Playing for the Compton Magic Elite at this past weekend's 2013 Pangos Spring Sweet Sixteen at Cabrillo (Long Beach, Calif.) High, the four-star Class of 2014 recruit tossed a teammate into the front row in order to secure a fast break. And secure it, he did.

Bailey cuffed the ball on his right wrist and threw down a ferocious one-handed dunk over a hustling defender who probably would have been wise to avoid posterization.

Regardless of how he completed the dunk, the event is a big deal, and so is Bailey. LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Paul Pierce, John Wall and the biggest name in NBA circles this week, Jason Collins, are just a handful of players who have participated in the event.

As for Bailey, the 6-foot-5, 170-pound junior small forward captured Second Team All-Area honors from Long Beach's Press-Telegram this past winter after leading Compton (Calif.) High to a berth in the CIF Division III state tournament. Ranked No. 89 in his class nationally on the Rivals 150, he already owns a handful of Division I offers.

Compton High was also home to Toronto Raptors wing DeMar DeRozan, who won the 2008 McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk Competition as a prep and has twice competed in the NBA's Sprite Slam Dunk Competition. Not sure he ever used the old throw-your-teammate-into-the-front-row cuff dunk in either competition.

Just for fun, here are a few other notable Compton High alumni: Morgan Freeman's son Alfonso, Hanna-Barbera co-founder William Hanna, former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, Baseball Hall of Famer Duke Snider, NWA founder Eazy E and rapper The Game.

It’s a common over-exaggeration to say that a player knocked off an opponent singlehandedly. Except it wasn’t much of an exaggeration for a regional playoff baseball victory in Texas, where a starting pitcher threw a no-hitter and scored the only run of the game with a solo homer.

Now that is a one-man show.

As reported by the Waxahachie Daily Light, and brought to Prep Rally’s attention by USA Today, Waxahachie (Texas) High ace David Martinelli turned in one of the dominant baseball performances of the season at any level in a Class 4A regional playoff game against McKinney (Texas) North High. Pitching against the top overall seed in the state playoffs, the senior threw a no-hitter, dominating an offense with an abudance of power. Then he provided power of his own, socking a solo home run in the third inning which he then made stand up for a memorable victory.

“The pitch sunk a little more than I thought it would so I got my hands extended and I got it with the sweet spot of the bat and I knew it was gone off the crack of the bat,” Martinelli told the Daily Light of his home run. “I still wanted a couple more runs because I was getting nervous, but it was a great team win.”

Of course, Martinelli himself made sure that he didn’t need any more runs. Instead, all he needed was himself, as he used what was described as a “filthy breaking pitch” and an overpowering fastball to consistently set down a lineup which entered with a collective .354 batting average.

“I kept track of [the no-hitter] the whole game, but I really started thinking about it in the fourth and I just tried to stay in the zone,” Martinelli said. “But I couldn't ask for anything more from my teammates. They played great behind me. We definitely couldn't have done it with out all our fans out here supporting us either.”

Now the fans get a chance to keep supporting the Indians, thanks to Martinelli and Martinelli alone.

If you haven’t heard of Marcus Lee yet, don’t worry, you will.

Lee is a dominant and versatile post player who hails from California, where he has spent his high school career starring for Antioch (Calif.) Deer Valley High. At 6-foot-10, Lee has the size and athleticism to be a legitimate NBA prospect within a year or two if he lives up to the expectations that come along with picking a John Calipari program.

Yet Lee isn’t focusing on basketball at the moment. That’s because he’s just as committed to his second sport: volleyball.

As noted by MaxPreps, Lee isn’t just one of the best basketball players in the country, he’s also one of the best volleyball players. He was forced to miss the first third of the volleyball season due to his involvement in national basketball all-star games (he played in both the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic), but Lee has still emerged as one half of a twin-towers wrecking crew for Deer Valley. Lee has racked up 154 kills across a shortened season, averaging 3.8 kills per game, with Deer Valley racking up a 40-1 record.

Lee’s partner up front, 6-foot-4 Jordan Ewert, has averaged 4.7 kills per game for the Wolverines.

As the season rolls along, Lee keeps improving on the volleyball court as well. In the California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section Championship, Lee racked up 15 kills to lead Deer Valley to a 25-15, 24-26, 25-16, 25-15 victory against Amador Valley (Calif.) High, earning the first sectional boys volleyball title in school history. You can see Lee in action against Amador Valley earlier this season in the video directly above.

While this playoff run will serve as the final bow for Lee in boys volleyball, he still has a shot at earning more school and state history. With Lee and Ewert up front, Deer Valley will be among the favorites in the Northern Section playoffs, where Lee will hope to add to his 143-17 career record with the Wolverines.

Then again, maybe this won’t be Lee’s last go-around. If basketball doesn’t work out, Lee could very well have a future in volleyball at the collegiate level, or higher. If anyone thinks the U.S. national team wouldn’t be interested in a 6-foot-10 freak of an athlete with past hardcourt volleyball experience, they’re kidding themselves.

In American baseball, managers talk about pitch counts as if they’re a death sentence. Once a player has reached a certain number of pitches, he’s out. End of story. That’s particularly true in high school and youth baseball, where athlete’s bodies are still developing and the long term health of their arm may be more fragile.

There are no such concerns in Asia, which helps explain why one superstar teen pitching in South Korea is making national headlines at home while setting off blaring alarm bells in the U.S.

As reported by the Yong Hap news agency, Daegu (S.K.) Daegu Sangwon High School pitcher Lee Su-Min set a new national prep record with 26 strikeouts in the course of a 10-inning game. Lee through all 10 innings of the matchup against area rival Daegu (S.K.) High School, allowing just three hits and three walks in a 2-1 victory.

In the process, the 17-year-old starting pitcher threw an astounding 162 pitches. Perhaps ironically, given Lee’s remarkable control, his team won on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the 10^th.

While Lee’s 162 pitches would make anyone concerned, they’re only a small part of his worrisome overall workload. Again according to Yong Hap, the teen is averaging 139 pitches per game in 2013.

For his part, Lee claims that he has felt no arm problems despite the high pitch counts, perhaps because he gets five off days -- one more than a standard MLB workload -- between starts. Still, 139 pitches is an awful lot to put out even over the course of a week.

His manager seems to realize that such a lofty pitch count may not be able to last, either. Daegu Sangwon manager Park Young-jin told Yong Hap that he is already considering using Lee as a closer rather than a starter during the second half of the season just to keep him healthy.

Not that Lee will be happy with such a shift, of course.

"When I start, I never even think about who will pitch in relief after me," Lee told Yong Hap. "When I am pitching, my manager doesn't even have other pitchers warming up in the bullpen. He knows my personality.

"As long as my arm feels good, I'd like to keep starting. I haven't put too much thought into my number of pitches. I get plenty of rest in between, and so it's fine."

As reported by the New York Times and a wide variety of other outlets, 18-year-old Kaitlyn Hunt has been charged with lewd and lascivious battery after she admitted to having a sexual encounter with a former girlfriend at Sebastian (Fla.) Sebastian River High, where both Hunt and her alleged victim are students. Hunt admitted that the pair had a later sexual encounter at the school and at least one sexual encounter in her bedroom when her then-lover had reportedly fled her own home.

While both teenagers were students at the same school, their relationship was brought under legal review because of age differences. While Hunt is an 18-year-old senior, her partner was a 14-year-old freshman. Florida state laws prohibit an 18-year-old from engaging in a sexual act with anyone 16 or younger, and because her age qualifies her as an adult, Hunt is now facing hard felony charges.

The pair reportedly met while playing for the Sebastian River basketball team, and their relationship began shortly thereafter. The two proceeded as many teens would in a relationship and did not encounter trouble -- legal or otherwise -- until the younger teenager’s parents were told about the relationship by one of the basketball team's coaches, and then decided to alert authorities about the age discrepancy.

For his part, Hunt’s father insists in an online petition that his daughter is being persecuted purely because of she is involved in a homosexual relationship. The ACLU has also chimed in to offer their two cents that Hunt is being brought on charges because of her sexual orientation.

“Kaitlyn’s girlfriend’s parents are pressing charges because they are against the same-sex relationship, even though their daughter has stated that this is a consensual relationship,” Steven Hunt wrote. “Now she’s been expelled from school and is facing serious felonies — all because she is in love.”

The charge against Hunt was a stunning one both because of its sudden appearance before authorities after a months-long relationship and Hunt’s position within the school's social hierarchy. Hunt has been expelled since the charges against her surfaced, just weeks before she was scheduled to graduate. The senior is a well-known varsity cheerleader and basketball player who also sang in the school choir. The New York Times reported that she had even served as a mentor to younger cheerleaders at the school and was a youth gymnastics teacher.

In short, she is an All-American girl who happens to be homosexual, and whose dreams are now seriously imperiled because of a single relationship with a younger student. While there is a plea bargain for Hunt to accept on the table, her parents have told her that doing so would mean relying on a judge’s willingness to withhold adjudication to keep her from becoming a registered sex offender for life. With more than 41,000 members of a Facebook group set up to support Hunt's cause, her parents would seem to have plenty who agree with them.

“It’s like a death sentence to all her future goals,” Hunt’s mother, Kelley Hunt Smith, told the Times. “I have four other daughters. She could not be involved in their activities. There’s just so many things -- you can’t go and pursue pediatric nursing. There’s just a lot of things she will not be able to do.”

Scoring amid a seven-run barrage in the top of the seventh inning, Nicholson leaped Davis catcher Hayden Duer in what The Bee aptly dubbed "a SportsCenter-like highlight," sealing a 12-3 upset of the top-seeded Blue Devils in the Division I sectional playoffs.

Franklin should never have even been in that position. Despite entering the sectional tourney with a 14-13 record, they've since won 3-of-4 postseason games -- including upset wins over Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and Davis -- to improve to 17-14.

And Nicholson almost wasn't even on Franklin. This past summer, he transferred from crosstown rival Elk Grove -- the team that sent the Wildcats to the losers bracket despite a Nicholson RBI in a 9-6 second-round defeat on Saturday. California Interscholastic Federation rules prevented Nicholson from joining Franklin's baseball team until April 1.

Nicholson's arrival has clearly provided Franklin with a much-needed boost. The Wildcats were 5-6 in March, and they're 12-8 since he joined the team on April 5, including a 7-1 stretch over their last eight games -- capped of course by Nicholson's ridiculous leaping score during a 2-for-4, two-run afternoon for the junior utility player.

Nicholson is now batting .309 with 15 RBI and 15 runs scored in 19 games this season, collecting five runs and three RBI in his team's sectional playoff run. He hit just .184 in 52 at-bats as a sophomore for Elk Grove last season. Maybe he needed the change, too.

If Franklin can pull off yet another upset of yet another crosstown rival against Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) High on Thursday, Nicholson will get another shot at his former team in the sectional semifinals on Saturday. Maybe he'll even jump them as well.

As reported by the Los Angeles Times and a variety of other Souther California outlets, the Anaheim (Calif.) Esperanza High volleyball team was scheduled to face off against Goleta (Calif.) Dos Pueblos High on May 11. Unfortunately, that was the day of the Dos Pueblos prom.

The Dos Pueblos squad had a right to ask for a change in the time of the game, but not the date. Still, when Dos Pueblos asked to move the game to a new day, Esperanza agreed quickly out of principle.

"It was a classy move by Esperanza to help us out, and we really appreciate it," Dos Pueblos Athletic Director Dan Feldhaus told the Times’ Eric Sondheimer.

In the end, things still worked out of Esperanza, with the Aztecs knocking off Dos Pueblos 22-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-21. The victory pushed Esperanza into the CIF Division 2 semifinals, albeit a couple days later.

In what could be credited as a string of good karma, Esperanza went on to capture the Division 2 crown, with a spot in the Southern Sectional playoffs following as a result.

Naturally, all of this may have happened with a prom night forfeit against Dos Pueblos, too, but it wouldn’t have been as classy. As Esperanza showed, that really does mean something.

So, what do the 49ers need? Apparently a legendary high school coach, if recent reports from Comcast Sports Bay Area are to be believed.

According to CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maioco, a 49ers insider, Harbaugh has reached out to recently retired Concord (Calif.) De La Salle High head football coach Bob Ladoucer, sounding out the decades-long coach of the Spartans about a consulting job with the 49ers in which he would help Harbaugh navigate “team dynamics”.

