Four Earn Phil Steele All-Pac-12 Honors

In the wake of the first new staff announcements for newly-christened California head coach Sonny Dykes, four Golden Bears players were named to Phil Steele's 2012 Postseason All-Pac-12 Team announced on Tuesday.

Junior wide receiver Keenan Allen -- who has declared for the NFL Draft, forgoing his senior year -- was selected as both a first-team punt returner and third-team wide receiver. Senior offensive lineman Brian Schwenke and junior placekicker Vincenzo D'Amato picked up second-team honors, while junior cornerback Steve Williams was a third-team defensive pick as a defensive back.

Allen finished the 2012 campaign with team highs of 61 receptions, 737 receiving yards and six touchdown catches despite missing the final three games due to a knee injury, suffered in the final moments of a loss to Utah.

Allen earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors at wide receiver from the league's coaches. At the end of the 2012 regular season, Allen ranked third in the Pac-12 and 22nd nationally in per-game receptions (6.78 rpg), as well as sixth in the league and 36th nationally in receiving yards (81.89 ypg). In addition, he led the conference and ranked fifth nationally in punt returns with an average of 14.13 yards per return, while ranking 10th in the conference and 67th nationally in all-purpose yardage (109.78), and 22nd in the Pac-12 in scoring (5.33 ppg).

In the final game of Allen's 2012 season and career in Salt Lake City, he became Cal's all-time leader in receptions with 205 to surpass former record-holder Geoff McArthur (202 catches from 2000-04). Allen announced on Dec. 5 that he would enter the 2013 NFL Draft. Allen is also in the career record books along with brother and quarterback Zach Maynard for the longest pass play in school history when the pair connected for a 90-yard score at Washington in 2011.

Allen's 13 catches against USC in 2011 is tied for third on Cal's all-time single-game reception list, while his 197 receiving yards at Washington the same season is fifth. In addition, he equaled DeSean Jackson as the fastest player in Cal history to reach both 1,000 career receiving yards in his 16th career game vs. Utah and 100 career receptions in his 18th contest against Washington State, both in 2011, as Jackson reached both respective marks in 2006 in the same number of total games in his career. Allen also totaled 3,458 all purpose yards to rank just outside the school's all-time top 10, adding 30 rushes for 258 yards (7.7 ypr) and two touchdowns on the ground, 21 punt returns for 252 yards, and 18 kick returns for 406 yards. He caught a pass in each of the 33 games (29 starts) he played in at Cal from 2010-12, scoring 120 points on 17 touchdown receptions, two scoring runs and one punt return TD. He is also one of only two players in Cal history to have two single seasons among the school's top-10 all-time in receptions. His 98 receptions for 1,343 yards in 2011 were both second, while his 61 receptions in 2012 ranked ninth.

D'Amato was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection, and ended the 2012 regular season as the conference's per-game leader in field goals made (1.33 per game) while ranking fifth in the league in field goal percentage (16-for-23, 69.6%). He was also tied for 31st nationally in field goals made. D'Amato scored a team and career-high 78 points in 2012, making 30-of-33 extra points to add to his 16 field goals. He ranked seventh in the conference in scoring among kickers (6.5 ppg) and tied for 14th in the conference overall. D'Amato made 11 consecutive field goals at one point during the campaign. He is Cal's active career scoring leader with 130 points, making 23-of-35 field goals and 61-of-64 extra-point attempts since he began his Cal career in 2009.

Schwenke, a first-team All-Pac-12 pick, was one of only five players to start each of the team's 12 games in 2012. He finished his career with 48 games played out of a possible total of 50, while starting 36 contests over his four seasons with the Bears. After making each of his first 24 starts at either left guard (16) or right guard (8) during the 2010 and 2011 campaigns, Schwenke moved to center during the spring of 2012 and made all 12 of his starts as a senior at the position. He added his first career reception for three yards in 2012 after coming up with a batted ball.

