Yahoo! Contributor NetworkFive best Omaha restaurants for College World Series fans
In less than two weeks, the College World Series begins. If you're making plans, you might want to know which restaurants are not only convenient to the stadium, but also offer great food for baseball fans.
Here are my five favorite restaurants in the vicinity of TD Ameritrade Park:
M's Pub
M's Pub is my first choice for great food and ambiance for baseball fans. Its about two miles from the stadium, but well worth the short drive, or longer walk if you want to stretch your legs. It is located at 422 South 11th Street. One of the best things about M's, is that they serve food until midnight Monday through Saturday, and 11 p.m. on Sundays.
At M's, you'll feel comfortable in jeans and a baseball jersey, or dressed to the nines. There is a wide variety of food to choose from, including typical pub sandwiches like the delicious Rueben and amazing steak sandwich, burgers, and my favorite- Italian and seafood. There are even vegetarian and gluten-free items on M's menu. Dinner specials change every couple of weeks, so you might want to check their current menu. This isn't cheap fare, but the prices are reasonable with entrees ranging from $16 to $36 currently.
Big Horn Mountain BBQ
Big Horn is just up the street from the stadium at 2524 S. 13th Street, and is internationally known for its mouth-watering brisket and amazing BBQ dishes. Here you'll find homemade sauces, incredible hot wings, delicious spare ribs and much more. The prices are reasonable with dinners from $7.59 for the Gizzards Dinner to $19.99 for the Spicy Back Rib Slab. All dinners include your choice of bread and two side dishes. Come to Big Horn hungry, and you'll definitely leave there satisfied.
Baseball fans can't beat the location, price and awesome food at Big Horn Mountain BBQ. The only drawback, is that it might be better for lunch, or a before-game meal, as they are only open until 8:00 p.m. Beer and wine are served, no hard alcohol.
Upstream Brewing Company
If you like a good beer, you'll love Upstream Brewing. My favorite is the Scotch Ale. Its amazing. Although its a dark beer, it goes down easy with a slightly sweet and full malty flavor. If you want to try an Omaha steak, this is the place. They serve very generous-sized Omaha steaks with the Grilled Rib-eye or New York Strip Steak, both excellent values at $23.50.
Upstream is open until 2 a.m. and they serve food until midnight on Friday and Saturday. The Hot Artichoke & Asiago Cheese Dip makes a perfect late-night snack. Its served with toasted garlic beer bread, and could really be a meal just by itself.
Baseball and beer go together like cookies and ice cream. Upstream Brewing has received three medals at the 2008 International World Beer Cup and is about 2 miles from the stadium at 514 S. 11th Street, Omaha.
Bohemian Cafe
Bohemian Cafe may be one of Omaha's best restaurants. They offer authentic Czech/Eastern European food, and have been a staple in downtown Omaha for nearly 90 years. They are located just a little more than a mile from the stadium at 1406 S. 13th Street. If you're visiting Omaha for the College World Series, be aware that people come from all corners of the world to the Bohemian Cafe. You really should experience this place at least once while you're in Omaha. They are open until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
The breaded chicken cutlet is moist and delicious and is one of my favorite entrees. It's on the menu for only $12.75. You should really try the dumplings and gravy as well, with the Ala Carte version at only $3. They also offer jaeger schnitzel, svickova and Czech goulash. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
Piccolo Pete's
Piccolo Pete's is an Italian Steakhouse, where you can come dressed in your baseball attire, or Sunday best. At just a mile from the stadium, its conveniently located for fans, at 2202 S. 20th Street. They serve dinner until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 p.m. on week nights.
Piccolo's specializes in steak, seafood and Italian food, but you can also find some great burgers and incredible beef stroganoff. Their meatballs have actually won awards, with the recipe handed down through many generations. They are moist and flavorful with just a touch of sweetness. If you're craving an after-game dessert, try the root-beer float. Apparently this is Warren Buffet's favorite restaurant, and he calls their root-beer float the best in the world.
You'll be sure to have a great time at the College World Series in Omaha, and you can't go wrong with any of these outstanding Omaha restaurants.