That’s a major step up for Ladoucer, who led the De La Salle Spartans to 399 victories and a whopping eight mythical national titles. Ladoucer’s prep legend is so compelling that a major motion picture (starring Jim Caviziel) chronicling his life and tenure at De La Salle is currently under production.

For the moment, the former De La Salle head coach is still on the coaching staff for the Spartans, serving as a volunteer running backs coach. At the same time, he is playing an active mentoring role to new Spartans head coach Justin Alumbaugh, who told MaxPreps that his predecessor is apparently happy in his new more limited role, in part because it puts a limit on the stress he feels on a daily basis.

"I think he's happy in his new role. He seems a more spry,” Alumbaugh told MaxPreps. “This is a well-earned change in roles. I think he's enjoying and embracing it and seems a lot less wound up."

Whether that calming phase would continue if he takes on the 49ers as well remains to be seen. Given Ladoucer’s penchant for tackling challenges head on, he might be precisely the kind of coach to take on the role that Harbaugh thinks he could fill, as well.

Then three California prep swimmers eclipsed that mark in a single race.

Campolindo (Moraga, Calif.) High senior Steven Stumph touched the wall in 53.39 seconds to capture the North Coast Section title at the Concord (Calif.) Community Pool (h/t MaxPreps), edging out Miramonte (Orinda, Calif.) High senior Charlie Wiser (53.57) and Granada (Livermore, Calif.) High junior Nick Silverthorn (53.61).

"I haven't seen anything like it," Campolindo coach Ron Heidary told the Contra Costa Times. "I think the consensus from everybody I talked to was that was the most extraordinary heat of swimming that anybody has ever seen."

CollegeSwimming.com's No. 12 senior recruit, the USC-bound Stumph also won the 100-yard butterfly in a North Central Section record time of 47.88 seconds in addition to swimming the second leg of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay squads that finished in meet record times of 1:30.52 and 3:01.70, respectively.

Naturally, Stumph's Campolindo team cruised to the North Coast Section championship.

Meanwhile, the NCS title-winning Carondelet (Concord, Calif.) High girls squad also set a national prep record at the meet. Chelsea Chenault, Natalie Amberg, Madelyn Murphy and Madison White won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:20.42, eclipsing the previous mark of 3:21.63 set by Germantown (Washington, Pa.) Academy in February.

Ranked the No. 8 senior recruit by CollegeSwimming.com, the USC-bound Chenault also won individual NCS titles in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle in 1:44.45 and 4:39.11.

A YouTube video posted over the weekend seems to catch the tail end of a pickup game between Garfield and a pair of little kids in New York City's Chinatown (h/t Big Lead).

The 29-year-old actor has his pocket picked by one kid and can only watch as the child's buddy drains what appears to be a game-winning bucket in his eye. Not even the costume could save Garfield, who was in Manhattan shooting "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

Garfield previously showed off his awkward form and poor shooting percentage at a charity event last summer. With great power comes great responsibility, and apparently Garfield's responsibility is to repeatedly get beat at basketball by New York City youth.

Garfield has good reason for his basketball inadequacy. He was raised in England by a swimming coach of a father who also subjected him to gymnastics at City of London's Freemen's School. It takes a rare talent like Manute Bol or Tim Duncan to turn swimming success into court clout. And Garfield is no Big Fundamental.

"I was a gymnast and swimmer until 13," Garfield once told Britain's The List. "Then I gave sports up and started naval gazing. I needed something to keep me afloat, so my parents suggested acting classes. I took them and a very encouraging teacher suggested I could make a career out of it. As soon as that happened, I felt some kind of purpose."

That explains everything. Sadly, Emma Stone had to be subjected to this losing game of 1-on-2. She can be seen walking her golden retriever in shame behind the defeated web-slinger on the YouTube video. He's lucky if their relationship lasts the week.

But seriously, good for Garfield. Those kids won't forget the day they beat Spider-Man.

Yet a Little League in Massachusetts has taken a hard line against one 12-year-old, and not because of anything he’s lacking. Rather, he’s just too good on the mound … or at least with "too much power.”

As reported by MassLive.com, the web home of the Springfield Republican, 12-year-old Westfield, Mass. native Tanner Beebe is a member of a team in the Westfield “Minor League” division, in which all his friends and other 12-year-olds play. Like any number of players in the division, Beebe is an aspiring pitcher, and appeared dominant early in the season. That’s when a league official clocked him tossing 60 mile-per-hour strikes from the traditional Little League mound -- roughly equivalent to an 80 mile-per-hour MLB changeup -- the league stepped in and banned him from pitching.

The reason for the ban is that technically Beebe is too old to pitch in the Minors division. Yet the Westfield League has traditionally let 12-year-olds continue to pitch regardless of age or size.

Beebe isn’t a threat for his size -- he stands approximately 5-foot-1 and 90 pounds -- but he is for his talent. Yet, rather than see him promoted to the higher “Majors” division, Beebe and his father, with support of league officials, agreed that he should continue playing in the Minors. There’s a good reason for that, too; before this year Beebe had focused on lacrosse, so he is only making his baseball debut at age 12.

Beyond that, Beebe’s father, Chris Beebe, serves as his coach in the Minors, meaning that the 12-year-old would have to leave his father’s team to continue pitching legally. Chris Beebe vociferously defends the family’s decision to place their novice son in the Minors, pointing out that developmentally he was “a full five years behind the 12-year-olds in the majors.”

That the youngster emerged as a pitching phenom was a surprise to everyone, yet now it has landed the league in hot water. When Westfield Little League officials appealed to the Eastern regional chapter of Little League in Bristol, Conn, the Connecticut association refused to grant any leniency and allow him to continue pitching.

The report to the Little League Eastern office followed a slee of complaints about Beebe's dominance on the mound, with parents reportedly taunting the 12-year-old during games.

Instead, I supporting the Beebes attempt to regain his pitching eligibility, Little League threatened to take back the league’s Little League charter if Beebe continued to pitch.

The entire snafu has left Beebe playing in the field and outfield, all while his arm sits idly by, for at least another year. While disappointed, the youngster appears to be keeping the right attitude about the entire unfortunate situation.

“I’m getting in trouble and being punished because I’m too good,” Tanner Beebe told the Republican.

“My goal was to get better at pitching this year. Now, my goal is become the best shortstop and catcher I can. That’s all I can do.”

Still, Beazell found an intriguing way to steal headlines during the Saints’ Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament, landing himself on both sides of the scoring ledger.

The play that put Beazell in the rarified air of goalies who score is the one you see above, where he launched a pitch-perfect 80-yard heave that caught his counterpart for Woodberry (Va.) Forest School out of position and earned St. S/St. A a big goal in what was at the time a tight state semifinal.

Of course, that perfunctory description doesn’t do Beazell’s strike justice. The goalie flung the shot sidearmed, giving it a good hard hurl and then watching it fly all 80-yards through the air, striking the Woodberry Forest goal without so much as a bounce en route.

Now that is scoring your first goal with a flourish.

Luckily, as reported by the Washington Post, Beazell was just as impressive inside his own cage, racking up 12 saves to accompany his goal in leading the Saints to an 8-5 victory. He was almost as good in the state final, with seven saves in a 6-5 victory over Arlington (Va.) Paul VI High School that kept the VISAA state title in the Saints' trophy cabinet in Alexandria for a second straight year.

There’s no word on whether Loyola might consider giving Beazell a lacrosse stick with a smaller head and seeing if he can make that magic touch work a little more often. Unless they plan on using him in the cage during his first full season on campus, they might as well give it a whirl; after all, he’s clearly got a knack for the dramatic.

As reported by the San Jose Mercury News, Strem tossed a perfect game in a 2-0 victory against Monta Vista (Calif.) High, leading Mountain View (Calif.) St. Francis School on to the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Central Coast Section Division I playoffs.

Incredibly, Strem retired the 21 batters he faced on just 66 pitches, an average of just more than 3 pitchers per batter. According to the Mercury News, 48 of Strem’s offerings were strikes, with the St. Francis ace finishing the game with a total of 8 strikeouts.

As it turns out, it’s an awfully good thing that Strem was so effective. If he wasn’t, his team wouldn’t be playing anymore. The game remained a 0-0 stalemate until the sixth inning, when a single by St. Francis batter Mark Cardinalli drove in the game’s two runs with a single through the infield.

Naturally, Strem isn’t the first high school ace to toss a perfect game. Still, to spin the gem he did in the playoffs, with the efficiency of his pitch count is some achievement.

Of course, given the competition ahead of St. Francis, he may have to spin some more magic if they are to keep advancing. Given what he pulled off against Monta Vista, one would be wise not to doubt Strem’s effectiveness.

Sure, Prep Rally knows that White is a talented skateboarder as much as he’s a snowboarding phenom. Still, he’s never pulled off what the 16-year-old Brusco accomplished while skating in the X Games in Barcelona; he landed a 1080 during the MegaRamp event (i.e., skateboarding's Big Air), becoming the first skateboarder to ever land the trick in an X Games competition.

That means that neither White, Bob Burnside, Bucky Lasek, Paul Rodriguez Jr. or anyone else has successfully achieved what a 16-year-old from Kirkland, Washington has already done.

To see Brusco fly above the ramp is to watch greatness emerging far faster than anticipated. Action sports have always been a realm where great young talent can rise through the ranks at a pace that stuns. With no minor league circuit or anything similar, when a skater is ready, he or she just gets the push up to the X Games.

That’s precisely what’s happened with Brusco, who has responded with an abundance of confidence. The high schooler earned his two medals at the Barcelona X Games, including a silver for his run that included a 1080.

Given his age and his rapid improvement, it seems likely that those medals are just the first of many to come.

Hear that Flying Tomato? You may have company on the summer circuit and the action sports marketing front. Brusco looks like he’s here to stay.

Elisha Shaw, one of the top defensive line prospects in the nation, is expected to be a big-time college player come fall 2014. The rising senior at Atlanta (Ga.) Tucker High is considered one of the top 50 overall prospects in the Class of 2014 and is being recruited heavily by the likes of Alabama, Texas, Florida State and a handful of other top programs.

Still, Shaw has not been given a 5-star rating, and he considered that quite a slight. In fact, as reported by the blog Outkick the Coverage, Shaw was so upset that he hadn’t given given a fifth star (he’s currently considered a 4-star recruit by Rivals.com) that he tweeted out a screenshot of his computer looking at the top player rankings for 247Sports.com, with the appended caption “Man, I need that fifth star.”

There was just one issue that Shaw hadn’t consider. Shaw was looking at the 247Sports rankings on one tab, but had two other browser tabs open on his iPad. One of those other tabs displayed a “Cannot Open Page” error message; the other showed a ‘Pornhub.com’ search for a well-known porn star.

Now we can officially add screengrabbing proof of one’s own porn watching activity as a recruiting social media snafu.

The specific star of pornographic movies in question is a 23-year-old young lady named Isis Taylor, who is a well-documented (or at least photographed) USC fan. In fact, as soon as Taylor heard that Shaw was searching for some of her past work, she took the opportunity to reach out to him on Twitter herself, encouraging him to head to USC.

That may very well mark another first in student social media snafus: A porn star soliciting a football recruit to try and influence his collegiate pick.

So far, Shaw has been quiet about the entire incident. No schools have backed off the 6-foot-5, 295-pounder yet, though that may not last the longer that he lets the Isis Taylor story linger.

Then again, maybe he’ll just pick USC. The Trojans weren’t on his radar before, but maybe now that he’s got wind of one very notable star, they might want to reconsider their odds.

Wade never officially responded, and the media, general public and Muxo herself assumed that the plea had fallen on deaf ears. As it turns out, it hadn’t, and Muxo and her surprising date stole the show at the Archbishop Carroll senior prom.

Apparently, Wade had dragged out his response because he wanted to see how the Heat’s playoffs were progressing before committing to spend an evening not competing in the middle of a game. After Miami knocked off Chicago with the Knicks and Pacers still locked in a tense series, Wade decided he could spare part of an evening to surprise a well-deserving teen.

As reported by the Miami Herald and CBS Miami, Wade made his appearance with plenty of fitting flair, as well. The former NBA Finals MVP called Muxo to send her happy wishes for her prom -- which she had agreed to attend with fellow Archbishop Carroll student Laurent Chaumin in Wade’s stead -- but then walked through the door 10 minutes later to surprise her.

Fittingly, Muxo was starstruck, as was the rest of the Archbishop Carroll contingent.

