For the second year in a row, ESPN has decided to broadcast live
Midnight Madness action on affiliate network ESPNU. This is a good
idea, because what else is on at midnight on a Friday night, right?
There might be some good Aqua Teen reruns, but that's about it. ESPNU will be covering the evening by jumping back and forth between nine schools.
Those schools are: Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina, Kentucky,
Duke, Washington, Georgetown, Connecticut and North Dakota State, the
only mid-major and the only team not ranked somewhere near a preseason
top 25.
So, provided you're not in some gym somewhere tonight, those are the
Midnight Madness events you can watch. Excited? Sure you are. But not
as excited as I am about the names of each event, which provide new
entertainment year after year. A list:
Connecticut: "First Night" (Sounds like a new NBC drama.)
Duke: "Countdown to Craziness" (Weak.)
Kansas: "Late Night in the Phog" (Very ominous.)
Michigan State: "Midnight Madness" (Bor-ing.)
North Carolina: "Late Night With Roy Williams"
(I have no doubt that a "Late Night" hosted by Roy Williams would be
five times as entertaining as anything Jay Leno's done all year.)
Kentucky: "Big Blue Madness" (Possibly the name of a children's book about jello.)
Washington: "Midnight Madness" (Boooo!)
Georgetown: "Midnight Madness" (OK, all right, fine, I give up.)
North Dakota State: "The Late Show With Bison Basketball"
Of all of them, I think North Dakota State might have the best name.
Lots of repetition in this group, but North Dakota State might end up
being the most entertaining of all the broadcasts. Those people love their Bison. Dig it.
