For Holland Reynolds, there was never a question of whether she would cross the finish line at the California Division 5 girls cross-country state championship race. It was everyone else who began to doubt she could make it when she collapsed in agony just feet short of the final timing mat.
Yet, as outlined in detail in a New York Times article, any pain the senior runner felt couldn't keep her from finishing, not with a state title for her team on the line. Not with the team dedicating their race to a coach battling the late stages of ALS; Lou Gehrig's Disease.
"I was going to make my move," Reynolds told the New York Times, "but for some reason my legs just gave out. I was confused, and I started to slow down."
What hit Reynolds -- one of the most decorated runners for San Francisco University High School's girls cross-country team -- was one of the worst cases of hitting the wall imaginable. As you can see at the 19:30 mark of this video, instead of hitting her stride, Reynolds began to walk steeply hunched as she hit the homestretch. Then, just as it appeared she would make it to the line after all, Reynolds collapsed altogether. If you want to see the full, excruciating but powerful series of photos, just keep reading. We have them thanks to the Runners Space video at the end of this piece.

Here's how Reynolds' coach, Jim Tracy, described the final stages of his senior star's run.
"I thought, ‘This isn't right,'" he said. "‘Holland should be here already.'"
Tracy, who wears braces on his legs and his back and walks with difficulty, made his way to the course and found Reynolds, half a mile out, barely running and weaving across the course."She usually runs with a slightly bent upper torso," Tracy said. "But this had twisted her over even more. It looked like she was barely able to keep herself stabilized. It was a grisly sight."
Tracy said Reynolds looked at him out of the corner of her eye.
"But her vision was locked on her goal," he said. "I'd never seen anything like it. It was like a mask of determination. I've seen that so many times when she's in front, but this time she was getting buried. People were flying past her."
Though it took more than 20 seconds for Reynolds to cross the final two yards, the important thing was that she made it. By crossing the line when she did -- thanks in part to the help of a race official, who walked over to check on her and then encouraged her to make it to the mat -- Reynolds ensured that University High won the Division 5 girls team title, the school's eighth state title, which is more than any other school in California history.
She had to be placed in an ambulance immediately after finishing, but Reynolds didn't miss out on the celebration, either. Within an hour of the end of the race, the senior's teammates presented her with her medal in the ambulance itself. She made it home later that night, and has completed a full recovery since.
That might be more than can be said for any of those who watched Reynolds crawl across the finish, with her determination leaving a lingering effect on all who were there.
"I was encouraging her," Brian Weaver, the race official who was first to reach Reynolds near the finish line, told the New York Times. "I said, ‘You can do this.' She was nodding her head and crawling, and I was saying, ‘Nice and easy, don't force it.'
"I would have picked her up and carried her straight to the ambulance, but she was able to make eye contact with me. Her body was tired, but she was mentally all there."
As promised, here's a shot-by-shot sequence of Reynolds' heroic finish, unaltered in any way.

A hero is a mortal who does something special at a special time.
I will never for get the marathon runner who hit the wall at the olympics and She finished the race even though she was was not in the top runners. She was going to give it all to finish the race for her country. Their are times when people in sports go beyond the wall to finish. The same in for those who were able to hang on to life long enought to get a transplant or finish with cemotherapy and winn the race. Its not neccesaryly heroic, but it is way beyond what we as human expect.
Good job . reynolds, very good job, you are a winner
for those that came up with some really stupid comments the kid shows alot more heart and guts to finish what she started. even when it meant she had to make it through the pain to finish. shows she accomplished more with a warriors mentality than some here failed to do as grown adults.
i see all of you made it through with such determination to tear another person down for something she did!! who cares about what the circumstances were !! she did it for her coach!! what have all of you done lately for someone else other than run your mouths and tear them down!! if they gave out medals for that all of you would be gold medal winners!! I challenge all of you to do something for someone else and post it!! Let's see how many of you would have your picture on anything anywhere!! Let's see if anyone can post something good about someone and praise and honor them other than yourselves!!
It must've meant a lot to her otherwise she would not have gone to the most extreme to finnish. Great show of determination.
I tried eating a 40 oz. steak once, I ate and ate and ate some more. I ate until I couldn't eat another bite but somehow forcefed myself the last bite then threw up all over the place. I was an inspiration to everyone!!
Look at me, I'm a hero!!! lol!!
Inspirational, yes, a hero? ...not at all. The term hero is used far too loosely today. Firemen are NOT heros!!! Firemen are trained to save lives, that's what they signed up for, now if a man who isn't trained to save lives runs into a burning building and saves a life, HERO FOR SURE! Same goes for policemen, they train for certain situations, it's their job, they're NOT heros, they're just people doing their jobs.
If I were rescued, I wouldn't call my rescuer a hero, I would say thank you for doing your job.
The Hamster - you're a f*cking idiot.