In fact, Chaumin appeared just as thrilled as Muxo, telling the Herald “At least we both know how to dress,” and posing for plenty of pictures with his date and Wade.

That left the superstar happily tweeting that he was a “third wheel” and “both of their dates,” though he was apparently glad just to make a difference for a group of Miami teens, particularly the one who mustered up the courage to ask him to show up. He made that much clear on his Twitter feed shortly after leaving the event.

“I had a blast at Prom. Never be scared 2 ask.”

In one touching case, a Native American tribe is actually pitching in to help out. As reported by USA Today, Representative Ray Halbritter from the Oneida Indian Nation plans to give a $10,000 check to the Cooperstown (N.Y.) School Board to defray the cost of new uniforms necessitated by the longtime Redskins’ change in mascot to the Hawkeyes.

Intriguingly, Habritter intimated that the Oneida Nation might be willing to offer similar assistance to other high schools that voted to abandon the Redskins moniker, all while offering a nasty tone against Snyder, noting that the Redskins are a billion-dollar franchise, “and they don’t need our money.”

"High school students are showing more wisdom than these wealthy major league owners,” Halbritter told USA Today. "They're showing much more thoughtful and respectful initiatives than many of these wealthy major-league team owners. … These wonderful kids have done such an inclusive, respectful and thoughtful thing."

As it turns out, Oneida assistant might not be needed in Michigan. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights filed a federal complaint with the Department of Education earlier in 2013 asking for an order that would ban the use of all American Indian mascots in the state.

The widespread use of Native American mascots and nicknames means that no fewer than 35 schools across the Great Lakes state would be affected by the prospective order.

According to the Detroit Free Press, because of the prohibitive expenses incurred by switching those mascots and nicknames, a pair of Michigan legislators have moved to force the Michigan Department of Civil Rights to defray those costs.

Regardless of whether either of those acts come to pass, its become clear that the growing movement to rid “Redskins” from the American prep sports lexicon is at foot and growing. Rapidly. If Halbritter and his colleagues have anything to say about it, the nickname will disappear into the ether, whether with his funding or without.

The 13-time Pro Bowler's daughter Diamond attends St. Paul's, so Lewis sent a cell phone video to the girls lacrosse team before its private school state title showdown with three-time defending U.S. Lacrosse national champion Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh School, owners of a 90-game winning streak entering the contest (h/t MaxPreps).

St. Paul Gators -- where you are now, you are supposed to be. Now it's up to you to complete the race. But you want to complete the race by looking each other in the eyes and ask yourself one question. What will I give up for the person that's beside me? What will I sacrifice?

What will I sacrifice? Not for a win or a loss, just for the opportunity to play and say we did it. Whatever your fate is, it's already done. That's why we're in the championship.

Go claim the glory -- the glory within your heart, the glory within your spirt. You'll do anything, anything to be with a teammate during this time. This is your time.

The motivational words nearly worked. The Gators led 8-4 with 15 minutes left, but McDonogh scored the final seven goals to secure another IAAM A Conference title and finish unbeaten this season, prolonging a 91-game winning streak that dates back to April 2009 and will remain the nation's longest for at least another year.

Oddly, former Ravens kicker Matt Stover's daughter Jenna helped lead the McDonogh comeback, according to PressBoxOnline.com. Stover and Lewis won a Super Bowl together in 2000. Lewis' daughter Diamond does not play lacrosse for St. Paul's.

"Speaking of the Ravens," St. Paul's coach Brooke Kuhl-McClelland told the Maryland-area online publication, "Scott said before the game this is like John and Jim Harbaugh in the Super Bowl. We're like a big family."

In a way, he's right. In 2000, McDonogh coach Chris Robinson hired Kuhl-McClelland as an assistant while serving as head coach at Ellicott City (Md.) Mount Hebron High. Robinson's MHHS tenure culminated in a five-game winning streak before he handed the reigns over to Kuhl-McCllelland, who proceeded to win 98 consecutive games and establish the reported national record of 103 straight.

Next spring, Robinson's McDonogh squad will shoot for that mark -- shared with Hampton (Md.) Loch Raven High's teams from 1973-82 -- without 17 seniors from this year's team, according to MaxPreps. The Eagles will still have weapons, like University of Maryland-bound junior Megan Whittle, who scored three goals in the comeback title win.

"We have a lot of depth and play a lot of kids," Robinson told MaxPreps. "Eventually we just wore them down. Our kids thrived under pressure. It was pretty impressive."

It had to be in order to thwart a team inspired by the mythical words of Ray Lewis.

That being said, what Hannibal (N.Y.) High pitcher Jake Shortslef achieved on May 14 was still absolutely remarkable. Across a complete game, 3-1 victory against regional rival Jordan-Elbridge, Shortslef struck out 20 batters.

As one might expect, Shortslef’s 20-strikeout gem set a new Hannibal record for strikeouts in a game, tying a New York Section III record with two other pitchers. Those performances -- by West Genessee (N.Y.) High’s Kevin Krause in 1991 and Mexico (N.Y.) High ace Jeff Hains in 2006 -- are among the only other recorded performances where a pitcher has struck out nearly the entire slate against him. In his performance, Shortslef walked precisely zero batters. In a remarkable twist, Shortslef isn't even the most successful strikeout pitcher in his own family; his sister, Marlena Shortslef, once struck out 22 batters in a victory for the Hannibal softball team.

Yet Shortslef’s mastery of the Jordan-Elbridge lineup goes beyond the simple stats. As noted by the Syracuse Post-Standard, the game in question was played in downright winter conditions, with sleet and snowflakes coming down on the teams throughout the game.

That Shortslef could maintain his control so masterfully under those conditions is almost absurd. Then, consider that Shortslef wasn’t even feeling on top of his game, either.

“To be honest with you, I wasn’t feeling 100 percent,” Shortslef told the Post-Standard. “I wasn’t expecting a good outing. I got the first nine outs and said, let’s see if I can go with this.”

If there was any question about just how incredible Shortslef’s outing was, one need only consult the opposing coach.

“Our league is filled with solid pitching,” said Jordan-Elbridge coach Eric Short, “but Jake Shortslef’s performance was as dominant as we have seen. He had total command of both his fastball and breaking ball and could throw either for strikes late in the count which really had us off stride.”

Taryn Griffey is more than just Ken Griffey Jr.’s daughter; she’s also one of the best prep girls basketball prospects in the nation. In fact, Taryn Griffey is such a promising prep hoopster, she was recruited by many of the nation’s best programs even after missing her entire junior season following an ACL injury in October.

Most expected Griffey to accept a scholarship from one of those highly touted programs. Instead, she’s heading to a school where the team often fails to reach a .500 record, let alone the Final Four.

On Wednesday evening, Griffey committed to play her collegiate basketball at the University of Arizona, which finished the 2012-13 season with a record of 12-18, including a dire run of 13 losses in the team’s final 14 games.

That doesn’t sound like a program well suited for a top-50 recruit, but there are other compelling reasons for Griffey to wind up in the desert. Primary among them is her brother, Trey Griffey, who is a wide receiver on the Arizona football team.

“My family was pretty shocked. I hadn’t said anything because I didn’t really know what I was thinking,” Taryn Griffey told Central Florida News 13. “My brother is here and my dad and him were high fiving.

“My brother being out there had some influence on it, but I really like the coach and I really like the atmosphere out there.”

Given the fact that Griffey Jr. and his father famously had a family thing going in Seattle, the Arizona connection between Griffey Jr's two children is a touching one that both brother and father clearly relish.

While Trey Griffey and the Wildcats coaching staff may have had some impact on the younger Griffey’s decision, Taryn insisted that there was a larger motivation behind leaving Florida’s humidity for the dry heat of Arizona: The chance to forge a legacy. Griffey cited the recent examples of Baylor superstar Brittany Griner and Notre Dame guard Skylar Diggins as ideal models of what she hopes to achieve in Tuscon.

She certainly has the talent to do just that. Before sitting out her junior campaign, Griffey was named the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Class 8A player of the year, leading her Orlando (Fl.) Dr. Phillips High squad to a second straight state title.

Naturally, some of Griffey’s comfort with the Tuscon campus comes from the fact that she’s spent significant time there. Nonetheless, Griffey insists that she is ready for her senior season and the college future that will come thereafter.

Her father and brother are now apparently more excited than ever for that future, too.

Cleburne (Texas) High girls soccer coach William Christopher Francis, 27, became the 33rd teacher arrested for sexual contact with a student this year, WFAA-TV reported.

"I hope it's not true, but I also know there are two sides to every story," a parent of a Cleburne High student told the news broadcast. "I also know it's happening a lot."

In fact, improper relationships between teachers and juvenile students happen in Texas more than any other state. Terry Abbott, chief of staff in the U.S. Department of Education under the Bush administration, cited 13 female and 19 male teachers -- as well as one undisclosed case -- facing felony charges for sexual conduct with students.

The majority of the teachers involved were between the ages of 30-40, and a third of them used either social media or texts with the student victims, WFAA-TV reported.

Francis resigned from his posts as an audio visual and animation teacher as well as head girls soccer coach. This was his first school year at Cleburne in both roles. A day later, Francis was arrested and now faces up to 20 years in prison and $10,000 in fines. He remained behind bars on $40,000 bond at the time of the WFAA-TV report.

The Cleburne varsity girls soccer team finished 13-7-6 and made an appearance in the Class 4A sectional playoffs under Francis' direction this past season. His Lady Jackets roster featured three seniors, three juniors, six sophomores and a freshman.

Francis previously served as head coach at Irving's MacArthur and Nimitz high schools. He also coached in Lewisville and Plano, the Cleburne Times Review said.

As first dug up by MaxPreps, Honolulu (Hi.) Punahou star Quinn Cassidy was in the midst of an attempt at the Island Movers State Track and Field Championships when he ran the lane, planted his pole, got two-thirds up and … fell directly back down to earth.

As one can see, Cassidy’s pole inexplicably snapped just as he was nearing the bar. Naturally, that’s just about the single worst moment for a pole vaulter’s primary accessory to fail. That send Cassidy into a full flip, with the vaulter eventually landing on his back on the safety mat.

Amazingly, Cassidy came back to finish second in the pole vault with a top height of 14-foot-0. That was actually just as high as the eventual champion, Honolulu (Hi.) Roosevelt High’s Devin Furuta-Harada, but Furuta-Harada emerged victorious on a tiebreaker.

Given what he had just gone through, second place was a heck of an accomplishment in itself, particularly because of its contribution to Punahou’s larger goal; the school won the combined boys and girls title, with the Punahou boys finishing just 0.25 points shy of Honolulu (Hi.) Baldwin High for the boys title.

The Punahou girls won their fifth straight state title.

Of course, none of those accomplishments were as daring as Cassidy’s vault just after his pole broke underneath him.

As reported by the Newark Star-Ledger, Peppers blazed to a state record victory in the 200-meter sprint at the Big North United Division Championships, crossing the finish line at 20.79 seconds. That time was good enough to surpass the previous record of 20.93 dating back to 2001 by a good deal (in sprinting terms), which set the track and field and recruiting worlds alight.

After all, Peppers is a top football recruit for Paramus (N.J.) Catholic High first and a sprinter second, so any achievements he reaches on the track are often filtered through the lens of what they mean to his football career. In this case, they meant that he could be seen as an athletic speed merchant like NFL brethren in the backfield DeAngelo Hall and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, among others. That’s clearly what programs like LSU, Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State are thinking as they beat down his door trying to recruit him to their campuses.

In fact, because of Peppers’ famed speed, there was no particular reason to doubt the authenticity of his time, which led to media reports far and wide about his latest achievement. Yet, as it turns out, there was reason to doubt his 20.79 speed, because he didn’t run a 20.79 at all; he ran a 21.37.

How could such a mistake happen? According to Lou Fraulo, who runs Fraulo Race Timing, the service which provided all official timing for the Big North United Championships, a shadow was cast in front of Peppers’ body on the image taken to certify the finish times, and that shadow made Peppers appear to be farther forward than he actually was.

That illusion led those reviewing the photo to credit Peppers with his original record time of 20.79, even if that mark was an illusory one.

“It took quite a while looking at it to figure out what was wrong,” Lou Fraulo told the Star-Ledger. “Would have been a great time, but unfortunately it was not meant to be.”

