OMAHA, Neb. – Wake Forest has its new head coach and has agreed to terms with New Orleans coach Tom Walter.

We reported earlier this week that Wake Forest’s three finalists were Walter in addition to Creighton’s Ed Servais and Florida State assistant Mike Martin Jr. Walter, though, is the choice for the Demon Deacons.

“I am just thrilled with the opportunity to be part of the Wake Forest family and I believe athletic director Ron Wellman has a great vision for the program,” Walter said in a text message. “I’m looking forward to making Wake Forest a championship caliber program.”

Walter replaces former coach Rick Rembielak, who was relieved of his duties at the end of this season, where the Demon Deacons finished 22-30 and 6-24 in the ACC.

Walter’s hire definitely will receive rave reviews throughout the college baseball community after guiding New Orleans to new heights.

After Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city of New Orleans and the UNO campus in 2005, Walter convinced his coaching staff and most players to stay with the program. UNO finished the ’06 campaign with a 30-28 record, but caught everyone’s attention by making back-to-back regional appearances in ’07 and ’08.

Last summer, we named Walter as one of the nation’s five rising coaches.

Prior to UNO, Walter spent eight seasons as coach at George Washington.

Walter will to fly to Winston-Salem, N.C., on Tuesday for a press conference.