Williams shared the club lead in 2012 with three picks, while his 10 pass breakups and 13 passes defended were both team highs, with the latter ranked tied for sixth in the conference at the end of the 2012 regular season with a per-game average of 1.08. He was also third among all Cal players with 80 tackles and tied for 15th in the conference with an average of 6.7 stops per game. Williams added 7.0 tackles for loss (-18 yards) and one forced fumble in 2012. His career totals include 150 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss (-22 yards), 1.0 sack (-2 yards), six interceptions for 45 return yards, 25 pass breakups, 31 passes defended and three forced fumbles.

Allen Declares

BERKELEY -- California junior wide receiver/punt returner Keenan Allen announced on Wednesday that he intends to forego his senior season in Berkeley and enter the 2013 NFL Draft. Allen did not play the final three games of the 2012 season due to an injury to his posterior cruciate ligament, suffered in the waning moments of the loss to Utah.

Allen finishes his Cal career as the program's all-time receptions leader (205), and ranks third in Bears history with 2.570 receiving yards. He is also seventh all-time with 17 touchdown grabs.

"I am grateful for all of the opportunities the University of California has provided me over the past three seasons," Allen said in a statement. "The experience and friendships I have gained at Cal will help me throughout my life both on and off the field. I have always dreamed of having an opportunity to play in the NFL, and my time at Cal has helped me get to the point in my career where I believe I am ready to take that next step. I am thankful for my experience at Cal and am excited about what the future holds."

Allen is also in the career record books along with his brother and quarterback Zach Maynard -- who did not play in the final two games due to a lower leg injury suffered against Washington -- for the longest pass play in school history when the pair connected for a 90-yard score at Washington in 2011.

Allen also totaled 3,458 all purpose yards to rank just outside the school's all-time top 10, adding 30 rushes for 258 yards (7.7 ypr) and two touchdowns on the ground. Allen also returned 21 punt returns for a total of 252 yards, and 18 kick returns for 406 yards. He caught a pass in each of the 33 games (29 starts) he played in at Cal from 2010-12, scoring 120 points on 17 touchdown receptions, two scoring runs and one punt return TD -- which came this season against Southern Utah.

Allen's career was highlighted by his 2011 sophomore season when he posted career highs of 98 receptions and 1,343 receiving yards that were both second on Cal's all-time single-season lists, while adding a career-high-tying six touchdown catches. Allen earned first-teamed All-Pac-12 honors and was one of 10 national semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award in 2011. His averages of 7.54 receptions and 103.31 receiving yards per game ranked second and fourth nationally, while respectively checking in at 11th and 10th nationally. He briefly led the nation in receiving yards per game for two weeks midway through the campaign and also got to the 1,000-yard single-season receiving mark faster than anyone else in school history in the ninth game of the campaign against Washington State.

Despite his shortened junior season, Allen earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 recognition and lead the team with 61 receptions, 737 receiving yards and a career-high-tying six touchdown catches, with five of the scoring grabs coming over his final five contests. At the end of the 2012 regular season, Allen ranked third in the Pac-12 and 22nd nationally in receptions (6.78 rpg), as well as sixth in the league and 36th nationally in receiving yards (81.89). He also was the team's top punt returner for the first time in his career and led the Pac-12 in punt returns, averaging 14.13 yards per return with 252 yards and a touchdown on 21 returns.

Allen posted one of the top seasons by a true freshman wide receiver in school history at Cal in 2010 after coming to Berkeley as a five-star recruit that was one of the most heralded in the nation in the 2010 signing class. Allen was afourth-team Freshman All-American selection by Phil Steele and an honorable mention Freshman All-American according to College Football News when he broke Cal's record for receptions by a true freshman with 46 for 490 receiving yards, surpassing Jackson's previous mark of 38. He also added a team-high five touchdown grabs and led the squad with a kick return average of 22.56 yards per return on a team-high 18 returns. He had one of the most memorable debuts in Cal football history in the season opener against UC Davis when he caught four passes for a season-high 120 yards, including a season-long 48-yard touchdown reception, while totaling 176 all purpose yards by adding 38 yards rushing and a touchdown on three carries, as well as one kick return for 18 yards.