And all because of a shadow. If anything, the brief setback may provide even more motivation for Peppers, who is fast on his way -- literally and figuratively -- toward major collegiate sporting success, both on the field and the track.

As you can see in the video above, with the game on the line -- Horace Mann was nursing a 3-2 lead with two outs in the bottom of the 7^th inning with runners in scoring position -- Mass was charged with chasing down a deep, deep fly ball.

In fact, the ball was hit so deep that it would have been a home run in almost any other park. However, at Poly Prep Country Day, the ball was still in play because the diamond’s outer fence in right field traipses behind the batting cages, giving Mass and other right fielders a few more feet to chase down deep balls if they can navigate the plentiful obstructions.

Mass did just that, though he almost took himself out on a batting cage and sent himself tumbling forward in the process.

The catch was a particularly important one for Mass and Horace Mann because of the rivalry it won. HM had fallen in 12 consecutive matchups with Poly Prep, and would have fallen for season number 13 if Mass hadn’t pulled in his miracle grab.

Luckily for Mass and his teammates, he did just that, sealing the most memorable win of the season -- if not Mass’ career -- in the process.

“It’s indescrible,” Mass said of both the victory and his catch in particular. “It was just instinct. I just backtracked, kind of tripped and got my glove up. That’s all it was. I’m speechless right now.”

As reported by the Arizona Republic, Surprise (Az.) Valley Vista High quarterback Andrew Arellanes, who was slated to start in fall 2013, was pronounced dead early Sunday morning after falling out of a pickup truck while playing a version of motorized cops and robbers colloquially known as “Fugutive.”

According to the Republic, Arellanes was standing in the bed of a pickup truck with the vehicle traveling somewhere between 25 and 35 miles per hour when he fell out as the truck of “police” looked for groups of “fujitives” hiding from the teens in the truck.

“If we can learn from this, it’s that playing games with people standing or being in the back of a truck is very dangerous,” Surprise police Sgt. Mike Donovan told the Republic. “Being in the back of a [moving truck] is not safe.”

While there was little solace for Arellanes stunning and sudden death, the Valley Vista community was quick to reflect on the life of a teen universally recognized as a “good kid.”

“All I heard was positive things about him,” Dalvin Richardson, the school’s starting quarterback in 2012, told the Republic.

Added Arellanes girlfriend, Valerie Valle:

"He would always stick up for anyone, whether they were his friend or not, and he loved his team.

"He's always in our heart. I would just tell him that I love him, and that of course his family loves him. He loved everyone."

Yet, none of that gamesmanship has stopped the high school junior from leading the Knights (16-11) to the first round of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. During the tournament's wild-card round on Tuesday, Wilson struck out eight over five scoreless innings in a 6-1 victory against John W. North (Riverside, Calif.) High.

"They'll quote the movie sometimes," Wilson told the L.A. Times' great Varsity Insider blog. "They try to make jokes about it and stuff, but I try not to focus on that too much."

Only, the younger Wilson is certainly no "Loser with a capital L" as Biff would say. After starting out the season as a reliever and only recently joining coach Tom Dill's starting rotation, the 6-foot-1 junior right-hander is 2-1 in nine appearances with a 1.68 ERA and 44 strikeouts against only eight walks in 33.1 innings this season.

Notre Dame is no stranger to having famous fathers in the stands. Chief among them was Antonio Fargas, better known as Huggy Bear on "Starsky and Hutch," whose son Justin played running back for the Knights and later for the Oakland Raiders.

"Fortunately, he got his mother’s athletic prowess and his father’s good looks," a somewhat disguised Thomas F. Wilson joked to Times writer Eric Sondheimer.

The elder Wilson has kept himself busy lately performing as a comedian, voicing animated characters and making cameos on shows like "Franklin & Bash" as well as films like the upcoming "Heat," starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

It wasn't always easy stepping out from his father's shadow -- “I’ve gotten used it to over the years,” Tommy Wilson told the paper -- but the kid's making a name for himself. And at least his pitching career won't go careening into a pile of manure.

That’s where Sheperdsville (Ky.) Bullitt Central High star Hailey Szpila drilled five home runs on consecutive at-bats during a three-game stretch for her team. As reported by the Louisville Courier-Journal, Szpila wrapped up her performance in Bullitt Central’s victory against Elizabethtown (Ky.) High with a solo shot, then exploded for three homers during a record-setting afternoon against Taylorsville (Ky.) High, where the junior accounted for nine RBI (two of her homers were grand slams) and tied the state record for home runs in a game.

Bullitt Central won that rout 15-1, but Szpila’s crowning moment came the very next night, when the junior started off Bullitt Central’s victory against South Oldham (Ky.) High with yet another home run.

Three games, five at-bats, five homers. All in a week’s work for the star, who starts as both a pitcher and first baseman.

Considering the fact that Szpila broke the state’s consecutive homer mark by two, one would think that the crowd would expect it to come to an end rather than continue. Yet, when Szpila walked up to the plate for her second at-bat against South Oldham, the crowd was still disappointed when she flied out to left field, even if she had put almost enough juice behind her bat to land another homer if her swing had made contact a bit more cleanly.

"You don't expect anybody to set a record like that," Szpila’s coach, Buddy Gallemore, told MaxPreps. "To hit five in five consecutive at-bats is incredible. Her teammates were as excited as she was and so was the coaching staff, believe me. She's worked hard on her swing the last few years. She is just seeing the ball. It looks like a beachball.

“Her mechanics are very sound and the ball travels. She knows she can hit and her confidence is through the roof."

Incredibly, MaxPreps reported that Szpila had hit just three homers during her junior season entering her 5-homer binge, making her sudden power surge all the more remarkable. In fact, she hit just one homer as a sophomore, meaning that she topped her total from the previous two seasons in the span of back-to-back-to-back games.

Given that her average improved to .476 after her homer run, we might all expect to see more of her moonshots heading over the fence before the season wraps up.

In what can only be described as a major surprise, not to mention a particularly unique twist, Harris had his scholarship to Michigan State rescinded after he posted the explicit rap video you see above to YouTube. In the course of a 3:26 span, Harris rhymes about having sex, smoking illegal drugs and being awesome at life in general.

Naturally, all of these are particularly normal, even banal tropes for most rappers, yet they aren’t particularly attractive to the NCAA. In fact, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Michigan State decided to pull its scholarship from Harris after it saw his music video for “DatBull 4 Life” (Harris raps under the stage name “Jay DatBull”), which kicks off with a massive puff on a substance which looks an awful lot like a substance which is firmly on the government’s list of illegal narcotics.

While losing a Division I football scholarship would seem like a particularly traumatic experience for an athletic 18-year-old, Harris took the entire incident in stride. In fact, it appeared he had made a clear choice to chase rap stardom over a future on the field, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer that his move from the gridiron to full-time rap had been held up in the past by his lack of courage, not any indecision.

“I’ve always had this in the back of my head, but never had the courage to tell my parents that this is what I want to do,” Harris told the Inquirer.

For the record, Michigan State said that Harris not honoring his scholarship was a mutual decision, which is significant for one reason: It means Harris is almost certainly the first teenager to back away from an almost sure four-year free ride to rap since Will Smith passed on MIT.

Only time will tell if Jay DatBull actually becomes successful in the studio, but he has lined up a June 1 record release date, with critically acclaimed producer M. Stacks agreeing to produce his debut album. The YouTube video for DatBull 4 Life has also already been viewed more than 50,000 times on the video sharing site

Some of those views were probably generated by Harris’ football fame, though he may have earned some organically as well. Either way, he’ll now have to prove that he is worthy of attention on his own without the football accomplishments and pedigree behind him.

Now that dream appears to be close to fruition, you’ll just have to travel to Dubai to take it in.

As reported by MaxPreps, three of the most prestigious high school basketball programs in the U.S. -- Huntington (W.Va.) Prep, Lone Peak (Utah) High and Montverde (Fla.) Academy -- have all been approached about taking part in an international showcase tournament to be held in the Dubai in June of 2014. While no terms of the invitations have been released, the event is being organized by a group called MPAC Sports, which also plans to invite other high school teams that are the best in their respective nations in the Middle East and Africa.

Given that MPAC is a Chicago-based outfit that has strong connections and access to senior figures in Dubai, it likely has access to the kinds of funds that would be required to transport a host of international squads to the United Arab Emirates in the summer heat, even if sources told MaxPreps that financing for travel associated with the event had yet to be finalized.

That could mean quarterfinal matchups between the likes of Montverde and a team from Israel or Senegal, followed by a championship game between Montverde and Huntington Prep.

While the event might seem like a tremendous cultural opportunity for some of America’s most prestigious college hoops prospects, that hardly means it’s already on all systems go. Rather, its likely that the different state governing bodies that oversee sports in the state of each team invited to the event would have to clear the students involved to travel to Dubai and compete in a tournament outside the officially sanctioned calendar.

For the moment, that means that the MPAC Elite International Tournament might be just a dream, albeit one that may very well come true sooner rather than later.

The 49-year-old umpire -- the only known public photo before his booking mug shot is below, from his high school yearbook -- allegedly passed out drunk on the infield and assaulted the responding medical personnel during the first inning of a game between Toloun (Ill.) Stark County High and visiting Monmouth (Ill.) United High.

"I'm sorry for the inconvenience I gave everyone on Friday," Jacobson said at a hearing that set his bail for $5,000, according to the Star Courier, his hometown newspaper in Kewanee, Ill. "That definitely was not normal of me."

Let's hope not. Jacobson now faces two felony charges of aggravated battery and a pair of misdemeanor counts of resisting a peace officer, according to WQAD 8 (h/t Deadspin).

As pointed out by the Illinois High School Association's Matt Troha, who reached out to Prep Rally via email, Jacobson was not an accredited IHSA umpire but a last-minute local fill in when one of the scheduled umpires could not make the game.

Jacobson refused treatment from emergency medical technicians and attempted to wrestle away from handcuffs until Stark County Sherrif's Department deputies used a Taser twice to bring him in, the reports said.

Stark County Superintendent Jerry Klooster confirmed to WQAD 8 that the arrest occurred on the field during the game, telling the news station, "at no time was the safety of the players or coaches in jeopardy."

Jacobson, who remained in jail at the time of the report, is ordered not to consume alcohol or visit any establishment that serves alcohol before his May 24 arraignment.

Jacobson also faced felony and misdemeanor drug charges in 1982 and 1983, Stark County State’s Attorney Jim Owens told the Star Courier.

On Saturday, Miles’ son Manny Miles tossed a no-hitter to lead Baton Rouge (La.) LSU University Lab School to a 12-1 victory against Monroe (La.) Calvary Baptist in the Louisiana Class 2A state semifinals. According to the Baton Rouge Advocate, the coach’s son was dominant, finishing the game via Mercy Rule in five innings and facing the minimum three batters in four of those five frames.

While there was no official count of Miles’ strikeouts, the pitcher did struggle with control issues in one inning, walking three batters. The lone Calvary Baptist run scored due to both an error and fielder's choice.

“It’s not that I had a no-hitter,” Miles told the Advocate. “My defense got a no-hitter. They made great plays the whole game. I hung a curveball to [Calvary catcher] Weston Steelhammer, and he hit it a long way and our center fielder Gino [Marucci] runs it down. Then our left fielder made a diving catch, got a bloody nose and keeps going.”

The younger Miles is a sophomore who has previously generated more buzz as a quarterback and wide receiver for the University Lab School Cubs. Given that his father is one of the highest profile college football coaches in the nation, it’s no surprise that football would register first on the radar.

Still, that may be changing soon thanks to young Manny’s impressive performances on the mound. In just his second year of high school baseball, Miles finished 11-0 and threw two no-hitters.

Unfortunately for the Miles clan and all Cubs fans, Miles couldn’t start in the state title game, which followed a day after his semifinal gem. Perhaps because of his absence, University Lab fell to Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian Academy 2-0 in the championship game.

Of course, that didn’t entirely dim the mood for the Miles family, which was happy being together and celebrating a monumental day for the teenager. The no-hitter was just the second game of the season that Les Miles had been able to attend because of Spring football obligations, but he was glad to make the most of it.

“I love having my family behind me,” Miles told the Advocate. “They’re my biggest supporters. They’ve been there for me when I’ve had bad years and when I’ve had good years. They’re always there.”

Gipson’s tragic death was essentially a fait accompli when his family decided to remove him from life support on Monday following three days spent in critical condition in intensive care.