I heard she was actually just starting her period... No big deal, if you search this video on youtube you can see the nurse giving her a tampon. After having sex with the coach she though she was pregnant, but she ran anyways. I hope wikileaks publishes the real true story. For shame on all you calling this girl a hero, a girl that sleeps with older men for money is no american hero.
Why are there any negative posts about this? The girl hit the wall, but overcame it, out of her desire to show appreciation for her dying coach. This is truly inspirational and anyone who says otherwise is just being a jerk.
David stop your showing your idiocy, I run competively and coach High School cross country and Track and let me tell you, sometimes your brain can push you above and beyond what your body can do physically, and it takes a special kind of runner to be able to do that. The fact that she had the strength to be able to find the energy to crawl to the finish line is astonishing and ive seen runner collapse before and be able to cross the finish line!!
Stop it folks it's teenage girl melodrama. They're always fine a few minutes later. As a coach, I've seen it many times. Title IX can't change genetics.
How sad to call this girl a hero. A hero is someone who, without obligation, places themselves in imminent danger to save others. i.e. a soldier jumping onto a grenade to save his platoon or a guy running into a burning building to save a baby. This girl showed determination but is NOT A HERO.
I see the word "heroic" has lost all meaning.
Profound bravery and good looks too. Nice combo.
Its always amazing how moronic men can be. Its amazing there are any women who aren't lesbians bashing them for every little thing. I wonder how many of these tools would be able to finish a race if they got a little ol cramp or something let alone whatever happened this girl to ultimately shut her body completely down.
I had a real bad toe cramp taking trash out..I kept pushing myself to get to the curb and then eventually I made it back to couch, what a day.
I am a military memember and ive been to iraq and to afghanastan on multiple occassions. To see this young lady fight to get across that line for her team, her coach, and herself makes me proud to be an american. That is true determination and heart. I would like to thank her for that display of heart. Ive shown this video to my troops as an example of the type of determination and heart needed to survivie not only on the battle field but in life. She is the reason why we fight so hard for our country.
FN awesome!! Mental toughness is so underestimated. We so often take ourselves out the equation by thinking,im done". It s at that moment when we must say"im not done,I have some more in me"! Until you have been to the edge and felt this way,you cant know how mental toughness comes into play. I have felt like I was finished before, only to push on and complete what I was trying to do.You learn about yourself You surprise yourself You realize how other people have been able to push through their endeavors. Be mentally tough The mind is a terrible thing to waste
Would have been cool if they told why she collapsed or something.
Dehydration?
I ran cross country for three years. Usually this happens when the temperature is a lot warmer than you would suspect and you end up not drinking enough water.
One of my friends had a similar episode. The problem is (well not a problem since it wouldn't matter, I guess) one slower teammate helped him across. Yes the right thing to do but also that DQs both of them.
So if anyone wonders why no one helped her cross... that is why.
It is scary to watch, though. When I saw it happen, it was at counties and there was no ambulance or EMT on site. People think no one can get hurt since it isn't a contact sport. Very incorrect. In one race I watched, a kid got a compound dislocation in his ankle in the final stretch.
Overall, a great story.
Our current society is too full of people who want a hand out and do not know what determination, hard work, striving for a goal, sacrifice, and guts actually mean. Very moving story, I am glad that we still have an avenue where our young people can give it all. All of you haters can sit back down and clap as the true champions run by.
at work yesterday i got a cramp so bad in my neck and head. it hurt so bad, but i kept working!