58 — Chris Adcock, OL, 6-3, 300, So., 1L, Rowlett, TX (Dallas Christian HS)

Adcock started 11 of 12 games at right guard and played in all 12, while picking up his first career tackle.

21 — Keenan Allen, WR, 6-3, 210, Jr., 2L, Greensboro, NC (Northern Guilford HS/Grimsley HS)

Allen finished with team highs of 61 receptions, 737 receiving yards and six touchdown catches in 2012 despite missing the final three games due to injury to earn honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors. He currently ranks third in the Pac-12 and 22nd nationally in receptions (6.78 rpg), as well as sixth in the league and 36th nationally in receiving yards (81.89 ypg). In addition, he leads the conference and ranks fifth nationally in punt returns with an average of 14.13 yards per return, while ranking 10th in the conference and 66th nationally in all-purpose yardage (109.78), and 22nd in the Pac-12 in scoring (5.33 ppg). In his final game of the 2012 season at Utah, he became Cal's all-time leader in receptions with 205 to surpass former record-holder Geoff McArthur (202, 2000-04). Through 33 games over his first three seasons at Cal with at least one catch in each one, he also has 2,570 career receiving yards to rank third all-time at the school and 17 touchdown catches to rank seventh. He is also one of only two players in Cal history to have two single seasons among the school's top-10 all-time in receptions. His 98 receptions for 1,343 yards in 2011 were both second, while his 61 receptions in 2012 ranked ninth.

9 — C.J. Anderson, TB, 5-11, 200, Sr., 1L, Vallejo, CA (Laney College/Bethel HS)

Anderson led the Bears in 2012 with 790 rushing yards on 126 carries, both career highs, while his four rushing touchdowns also tied Sofele for the team lead. Anderson's average of 65.83 rushing yards per game was 10th in the Pac-12 and 100th nationally. His 6.3 yards per rush was the fourth highest among the conference's top 12 rushers. Anderson played in all 25 games possible with two starts during his two seasons at Cal from 2011-12 with 1,135 yards rushing on 198 carries for an average of 5.7 yards per rush. He scored 12 touchdowns on the ground and two more on receptions among his 22 career catches for 350 yards to give him 84 career points on 14 TDs.

2 — Marc Anthony, DB, 6-0, 200, Sr., 3L, Chandler, AZ (Chandler HS)

Anthony recorded career highs of 52 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss (-18 yards) over 11 games and 10 starts in 2012, while adding a career-high-tying two interceptions that he returned for a career-high 64 yards and the lone score of his career. He also added one of his two career forced fumbles, three pass breakups and five passes defended. Anthony finished his Cal career with 138 tackles, five interceptions that he returned for 96 yards and one touchdown, 21 pass breakups, 26 passes defended and 13.0 tackles for loss (-28 yards) over 41 games and 32 starts.

41 — Todd Barr, DL, 6-3, 275, RFr., RS, Lakewood, CA (Lakewood HS)

Barr completed the 2012 season with 12 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss (-20 yards), 2.0 sacks (-11 yards), a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry in 11 games all off the bench.

8 — Michael Barton, LB, 6-1, 220, Fr., HS, Concord, CA (De La Salle HS)

Barton redshirted in 2012 while providing the Bears' offense with looks at upcoming opponents.