A junior, Gipson was lined up as a running back on the play that left him injured. While carrying the ball, he was hit in a traditional shoulder-on-shoulder tackle. Instead of bouncing back up, Gipson couldn’t raise himself from the ground. An athletic trainer was on site and attended to Gipson immediately while the team awaited paramedics, who transported the back to a local hospital and then to LSU via helicopter.

While it initially appeared that Gipson might be able to regain motor functions --Farmerville Principal David Gray told KNOE in the immediate aftermath of the injury that the school was holding out hope he would make a complete recovery -- the teen’s condition deteriorated significantly in the days that followed, to the point that his family apparently began to realize on Sunday that he would not recover mental capabilities.

That’s when the Gipson family apparently decided to keep their son on life support long enough to prepare his body for organ donation. Once that process was complete on Monday, the Gipson family said its goodbyes and removed him from life support.

"[The Gipson family] made a very unselfish decision,” Gray told KNOE. “Many lives are going to be touched by this, many lives are going to be able to continue because of the donation the family decided that Jaleel could do.

"It's heart-wrenching, it's a very hard process to watch and being a father myself, couldn't imagine going through it."

A memorial fund has been set up to help defray the family’s expenses at Marion State Bank, a native Louisiana bank. While that may not bring Gipson back, it and the organ donation set up by the family may help some remember their friend who left them far too soon.

"I'm very fortunate in having known Jaleel," says Gray, "and being able to remember that smile, the smile that Jaleel had."

Only, when a student discovered the thumb drive, what he found can only be described as offensive. The drive included hundreds of "provocative" photographs of female students and at least two child pornography images, according to The Tampa Tribune.

"I have a 12-year-old sister," the student told the paper, "and I'm really PO'd."

Polk County deputies arrested Arnett on Wednesday on two felony child porn charges as well as "using the Internet to obtain pornography," The Tribune reported. The 41-year-old in-school suspension teacher previously coached Clay County (Manchester, Ky.) High, where he was a two-time All-State lineman, according to WYMT TV in Kentucky.

While Arnett -- a self-described porn addict since age 9 -- admitted to acquiring many of the images on student Facebook pages while denying any knowledge of the few photos considered pornography, local deputies painted a much different scenario.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told The Tribune the thumb drive contained a pair of images portraying girls aged 10-16 performing sex acts in addition to hundreds more photos taken in classrooms and on the track of female Gibson High students "focused on the girls' breasts, buttocks or genital areas."

Police seized Arnett's computers at both work and home, where he leaves a wife and four children aged 5-16, the report said. Authorities urge potential victims to come forward.

“We need to hear from the students,” Judd told The Tribune. “We need to hear from those who may have been a victim.”

As reported by the excellent swimming website SwimSwam, Lindsey Engel broke an existing 28-year California record in the 50-meter freestyle, racing to a 22.56-second time in the preliminary round of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Division 3 championship meet. Engel also broke the CIF Southern Section Division 3 record in the 100-meter freestyle with a 49.06-second time.

The teen turned in both performances in preliminary action at the CIF Southern Sectional meet, which was held at Riverside Aquatics Complex in Riverside, Calif. She’ll get more chances to top her mark later this year at the state meet and state open meet.

While Engle’s time alone would be worthy of national attention, the name that she knocked off the top of the California record books only enhances that reputation: Legendary Olympian Dara Torres was the existing 50-meter record holder with a time of 22.69 seconds, set in 1985.

As one might expect, Engel’s performance was far superior to everyone else in the field. In fact, it was nearly 2 seconds faster, an absolutely astonishing threshold of victory for a race that was just 50 meters long.

Engel is a junior at Crean (Calif.) Lutheran High, so she still has another year of high school in front of her before she heads off for collegiate swimming somewhere. At the same time, she’ll likely be preparing to compete for a spot on the national team, a goal which is still some years away at the very least.

Naturally, it’s far too early to predict an appearance in Rio for Engel, let alone a medal. The 50-meters is traditionally one of the more competitive events to earn a place in, so Engel will have plenty of work cut out for her. Nonetheless, if she continues to turn in times like the ones she produced at the CIF Southern Sectionals, she’ll be firmly in the conversation, and potentially in the Olympic pool as well.

That’s because according to MyCentralJersey.com, Woodbridge (N.J.) Colonia High baseball coach Tom Hennessy insists that despite saving his team, he is in no way a hero. Rather, Hennessy insists he only did what anyone else would do.

“I don't think it's a big deal,” Hennessy told MyCentralJersey.com. “I don't call myself a hero, I call myself a teacher.”

Prep Rally will let you decide if Hennessy is a hero or not, but we’re inclined to give his heroism a nod, because of what he did, according to MyCentralJersey.com.

The Colonia baseball team was headed back to their Woodbridge home campus following a victory at North Brunswick (N.J.) High when the bus driver lost consciousness altogether. The bus began swerving while traveling approximately 30 miles-per-hour down the road. Hennessy, who was sitting in the front row, tapped the driver on the shoulder but noticed that he didn’t respond.

Immediately the coach sprung into action, leaping up from his seat and pushing down on the driver’s foot that was over the brake pedal until the bus stopped. He then immediately threw the bus into park, took the driver’s pulse and had his assistant coach dial 9-1-1.

Throughout the entire time while the team waiting for police and paramedics to show up, Hennessy continued to speak to the bus driver, even though he wasn’t responding. Eventually the driver awakened, with no recollection of leaving the field in the first place.

When an ambulance arrived the driver was checked and eventually deemed healthy. Meanwhile, the team got back home safe, and Hennessy immediately reported the incident to school officials, team parents and the bus company, following procedure right to the last letter.

As the incident has gained more attention, plenty have applauded Hennessy’s quick thinking. The Woodbridge Superintendent was one of them, calling his school’s baseball coach a hero. That isn’t affecting Hennessy, who continues to insist that he only did what anyone would have under the circumstances.

“Kids are the reason you teach and coach,” the coach told MyCentralJersey.com. … “I just reacted.”

Now, Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen -- the man leading a coaching staff which legendarily told one player “You’re a baller!” and sent "a can of Swag” letter to another earlier in 2013 -- may have elevated the entire letter-barraging game to a new level, sending a Mother’s Day card to the Mom of one prized recruit.

The news of Mullen’s Mother’s Day letter to the mother of recruit Chase Johnson, a massive offensive lineman, was first reported by the Clarion Ledger. Before you ask, no, Dan Mullen didn’t know Chase Johnson’s mother outside of the fact that she is his mother. In fact, its pretty clear he is only interested in Ms. Johnson in her capacity as Chase’s mother, unless she makes a mean apple crisp that no one else knows about.

Still, Mullen’s card to the mother Johnson clearly got his intended message across. Mullen claims that he and his staff intend to make Chase Johnson part of the Mullen family writ large, and Johnson seems to be taking the bait.

“I’ve always liked Mississippi State,” Johnson told the Clarion Ledger. “But I think it affected me. They believe family is number one. They are going to accept you and your family. They aren’t just recruiting you, they are recruiting your whole family.”

Clearly, this is a game changer. Coaches have attempted to woo parents of recruits for years, yet few if any have ever been bold enough to openly court them with the brazen transparency of a Mother’s Day card.

Whether other schools follow Mullen’s lead remains to be seen. Unfortunately, if recent recruiting efforts are any indication, it’ll only be a matter of time before every school is sending out Mother’s Day cards (and Father’s Day cards, for that matter) to every prospective recruit in the nation.

There’s only one clear winner here: The postal service. After all, we all know how hard up they are for cash these days.

Finally, Benintendi can rest assured that everything did break right. The Cincinnati (Ohio) Madeira High senior has now officially accumulated more career hits than anyone else in state history.

As reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer and a variety of other Ohio sources, Benintendi set the new all-time Ohio hits mark during Madeira’s 17-5 victory against Deer Park (Ohio) High. Benintendi finished the game 3-for-3, pushing his career total to 203 hits, three more than prior record holder and Lancaster (Ohio) High legend Dan Ruff.

Benintendi’s record is a testimony to consistency above all else. The Arkansas signee is a career .500 hitter and has started every game he has been eligible for across a four-year prep career. That consistency and Benintendi’s speed and tenacity make him a likely MLB Draft pick as well, though it remains unknown precisely where he might be selected.

For now Benintendi and his teammates are just focused on appreciating what he has managed to accomplish during his prep career, which is now certain to go down in state and regional lore.

“I have a feeling Andrew is glad it’s over, but we have enjoyed the chase over the last couple of weeks,” Madeira coach Jack Kuzniczci told the Enquirer. “I’ve never seen him play as well as he has over the last two games to close it out, he has five home runs and a double over his last seven at-bats.”

Following the lead of both LSU and Alabama, Brown became the first Longhorns coach to recruit a middle school kid when he offered Dylan Moses a football scholarship on Wednesday, according to the Dallas Morning News (h/t Big Lead).

The Louisiana State University Lab (Baton Rouge, La.) School eighth-grader is a 6-foot-1, 215-pound running back and defensive back whose maturity goes well beyond his 14 years. He swats away his gridiron peers like King Kong treats planes.

The Texas bid, which Moses announced on Twitter this week, joins Ole Miss, Florida UCLA, Florida State and Nebraska in addition to offers from Nick Saban and Les Miles.

When Moses attended LSU football camps this past summer, coaches clocked his 40-yard dash time at 4.46 seconds and measured his vertical leap at 34 inches, according to the Baton Rouge Advocate. And he held his own opposite "some of the best wide receivers in the area," his father Edward Moses Jr. told the paper.

Saban expressed to Dylan that “he didn’t usually offer scholarships to young athletes but that he feels he has the potential to be the No. 1 athlete in the nation,” the father added.

Moses could not play for the University Lab School's varsity football team this past fall after transferring from Baton Rouge's Broadmoore Middle School midway through seventh grade, although he is reportedly running for the varsity track squad this spring.

When he finally makes his debut for U-High football coach Chad Mahaffey next season, he'll have the pleasure of running behind four-star offensive guard Garrett Brumfield, who Rivals.com ranks as the No. 3 player at his position in the Class of 2013.

Remarkably, here we are, extolling the virtues of Lake Academy baseball player Nico Ortiz who put forth a performance that he is unlikely to top no matter how much longer he continues to play on the diamond.

As reported by the North Coast (Ohio) Chronicle Telegram, Ortiz used his first ever varsity baseball start as a pitcher to twirl a perfect game. More impressive still was just how long it had been since Ortiz threw a pitch: Seven years.

“I haven’t pitched since I played in the [North Ridgeville] city league when I was 7,” Ortiz told the Chronicle Telegram. “I haven’t really practiced since then. My coach said he wanted to give me a chance on the mound. I never expected to throw a perfect game.

“It just kind of happened.”

The team it happened to had nothing on Ortiz. Lake Ridge rolled to a 20-0, mercy rule victory against Lawrence (Ohio) High, with Ortiz shutting down Lawrence on only two pitches; a fastball and a change-up. The freshman is so new to pitching that he hasn’t even toyed with a curveball yet, but his control was so spot-on against Lawrence that he retired a total of 15 batters on just 62 pitches, an average of just more than 4 per batter.

For Ortiz, the rise to pitching prominence has truly come out of center field, where he tends to split his time when he isn’t on the mound. The teen has also started at shortstop, and entered the season anticipating a few relief pitching opportunities when his teammates struggled.

Instead, he’s emerged as one of the team’s mound bedrocks, much to the chagrin of Lawrence and any other squads that happen to land Lake Ridge Academy on their late season schedule.

“Niko has good command and control of his pitching,” Lake Ridge coach Jason Dimacchia told the Chronicle Telegram. “We recognized that he had decent velocity and good arm strength so we wanted to give him a shot.

“He’s a phenomenal athlete. The sky is pretty much the limit for him. He has a baseball background and loves the game. He’s in a program where he plays varsity as a freshman and I can easily see Nick being one of the top players in the county when he’s a senior. He’s got everything he needs to be successful.”

As first reported by Newsday, and later covered by USA Today, among other sources, Zisis finally got a chance to compete in her first game on her squad’s senior night. Yet Zisis couldn’t just suit up for a game and play, because she suffers from a rare condition known as pulmonary stenosis, which limits the amount of blood that flows to her heart.

The decreased blood flow alone forced Zisis to undergo multiple operations, all of which required significant post-procedural physical and operational therapy.

