's hopng Mr. Creen takes IU back to glory. WELCOME TO INDIANA TOM.

Yeah, I got to chime in on the "gangly white kids" comment as well. As a gangly white kid, I'm offended by those remarks and I'm going to file a defamation lawsuit on behalf of all gangly white kids across America. Maybe I can get Uwe Blab to be my lawyer...
That really was a cringe-inducing comment, but Nathan (@22) is only half-right. Don't include Imus in the same sentence with Jimmy the Greek (and don't forget Al Campanis) - they were totally different situations entirely.