5 — Brendan Bigelow, TB, 5-10, 190, So., 1L, Fresno, CA (Central East HS)

Bigelow earned an honorable mention all-conference spot as a kick returner as he averaged 23.14 yards per return to rank sixth in the Pac-12 and 52nd nationally. Bigelow finished with 35 kick returns for 805 yards, which was the highest total in both categories by a Cal player since Lavelle Hawkins returned 42 kicks for 922 yards in 2007. Bigelow had 333 of his kick return yards on 15 attempts over the team's final two contests, bringing back seven for a career-high 171 yards vs. Oregon, including a season-long 57-yarder, and a career-high eight for 162 yards against Oregon State. Bigelow led the team with 1,328 all-purpose yards with an average of 111.08 yards per game to rank ninth in the Pac-12 and 62nd nationally, adding 431 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on 44 carries for an average of 9.8 yards per rush and 92 receiving yards and one touchdown on seven catches. He had a career-high 160 yards rushing and two touchdowns on only four carries at Ohio State as he became only the second Football Bowl Subdivision player in the last decade to post 150 or more yards rushing in a game on five or fewer carries. He was also the first Cal player since Jahvid Best in 2009 with three or more runs of 50-plus yards during a season on a pair of scoring jaunts at Ohio State of 81 and 59 yards, as well as a 57-yard TD rush at Utah. He has 1,839 career all-purpose yards in his first two seasons at Cal as he has returned 58 kicks for 1,280 yards and a touchdown, while adding 456 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and eight receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.

81 — Ross Bostock, WR, 6-2, 202, Sr., 1L, Sebastapol, CA (Analy HS)

Bostock did not record any stats during his 2012 senior campaign but was able to make it back on the field for the final seven games after coming back from his third knee surgery at Cal that forced him to miss the first five games. He also posted his lone career start against Oregon and appeared in 17 career games primarily on special teams and as a reserve wide receiver.

31 — Tyré Ellison, DB, 6-3, 200, Sr., 2L, San Francisco, CA (Burton HS)

Ellison saw the most extensive action of his career as a senior in 2012, playing in all 12 games off the bench primarily on special teams and as a reserve defensive back, and recording the first stats in his collegiate career other than participation with five tackles. He was a candidate for the All-State Good Works Award, the Rudy Awards and the Wuerffel Trophy. He played in 27 games off the bench during his career.

30 — Darren Ervin, TB, 5-10, 197, RFr., RS, Houston, TX (Lamar HS)

In addition to simulating the look of some of the nation's offensive players for the Bears' defense, Ervin was a key member of Cal's special teams in 2012 and contributed five tackles in 11 games played off the bench.

11 — Nick Forbes, LB, 6-1, 236, So., 1L, Frederick, MD (Governor Thomas Johnson HS)

Forbes had a breakout year in the most significant action of his career in 2012, playing in all 12 games with eight starts and finishing second on the club with 85 tackles after leading the team heading into the season finale before being passed by Hill. His 7.1 stops per game ranked 11th in the Pac-12, while he also had three of the team's nine fumble recoveries to rank tied for second in the conference with an average of 0.25 fumble recoveries per contest. He added 4.5 tackles for loss (-20 yards), 1.5 sacks (-11 yards), one interception that he returned 26 yards, three pass breakups, four passes defended, three quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and the team's lone blocked kick of the campaign.

65 — Dominic Galas, OL, 6-1, 290, Sr., 3L, Modesto, CA (Central Catholic HS)

Galas' season in 2012 was certainly one of perseverance that allowed him to play in only two games, including a start in the season finale at Oregon State. Galas suffered a torn pectoral muscle while lifting weights just prior to training camp that forced him to miss the team's first seven games. He returned to play off the bench at Stanford but then had an appendectomy on the day of the team's next contest at Utah that would force him to miss another three games before his return at Oregon State.