Put those factors together, and Zisis is just about the least likely student to be safe competing on the lacrosse field. But in 2013, Zisis is also the only senior member of the Roslyn lacrosse team, so after some soul searching and gentle prodding, it was determined that Zisis would enter the game and play just a couple of minutes.

The senior, whose condition categorizes her as a learning disabled student, worked out for more than two weeks with the varsity team in practices, getting herself ready for Senior Night. Then, when the night came, Zisis didn’t just play, she was in the starting lineup.

That’s when the magic really unfolded. With just a couple minutes on the field to make an impact, Zisis didn’t waste any time. She registered a shot on goal with her first ever touch of the ball, scooping up a loose ball just more than 8 meters from goal and sending an effort at cage that instead sailed wide.

Her second attempt would be more accurate. Again scooping up a loose ball after a dropped pass within 10 meters of the cage, Zisis swiveled and scored, sending the Roslyn sideline into hysterics and Zisis into dreamland, where she remained until being carried off the field following the 13-8 Roslyn victory over Wheatland (N.Y.) High.

"We knew of her medical condition, but she was cleared to play in a short stint, for a couple of minutes," Roslyn coach Michelle Crennan told USA Today. "She prepared for this in practice and tried to built up her cardio endurance the last couple of weeks. I made sure she knew to communicate if she was having any problems.

"The focus wasn't on the game itself, but about making a tremendous experience and a memory."

Mission achieved, Roslyn, with a goal to boot.

“Believe me," Sahuaro coach Mark Chandler told azcentral sports. "I’m thinking to myself, ‘If we end up coming on the wrong end of this, that’s going to be the headline.’”

It took a single up the middle from 9-hole hitter Owen Sanchez to snap a 3-3 seventh-inning tie against Nogales (Ariz.) High and send the Cougars (27-5) into the state semifinals. In the end, Verdugo struck out 18 and didn't get the win on the mound.

Verdugo induced a couple groundouts -- in the fourth and sixth innings -- but still retired the side on a pair of dropped third strikes, according to the azcentral sports game story. His pitch count climbed over 100 in the sixth inning, so Chandler removed his star pitcher -- just as he had did during a Verdugo no-hit bid two years ago.

"All that’s great and fine," Chandler told the online publication, "but he’s got a future and we want to facilitate that as much as possible."

That future appears bright. Perfect Game USA ranks Verdugo as the No. 58 prospect in the Class of 2014. He had 15 strikeouts earlier in the year, according to azcentral sports, but he had no idea of his total when his coach went to the bullpen on Tuesday.

“I wasn’t counting them all in my head," he said, "but I kind of figured that I had a lot.”

If Verdugo hadn't pitched two innings of relief on Saturday, perhaps Chandler would have let the junior left-hander try to match the Division II single-game record of 21 strikeouts, set by Cholla (Tucson, Ariz.) High's Jesus Garcia in 1971.

Still, it would have been hard for him to match a state record that probably isn't falling anytime soon: 28, recorded in 1925 by Glendale (Ariz.) High's Elton Yancy.

It all started as a lighthearted prank at a powder puff football game, but ended with a 20-year-old in jail for Silly String.

As farcical as that may sound, it accurately describes what occurred near Palm Beach, Fla. on Tuesday, when a recent high school graduate was arrested for aggravated battery after he allegedly sprayed a Jupiter (Fla.) High staff member in the face with Silly String.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Joshua Melvin was one of four men who raided an annual Jupiter powder puff football game -- competed between girls rather than guys, without pads – and rushed onto the field wearing a ski mask and wielding a can of Silly String. Because a Jupiter staff member couldn’t tell what was inside the aerosol can that Melvin was carrying, he or she chased after the man to try and tackle him. When that staff member got close, he or she got a face full of Silly String.

There was no word of injury to the Jupiter staff member. In fact, if he or she was affected by the Silly String, that might be a notable first for the classic novelty product. In case anyone doesn't realize what Silly String looks and acts like when shot out of a can, you can check it out in the video directly below.

According to the Post, Melvin and his cohorts, who were quick enough to jump a nearby fence and escape, were only attempting to spray coaches and players in an act of lighthearted mischief.

His spraying of the Jupiter staff member was clearly an extension of that, though it was at closer range that the “stringing” administered to players and coaches during the quartet's run-by.

Perhaps because he had no real weapon and posed no practical threat to anyone, Melvin was released on Wednesday, after spending Tuesday night in the Jupiter town jail. There is still no word of whether charges could be filed against the other three men who took part in Melvin’s prank; at the moment they have quite literally outrun the long arm of the law.

As first reported by Sacramento TV news outlets KXTV and NBC affiliate KCRA, members of the Valley baseball team sprung into action after seeing a mother accidentally run over her own daughter in the parking lot. The mother was dropping off her daughter for an after school program when she accidentally hit the car in front of her, panicked and threw the auto into reverse. The rapid shift pinned her daughter under the car and rendered her immobile, all while putting her health in peril should the mother try and drive forward again.

As soon as the players heard screams for help they raced over, with a total of 16 varsity and junior varsity members of the Valley squad combining to lift the car up while Valley coach James Millholland pulled the trapped girl out from under the car.

"We all just ran out there as a team," varsity coach James Millholland told KCRA. "No one was saying much, and then the guys got around the car and just lifted it up. There was very little talking."

Both Sacramento-based television networks cited reports from the hospital saying that the girl had not suffered any significant injuries, with the players’ quick thinking saving the day, and her long term health.

"I think we did a good job. It kind of bothered me throughout school today," Valley player Jack Danho told KXTX. "It was still in my head. I was traumatized, but our quick thinking saved her life."

While the girl involved in the incident is a fellow teenager -- she reportedly attends Laguna Creek (Calif.) High -- she hasn’t been identified or come forward yet to thank the players who helped extricate her from true peril.

Of course, that hasn’t kept others from taking notice, with the Valley principal quick to applaud his students’ good judgment and rapid reaction of strength. Prep Rally is all too happy to join that party. Regardless of how the Valley season concludes, the members of the squad are clearly already winners.

In September, it took a legal injunction to ensure that a group of high school cheerleaders could continue to display religious quotes on motivational signs that their school’s football team would run through.

The story was borne out of the piety of a region, in this case a section of Texas that finds itself firmly in the state’s bible belt. The cheerleaders at Kountze (Texas) High held up signs emblazoned with Biblical verse for the hometown Tigers to run through. After their right to do so was challenged, the cheerleaders rapidly filed suit to gain a temporary injunction against the state.

That injunction was granted, and has since set the stage for a variety of Kountze activities that use cheerleader-made signs. Now, the cheerleaders can display their Biblical signs without concern, after a ruling by Texas District Judge Steven Thomas found that the cheerleaders should be able to use whatever text they like on pregame signs.

The case for the cheerleaders was argued by a Plano, Texas-based nonprofit law firm called the Liberty Institute, though the firm was hardly alone; popular local celebrities such as Texas governor Rick Perry and attorney general Greg Abbott have also been outspoken supporters of the cheerleaders’ case.

Still, as noted by the Online Sports Guys blog, the Kountze case is hardly the first to deal with freedom of religious expression related to a pregame routine at a prep sporting event. In fact, there have been two relatively similar scenarios in the state of Georgia in recent years alone, in the form of both Ridgeland (Ga.) High and Haralson County (Ga.) High's disputes with the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

While the ruling appears to have cleared the way for future use of Biblical verse in high school sports, some civil rights groups have already spoken out to insist that they will continue to fight against the use of any religious text in or connected with a scholastic event.

"High school football games are a quintessential school event and cheerleaders are a key part of that event," Martin B. Cominsky, Southwest Regional Director of the Anti Defamation League told Houston ABC affiliate KTRK. "This decision flies in the face of clear U.S. Supreme Court and other rulings. The religious banners blatantly convey a message that the school supports and promotes one religion over any other. Not only is that inappropriate, the court should have found it unconstitutional."

Those concerns no longer seem to have any effect on the Kountze cheerleaders, at least at the moment. Now they’ll get a chance to continue quoting scripture. Get ready for plenty more of “If God is for us, who can be against us?”, all coming to a Texas field near you.

As reported by the Associated Press and a variety of other Utah news outlets, the unnamed high school student who attacked Portillo will be charged with homicide by assault. The court-appointed prosecutor in the case, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, also insisted that the state will attempt to try the attacker as an adult. The teen will turn 18 in October, giving the court reasonable grounds to seek to charge him as an adult.

Should the 17-year-old be tried as an adult he would face a penalty of up to five years in prison if convicted.

While the charges facing the teen are significant, they could have been much worse as well. After much analysis, the court determined that they could not accurately expect to gain a conviction if they charged the goalie with murder or manslaughter.

For their part, those who have been most directly affected by this tragedy -- the Portillo family -- insist that they have no desires for vengeance against the teen, hoping only that the full criminal justice process be allowed to play out in full.

That may be just the latest, magnanimous, classy act by a family plunged into grief, It’s likely the family’s patience and understanding will be tested again before this entire episode concludes, but for now they will continue to focus on finding peace in the loss of their loved ones.

As reported by the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando (Fla.) Christian Prep three-sport (football-basketball-volleyball) star Mike Walmer somehow survived a one-car accident en route to school on Friday morning in which he was ejected from his car and traveled 65 feet in the air. More remarkable still, the starter on a recent Class 2A boys basketball state finalist, eventually emerged from the accident without any serious injuries whatsoever, and was back in school on Monday.

"While I was in midair, I asked God to please help me before I hit the ground," Walmer told the Sentinel. "I was bracing myself for the fall. And I felt like God just grabbed me and laid me down to the ground as soft as he could."

As MaxPreps noted, Walmer’s indestructibility in the wreck was particularly ironic given the fact that he was known as a hard-nosed grinder on the basketball floor. Walmer didn’t suffer a single broken bone while being flung 65 feet through the air and landing on the pavement, but did break his nose during basketball season.

Walmer, a senior who contributed to OCP’s varsity basketball and volleyball teams for all four seasons, was well enough after the weekend to attend an awards banquet at which he was named the school’s student athlete of the year. While that physical condition may have helped him bounce back quicker, his basketball coach made it clear that it took something more to keep him safe during his terrifying accident.

"I believe God gave me a second chance,'' Mikey told the Sentinel. "He wants me to do something big.''

Walmer already had the talent to do that, now he may just have the self belief and good fortune to do that as well.

In a startling performance that left everyone in his dust, Kiryu covered 100 meters in 10.01 seconds at the Mikio Oda Memorial in Hiroshima, Japan, tying the junior world record on April 29, according to the Hurriyet Daily News (h/t Huffington Post).

He clocked his record-breaking time in a qualifying heat, and then won the final in 10.03 seconds, defeating 20-year-old Olympian Ryota Yamagata by one-hundredth of a second.

“It’s like a dream," he told the Japanese media. "Honestly, I am surprised.”

Perhaps he shouldn't be too surprised. Kiryu broke the world youth 100-meter record as a 16-year-old twice last year, breaking the tape in 10.21 seconds in October and 10.19 seconds in November, according to the New Strait Times.

Kiryu’s performance late last month tied Trinidad and Tobago's Darrel Brown -- who won four silver medals at the World Championships from 2001-09 -- and American Jeff Demps -- a 4x100-meter silver medalist at last summer's London Olympics and a member of the New England Patriots this past NFL season. They were a year older than Kiryu when they recorded their 10.01-second times.

Next up for Kiryu: The Japanese record. Kiryu reportedly wrote "9.96 seconds" on a blackboard in his classroom at Rakunan (Kyoto, Japan) High, which would break the current national record of 10.00 seconds set by Koji Ito in 1998.

“There is a 100 percent chance that the time will dip below 10 seconds this year,” said Ito, who now serves as sprint director for the Japan Association of Athletics Federations.

Kiryu took his first shot at breaking 10.00 at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix on Sunday, but finished third behind 28-year-old American Mike Rodgers and 29-year-old Bahamian Derrick Atkins in 10.40 seconds while facing a headwind of 1.2 meters per second.

Still, the real prize is Bolt's 100-meter world record of 9.58 seconds from August 2009, and Kiryu has that one circled, too. "I want to run alongside Bolt (at the worlds)," he told the Japanese media, "and see how he is different from me."

Of all the ridiculous dunkers at the Ballislife competition, the 6-foot-4, 170-pound UCLA commit was the most remarkable, probably finding a few new future fans during his first impression on Los Angeles-area basketball nuts in Long Beach, Calif.

