There was a time when people would've laughed at the notion of Rice and Texas being heated rivals on the baseball diamond. But in the past decade, the Owls and Longhorns have been more than just heated rivals. There's zero love lost between the two programs, though, they respect one another.
The most intense baseball rivalry in the Lone Star State could take on a more important meaning as early as 2011.
According to a pair of sources close to the situation between the two schools, the Owls and Longhorns are tentatively scheduled to play a three-game series in the near future. '11 is the target year for the first of many weekend series between the programs.
The Owls and Longhorns play each season, but the games have taken place in the mid-week or in a single game at the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
This series would be huge for both Rice and UT fans.
The one thing, though, that could derail this plan is if the proposal to overrule the addition of another week to the baseball season somehow passes. If so, the series could go right back on the chopping block.
The overrule is not expected to occur.
