Washington has its new coach.
According to sources close to the situation, Indiana State coach Lindsay Meggs has accepted a job offer from Washington and is the newest coach of the Huskies.
The source also indicated that the Huskies also had their eyes on Hawaii's Mike Trapasso and Oregon State assistant Pat Bailey as finalists. Strangely, San Francisco coach Nino Giarratano wasn't mentioned by my source as one of the top three finalists for the job.
Meggs' hire culminates what has been a wild past month for the Huskies. First, it seemed to be Pepperdine's Steve Rodriguez. Then Virginia Tech's Pete Hughes and San Diego's Rich Hill proceeded to turn down the job.
Meggs may not be the sexy hire that everyone in Seattle was hoping for. Personally, I thought Giarratano was an excellent fit for the Huskies. However, there's no question that Meggs has a history of success.
Before arriving at Indiana State, Meggs guided Chico State to a pair of Division II national titles in 13 seasons. He also compiled an outstanding 538-228-4 record with the program. Before Chico State, Meggs coached at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College.
Meggs spent the past three seasons at Indiana State, where he engineered an impressive turnaround this past season. The Sycamores finished the 2009 season second in the Missouri Valley. They also had an overall record of 33-21.

1) Meggs is a PERFECT fit for this spot - he is a proven winner and a Pac-10 guy. He and Rich Hill go back a long ways and they are cut from the same mold - if you thought Rich was the guy - just watch what Meggsy can do.
2) To take a program like ISU and turn it around like he did is stellar - to be able to recruit to Terre Haute in a "mid-Major" conference is a testament to the work the Meggs can do.
3) Watch out Cougs - Meggs was 2nd in line for the WSU job that went to Marbut - only took Donnie 7 or so years and a smoked resume to get them to the regionals - Meggs is legit and will make the Cougs rue the day the passed him over. I am as anti Fusky as they come however this moves my allegiance to UW (at least for baseball, of course)
Good Luck Meggs, see you soon in Seattle!!!!