Sure, New Mexico-bound forward Tim Myles can jump over things. Chairs, teammates, you name it, he'll throw down a monster two-handed dunk over it.

Miami football commit Derrick Griffin can dunk, too. No doubt about it. Although, his teammate's soccer-style alley-oop is arguably just as impressive. Bend it like broham.

Likewise, Oregon-bound Jordan Bell and future Marquette Warrior Deonte Burton contort themselves mid-air in ways the pretzels at the snack bar only wish they could.

But Lavine -- dunk after dunk -- put on a show. He started with a between-the-legs ode to California's own J.R. Rider, and then followed with an airborne behind-the-back dunk that made Chris Webber's slam over Charles Barkley seem elementary in comparison.

LaVine probably could have walked away with the trophy right there. Instead, he threw down three more trophy-worthy flushes: one while looking down on the rim; another between-the-legs, off-the-backboard, 360-degree sort of thing that might as well be called The LaVine at this point; and a between-the-legs, up-and-under dunk that would have been extraordinary had he not just ripped off a slew of slams even more insane.

Indeed, it appears that the ever-escalating facilities war in the Lone Star State has reached Defcon Zero. The latest entrant to the realm of "anything you can do, I can do bigger" multi-million dollar facilities and stadium perks is set to be the Weslaco (Texas) Independent School District, serving a town of fewer than 40,000 citizens within 30 minutes of the Mexican border and McAllen.

As reported by the Morning Valley Star, and brought to Prep Rally’s attention by MaxPreps, Weslaco ISD director of instructional television Steve Valdez has proposed building a 27-by-48-foot jumbotron, a construction development that would give Weslaco the largest prep sports scoreboard in the nation.

“They say that football in Texas is king, so we doubt that anybody else in the country would have anything larger,” Valdez told the Valley Star.

As it turns out, Valdez is right. The massive, 43-foot screens that have been installed by fellow Texas schools Katy (Texas) High and Carthage (Texas) High currently hold the record for largest prep scoreboard (Carthage's is technically larger than Katy's), but both would easily be eclipsed by the proposed 48-foot jumbotron put forth by Valdez.

The Weslaco School Board plans to vote on the enormous scoreboard at its next meeting, with a proposed funding plan set forth by Valdez paying off the new expanded scoreboard in 10 years. The additional funds to pay for the scoreboard and its subsequent installation would come from more available sponsorship space along the side of the new scoreboard.

Naturally, the additional funds Valdez’s plan relies on assumes both continued interest in the scoreboard advertising opportunities and a similar rate for those advertisements. Those within the Weslaco ISD told the Valley Star that there is a rolling waiting list of 2-3 advertisers to earn a spot on the scoreboard. Maintenance of current rate pricing is more of a leap of faith, though there would stand to be at least as good a chance of rate increases as decreases, potentially earning the district more money than the cost of construction over the next decade.

While the scoreboard isn’t a reality yet, it certainly sounds like the Weslaco School Board is on board with Valdez’s proposal, both for civic pride and perceived financial advantages.

“If it’s going to pay for itself, like they say, ‘If we’re going to do it, let’s do it right,” Weslaco school board trustee Adrian Gonzalez told the Valley Star.

As first reported by the Oregonian, state 100-meter champion Thomas Tyner, the same Beaverton (Ore.) Aloha High football star and sprinter who ran for 634 yards and 10 touchdowns in a single game this fall, fell short of winning a race for one of the only times in his prep career on Friday. That the Oregon football recruit lost a race might not be entirely shocking, but who he fell short against is: A nearly 40-year-old government teacher at Aloha High named Scott Baker.

Naturally, there was a reason why Baker was able to best one of the top speedsters in the nation: He had a 45-meter head start. Essentially, the race was a 100-meter dash against a 55-meter dash, and it was still closer than most would expect for a disparity of 45 meters in distance traveled.

Of course, Tyner was giving up that distance willingly, and putting his personal pride on the line to help someone less fortunate in the process. The match race was staged to benefit a charity called Sparrow Clubs, which raises money for children striken with serious medical conditions. In 2013, the school has dedicated itself to raising money for a 2-year-old named Olivia Strohmeyer who was born with a form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Wanting to raise money to help fund Olivia’s condition, Baker came up with a plan. He challenged Tyner to a mano-a-mano race with any proceeds raised from the stunt going toward Olivia’s care. Tyner then took his invitation a step further, promising to give Baker a 1-meter head start for every $10 he raised.

In the end, Baker accepted a 45-meter head start, and that proved to be enough for Baker to escape with a rare victory against one of the nation’s top prep athletes … if only just enough.

"I gotta be honest. I couldn't feel my legs and I kind of pulled my groin at the beginning,” Baker told the Oregonian. “I want to say thank you to Thomas for doing this - I mean, that's the coolest thing ever, to come out and let me raise money and beat him just for Olivia. That's all it's about."

Tyner was quick to agree, he just couldn’t say so vocally as he struggled to catch his breath. After all, he’d just completed nearly catching someone while running almost twice as far.

As it turns out, the race was just a small part of the school’s commitment to Sparrow Clubs in 2012. According to the Oregonian, the school raised more than $16,000 for the cause.

That makes the $505-plus generated by Tyner’s invitational sprint against Baker a small contributor to the overall goal, though it hardly makes it less memorable for the teacher, superstar or his classmates, let alone the 2-year-old whose medical bills just got a bit lighter.

It would be one thing if Carlos Williams had racked up astronomical stats in one particular skill, earning a new state record related to that statistic in the process. He did that, and then some. In fact, he Williams has now set three state records, with as many as four others potentially up for grabs in the days ahead, depending on his progress at the plate.

As reported by the Memphis Commercial Appeal and MaxPreps, Williams -- a senior leadoff hitter and outfielder for Covington (Tenn.) High -- currently holds three all-time state records for baseball in the Volunteer State. The Class of 2013 two-sport star has more career steals than anyone in state history with 182, and also holds a state mark for most consecutive steals without being caught stealing. That mark is currently at 119.

Yet, as remarkable as both of those stolen bases marks are, it’s Williams’ national record that is truly remarkable: He has been hit by a pitch a national record 58 times in four years (the previous mark was 57).

Williams told the Commercial Appeal that his speed is a combination of God-given skill and his own work ethic.

"I've worked hard, but I'm still going to keep working harder,” Williams told the newspaper. “Maybe I can set some more records. I spend a lot of time studying pitchers. I'm always trying to get a scouting report and see who's pitching. And I spend a lot of time working on my jumps and my reads."

Yet Williams’ coach said it isn’t his star’s 6.18-second 60-yard speed that is most surprising; it’s his knack for getting on base in the most painful way possible.

"It's rare for a leadoff hitter to get hit that much,” Covington coach David Sage told the Commercial Appeal. “But it just shows how people have pitched around him his whole career.”

Pitching around him can only go so far toward limiting Williams’ success, as evidenced by his other career numbers. The speedster is currently moving up the Tennessee all-time state ranks for hits (188), walks (100), triples (17) and runs scored (208). With his complete package, there’s every chance that he might slide into a top-3 spot in one of those categories by the end of his senior year, too.

After that, the sky is the limit. The senior also starred as a running back and free safety on the football team and has signed to play at Ole Miss. Yet Williams could also be selected as high as the seventh or eighth round in the forthcoming MLB Entry draft, a position which might change his college football decision.

Either way, it seems safe to assume that Williams will keep on running, and that will make him a valuable threat for whoever he suits up for.

Marvin Bagley III's highlight video -- courtesy of City League Hoops guru Ty Kish -- may only consist of a series of layups and jump shots, but the young 6-foot-8 southpaw from the Class of 2018 already owns a Division I scholarship offer.

Northern Arizona extended an offer on Tuesday afternoon, according to a Twitter post from DunkDog.com National Scouting and Recruiting Coordinator Spencer Pulliam. Arizona State is also reportedly interested in the youngster, and could extend a scholarship offer in the not-too-distant future.

The Lumberjacks haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2000, so what's the harm in NAU coach Jack Murphy offering a scholarship to a 13-year-old who throws down alley-oops on the regular and even dunked so hard that he once broke a basket?

Murphy has a number of factors going against him ever landing the in-state sensation. Major DI programs will be circling soon enough, especially since North Carolina coach Roy Williams just extended his first ever offer to a freshman.

Meanwhile, MiddleSchoolElite.com reportedly connected the Bagleys with the Towns family, who raised Karl Towns Jr. -- an elite Class of 2014 prospect who has verbaled to Kentucky while maintaining a 4.1 GPA at St. Joseph (Metuchen, N.J.) High. Bagley III already ranks second in the Class of 2018, according to The Hoop Scoop.

Strike three against NAU's chances: Bagley told Basketball Spotlight his favorite college basketball program is Arizona State University, where his grandfather played in the 1960s. It's only a matter of time before ASU coach Herb Sendek gets in the game.

As for the added pressure of swirling scholarships at the age of 13, Bagley was already playing club ball around the country for California Basketball Academy's Sacramento-based 916 Select, Tennessee-based We All Can Go All-Stars and the hometown Team Bibby -- an AAU team operated by former Wildcats star Mike Bibby.

BS: Who’s your favorite player and why?
MB3: It’s hard to choose just one favorite player because I like so many. If I had to narrow it down, my two favorites would be Kevin Durant & Blake Griffin. I like Kevin Durant because he can score in so many ways, and Blake Griffin because he’s an unbelievable dunker.

BS: If you could have dinner with one person, who would you select and why?
MB3: I would want to have dinner with Michael Jordan, because he’s the best ever and I would love to hear advice from him directly to me about how I could become the best ever.

Bagley's best quality? "Work ethic." And his worst? "I may expect too much from myself." Sounds like every other elite basketball recruit in the country. Except he's 13.

Perhaps that’s just because America isn’t acquainted with the groundhogs in Bridgeton, N.J. After a weekend escapade that is apparently more befitting Al Capone than ol’ Phil, the entire image of groundhogs may need to be re-examined. In the span of two days, one very large groundhog terrorized a Little League and youth football squad, was captured, broke free, was re-captured and caged, and broke out of a cage and escaped.

In short, he’s a one animal crime boss taking over a small town in New Jersey. Move over Caddyshack gopher, you've got company in the ferocious rodent world.

The tales of the Bridgeton groundhog were breathlessly reported by the South Jersey Times, which followed its chronicles through regular updates from the administration of the Bridgeton Little League. According to the newspaper, here’s how the entire mad cap episode played out:

• Members of the Bridgeton Midget Football League noticed a cute looking groundhog near the parking lot outside their facility. The animal was directly across the street from where they stood, so they moved over closer to get a better look at the first groundhog they had ever encountered.
• Evidently that angered the animal, with the groundhog charging after the football players. The football players ran, heading directly for the Bridgeton Little League field where a game was ongoing. The groundhog followed in hot pursuit.
• The animal ran on to the field and kept charging after kids. The umpire working the game, Brandon Dennis, put himself in front of a crowd of terrified children as the groundhog “bared its teeth”. The animal responded by chasing after Dennis.
• In an attempt to free Dennis from the animal’s reign of terror, Bridgeton Little League President T. Carl Hemple stepped in. The groundhog immediately began chasing him … all the way to his car.

So far, the incident is a clear cut case of a threatened animal reacting angrily to an unforeseen threat to its environment. But this is the point where the Bridgeton groundhog becomes the stuff of Animal Planet legend.

“The groundhog went under the car,’’ said Hemple.

He decided to start the car.

The groundhog escaped the roar of the motor and headed for the Bridgeton Sports Hall of Fame.

“It found a hole in the fence surrounding the air conditioning unit,’’ said Hemple.

Hemple called the police.

“They were there in two minutes,’’ he said. “They got one of those loops on a stick around its neck.’’

It broke the loop.

“I’m telling you, it was big,’’ said Hemple.

Yes, the groundhog was evidently “re-looped” and brought to the nearby animal hospital. Yet the animal, which Hemple estimated weighed 20 pounds (think a large terrier), wouldn’t be contained that easily. Instead, when the veterinarian who runs the Wilwynn Animal Hospital arrived the following morning to care for the groundhog, the animal had escaped from the cage.

Here’s the spooky part: The cage was still locked, and inside it was an empty can of cat food … and no groundhog.

The vet in question insisted that the animal would not be a valid health risk because he did not bite anyone during his afternoon reign of terror. Still, it’s clear that the rodent got the last maniacal laugh in a bizarre encounter that left Hemple and everyone in the larger Bridgeton community completely flummoxed.

“[Little League coaches have training for all threats] But not groundhogs,” Hemple told the South Jersey Times. “Not animals coming out of the woods.”

The bill, which passed the Senate by a decisive 21-7 vote on April 25, now rests with the Texas House before it's signed into law, according to The Dallas Morning News. If the bill is successful there, it will open the doors for many home-schooled athletes in Texas.

Texas is not the only state acting to make it easier for students of Tebow's ilk to take part in mainstream high school competition. Indiana passed a similar law May 1, and half the nation's states have already adopted similar bills named for Tebow, the Heisman Trophy winner who led Nease (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) High to a state title and captured Florida's Mr. Football honor as a high school senior while being homeschooled in 2005.

Tebow and six-time NFL Pro Bowler Jason Taylor, who played for Woodland Hills (Pittsburgh, Pa.) High while being homeschooled in the early 1990s, have championed the rights of homeschooled student-athletes to varying degrees of success across the country.

Recently, the Alabama Senate rejected the Tim Tebow Act, the Arkansas House passed the bill and both Tennessee and North Carolina are currently in the legislative process.

A faction of public educators in Texas opposed the bill, but the Texas Home School Coalition supported it despite some members of the homeschool community who believe the law might lead to further government oversight, according to The Morning News.

Texas features as many as 320,000 homeschooled students and parents, the THSC said.

Take UConn freshman Moriah Jefferson for example. Before helping the Huskies to their eighth NCAA women's basketball title this past season, she was a homeschooled high school hoopster and McDonald's All-American from Glenn Heights, Texas.

Jefferson led Texas Home Educations Sports Association (THESA) to five National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships titles, but never had the option of competing in University Interscholastic League sanctioned events for public high schools.

Tebow's high school days may seem like a distant memory as he looks for more work somewhere in the NFL, but he's still making an impact on prep sports.

Ever since he gave his verbal commitment, Hood (@EHood34) has been tweeting just about every other elite junior recruit with an offer from the Irish, encouraging them to follow him to South Bend (h/t The Big Lead).

"It's all I think about as soon as I'm done with my workouts," Hood told the South Bend Tribune. "All right, what am I going to do to help my university get better? It's just my love for ND showing."

Using the hashtag #GoldenArmy14, Hood has reached out to quarterbacks, wide receivers, offensive linemen, linebackers and defensive lineman -- anybody who might make his job easier when he arrives on campus after his prep senior season.

Mustipher, Byrne, Hayes and Trumbetti had already committed to Notre Dame before Hood began his Twitter campaign, but Nelson gave his verbal after Hood reached out with the following tweet: "The Q knows where to be, got to get the #QtoND."

Coincidence? Perhaps. But maybe not if Frazier and Bars -- both of whom have Irish offers and have not yet committed -- join Notre Dame's Class of 2014 in the near future.

"Even though we're all over the place, we're coming together and we're still showing that we can be a strong unit even if we're from different areas, from different regions, from different backgrounds," added Hood. "Notre Dame takes everybody. It's a special place, and I'm just trying to get that across to these guys. I think they're feeling the message."

If the NFL isn't in Hood's future, he at least should land a job somewhere as a Social Media Recruiting Coordinator. And others are sure to follow.

That’s because the sons of Clemens, Pettitte and Biggio are all excelling at Houston-area schools, leading their teams to the state playoffs. As reported by Hosuton ABC affiliate KTRK, all three of their respective squads emerged victorious from first round playoff contests over the weekend and all of the teenagers involved were quick to heap praise on their counterparts, friends from their time together when their fathers starred at Minute Maid Park.

"All the time, when I would get out of school, we would go," Biggio's son Cavan told KTRK. "My mom would let me go with my dad. We would go, just hang out on the field, just go hangout in the clubhouse the entire time; play catch and watch them do everything."

Now, more than a decade later, Cavan Biggio, Kacy and Kody Clemens and Josh Pettitte are bona fide baseball stars in their own right. Cavan Biggio is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior who has signed to play baseball at Notre Dame, but is also a likely MLB draft pick. The son of Craig Biggio, arguably the most revered Astros position player in franchise history, Biggio is considered one of the better hitters in the nation among the Class of 2013.

Kacy and Kody Clemens, meanwhile, are stars for Houston (Texas) Memorial High. Kacy is the team’s ace, a senior signee for the University of Texas who, like the younger Biggio, could find his name called during the MLB draft. Meanwhile, Kody Clemens surprised by earning a starting spot at shortstop while still a sophomore at the school. With two years still left in his high school career, Kody is also seen as a high upside prospect with major Division I or even MLB potential.

As for Josh Pettitte, his prior success has already landed him on the pages of Prep Rally in the past. The Baylor signee tossed a no-hitter earlier in his senior season at Deer Park (Texas) High and quickly earned attention from his father’s Yankees teammates like C.C. Sabathia, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain.

As for which of the teenagers’ three current teams has the best chance of earning a state crown, none of the longtime friends is overly competitive with one another about their squad’s chances. Rather, they seem happy to congratulate each other whenever another reaches a landmark accomplishment.

"You know, it's cool to check Twitter," Kacy Clemens told KTRK. "Cavan hit a bomb; Josh [Pettitte] is doing great."

Added Kacy Clemens: "We separated after my dad stop playing and Craig stopped playing, but it's so cool to see how everyone is doing.”

As reported by the Miami Herald and captured on video posted on YouTube, STA finally got the better of Belen Jesuit by a final score of 13-10, capturing the school’s first water polo title in the process.

With the title decided, the teams lined up to walk through the traditional handshake line, a classic high school sports gesture aimed at maintaining a sense of friendship and collegiality. What resulted was a fracas when a Belen player used the opportunity to launch one of his STA rivals into the pool rather than shake his hand.

The resulting kerfuffle was exactly what you would expect to emerge from two rivals in such a highly-charged faceoff. STA players immediately jumped in to defend their now-soggy teammate, while Belen players responded in kind once the STA players reached the handshake line instigator. Eventually coaches from both teams were able to intervene and stop the shoving from escalating into something worse, though not before emotions were frayed and tensions reached a piqued level.

Eventually, the teams made up, with a group of Belen players apologizing to their rivals for the teammate’s actions, though that hardly makes his little shoving fit any more sportsmanlike.

Considering the fact that the game marked the final matchup of the 2013 season, that shove could mark the last act of one young man’s water polo career. That’s a shame, both for him, his school and the sense of friendship fostered when high school sports work as they should.

Of the likely places for a debate over religious free expression to erupt, a Texas high school track and field meet probably wasn’t high on the list.

Remarkably, that’s precisely where one athlete’s reactionary gesture has led to a broader discussion about what is appropriate at public school events, after a Columbus (Texas) High relay team was disqualified for one of their member’s heavenward gesture. The incident occurred in Columbus, where the track and field team was hosting a meet with the goal of qualify athletes for the state championship meet later in May.

As first reported by Houston CBS affiliate KHOU, the school’s 4x100-meter relay squad achieved just that in winning its race decisively. The anchor of that 4x100 squad was junior Derrick Hayes, who ran a particularly blazing split and celebrated the team’s state qualification with a simple finger point to the heavens.

The gesture is a common one in sports -- remember Sammy Sosa or Barry Bonds after breaking the single season home run record? -- but on this occasion, it was deemed to have run afoul of a University Interscholastic League (UIL) regulation barring excessive celebration.

Once officials at the Columbus meet determined that Hayes had violated the excessive celebration rules, the entire 4x100-meter squad was disqualified and effectively barred from the state championships. The team will not get another chance to qualify for the meet.

“He put his hand by his ear and pointed to the heavens,” Hayes’ father, KC Hayes, told KHOU. “It was a reaction. You’re brought up your whole life that God gives you good things, you’re blessed.”

While there appears to be little recourse for the runners to be reinstated in the state championships, that hardly means that the surprising disqualification is a closed issue. Instead, residents around the area have spoken up in support of the teen athlete and questioning the wisdom of any UIL rule that would prohibit a form of religious free expression.

“I don’t see what the big deal is,” Columbus resident Laporchia Miller told KHOU. “When people are thanking God, he’s the reason we live.”

Added Weimar resident Steve Williams, when the station told him that it was policy to bar any hand gestures under the excessive celebration rules:

“Well, then it’s not a good policy.”

As reported by the Associated Press and a variety of Utah news outlets, 46-year-old Ricardo Portillo died Saturday at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, just outside Salt Lake City. The referee had been hospitalized there since the attack on April 27, where Portillo issued a yellow card to a player in a recreational match and was attacked by the player with a strong punch to his head.

The AP has reported that the player in question was a goalie, competing in a game at Taylorsville (Utah) Eisenhower Junior High. The yellow card was connected with a play on a corner kick, where Portillo saw the goalkeeper in question push an opponent and decided the action was worthy of a formal caution. As he wrote down the goalie’s name in his notebook, the player reportedly snuck up alongside the ref and punched him directly in the head.

"When he was writing down his notes, he just came out of nowhere and punched him," Johanna Portillo, the victim’s daughter, told the AP.

Portillo’s reaction to the punch was not immediate, but was frightening. The 46-year-old reportedly said he felt fine in the immediate aftermath of the attack, but then asked to be held up because he felt dizzy. Portillo then sat down on the field and began vomiting blood, eliciting panicked calls for an emergency ambulance at the field.

The goalie in question has since been booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault, though he could face additional charges now that Portillo has died. There has also been an ongoing debate about whether to charge the teen as an adult, despite the fact that he is 17 and not 18-years-old.

The now-deadly attack is just the latest disturbing example of aggressive action against referees going far beyond the realm of what is even remotely acceptable. More often it has been parents attacking referees, though players have occasionally gone beyond the realm of the reasonable in their reactions as well.

Most recently, a parent of an athlete in a Nebraska seventh-grade church basketball league attacked a referee who had his glasses snapped in half. Similarly, a March youth hockey game in Hamilton, Ontario, was the site of a parental attack on a referee who had the temerity (in their eyes) to break up a potential fight between players of the teams in the game was was officiating.

Perhaps the most disturbing attack before the Taylorsville tragedy came in Florida in 2011, where a group of players and coaches violently attacked a referee at a Sarasota youth football game.

Youth and prep soccer hasn't been free of violence in the past, either. While former New Mexico women's soccer player Elizabeth Lambert remains the benchmark for aggressive and violent play, Lewisville (S.C.) High athlete Annette McCullough received an assault charge for aggressive attacking a foe in a 2012 game and, in Utah, Salt Lake City (Utah) East High senior Petiola Manu was notably caught violently kneeing a foe during a game as well.

One can only hope that the lessons from this attack -- and the subsequent jail time that the teen in question is likely to serve -- will provide ample deterrent for future athletes and parents who struggle to contain their emotions in the midst of what is just a game, even if similar incidents in the past haven't succeeded in doing so.

The player you see scoring the miraculous goal in the video above is Philadelphia (Penn.) La Salle College High senior Stefan Bergman, a beefy defenseman who is headed to play at Michigan in 2014. Yet Bergman didn’t land his Michigan scholarship for his smooth stick handling, let alone his long distance shot.

Rather, Bergman is seen as a “positional” defenseman, the kind of solid bedrock player who doesn’t make mistakes that cost goals more than he makes plays that set up goals.

That scouting report serves to make his recent foray into the goal scoring charts all the more remarkable. Facing off against elite private school rival Haverford (Penn.) School, Bergman found himself to the left of the cage starting a clear, desperately searching for someone open up the field.

When he couldn’t find anyone, Bergman sent his gaze further up the field and noticed that Haverford goalie Jake Landman had drifted upfield, leaving him off his line in front of goal.

From there, Bergman didn’t hesitate, launching a full 80-yard strike toward the Haverford cage, where the ball landed smoothly over Landman, sending the La Salle sideline into delirium.

The goal gave La Salle a 6-3 lead in the second quarter, though that edge proved to be illusory, with Haverford mounting a second half rally.

As it turns out, the goal was more than just a simple highlight, too; La Salle eventually pulled out an 11-9 victory.

The final score may be what is most important for Bergman and his teammates, but it seems likely that the cult legend of his one big goal will outlast the game, and in all likelihood the rest of the La Salle season.