6 — Chris Harper, WR, 6-0, 170, Fr., HS, Encino, CA (Crespi HS)

Harper had a huge true freshman season, recording 41 catches for 544 yards and two touchdowns to rank second on the team behind Allen in all three categories. Harper was just shy of true freshman records posted by Allen (46 catches in 2010) and DeSean Jackson (601 receiving yards in 2005). He had per-game averages of 45.33 receiving yards and 3.42 receptions that ranked 18th and tied for 18th in the Pac-12, respectively. Harper played in all 12 games with starts in each of the last five and led Cal in receiving on five occasions, including four of the last five contests. Harper added a 14-yard touchdown run on his first career rush against Washington among his five yards on three carries. He was also the team's punt returner after Allen's injury, returning four punts for four yards over the final three contests. He was honored for his performance in the Big Game when he co-led the team with four catches for a team-high 82 yards.

23 — Josh Hill, DB, 5-10, 203, Sr., 3L, Houston, TX (Klein Forest HS)

Hill led the team in tackles with a career-high 87 stops in his final season at Cal to rank ninth in the Pac-12 with an average of 7.2 stops per contest and earn honorable mention all-conference honors. He also added an interception and a forced fumble, as well as nine pass breakups and 10 passes defended to rank second on the club in each of the latter two categories and tied for 13th in the conference in the latter (0.75 tflpg). Hill finished his career with 214 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss (-18 yards), 1.0 sack (-4 yards), five interceptions with 46 return yards, 24 pass breakups, 29 passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 48 games played and 32 starts. His 24 career pass breakups ranks 10th on the school's all-time list.

26 — Kameron Krebs, FB, 6-1, 235, Sr., 1L, Sunset Beach, HI (Oregon State/Mission Viejo HS/Kahuku HS)

Krebs appeared in three games off the bench on special teams in 2012 and played in a total of seven career games over two seasons. He was one of the team's leaders in community service.

2 — Daniel Lasco, TB, 6-1, 206, RFr., RS, The Woodlands, TX (The Woodlands HS)

Lasco recorded a team-high 12 special teams tackles and added a pair of forced fumbles as well as three kick returns for 42 yards. He also added 109 yards rushing and a touchdown on six carries (19.2 ypr) to rank fourth on the team in rushing, with 77 of his yards coming on a touchdown run against Southern Utah that was the team's second-longest run of the campaign.

13 — Mike Manuel, TB, 5-9, 198, Sr., 1L, Carson, CA (Golden West College/Los Alamitos HS/Carson HS)

Manuel was the team's second-leading kick returner in 2012 with 230 yards on 12 returns for a 19.2 average. He played in each of the team's first 11 games off the bench before missing the final contest.

BERKELEY - Already having cemented her stature in the prestigious annals of California softball, former Bears pitcher Jocelyn Forest will forever be a fixture in all of Golden Bear Sports with her induction to the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. Fans can purchase tickets to her induction banquet along with tickets to the Cal vs. Oregon football game at which Forest and the other inductees will be honored.

Forest led the Bears to the 2002 Women's College World Series title over Arizona just a month after the brutal murder of her sister, and has continued to give back to the program since she left Berkeley, discovering pitching prospect Nikki Owens, who is currently a sophomore hurler for Diane Ninemire.

The induction banquet will be on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Greek Orthodox Church in Oakland. Tickets are $85 each. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. and the program at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $85 each. For more information on ordering tickets, call 510-333-5927 or email info@bigCsociety.org.

She completed her senior year with a 29-12 record and a 1.11 ERA. A two-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection, she was named a second team All-American in both 2001 and '02. Forest won at least 20 games and helped Cal to the WCWS during each of her four years, finishing with 103 victories, 993.2 innings pitched and 1,203 strikeouts. In addition, she was voted the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA regional at UMass as a freshman.

The Class of 2012, which will comprise the 27th group of inductees, consists of:
•	Haley Cope - the 2000 Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and member of the 2004 USA Olympic team

Jackson, Maynard honored for big week

<p><strong>RELEASE:</strong></p>
<p><strong>BERKELEY —</strong> <strong>Kameron Jackson</strong> and<strong> Zach Maynard</strong> added to their honors Monday for their performances in Cal's 43-17 victory over No. 25 UCLA last Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Jackson was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week and is also a nominee for the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Pac-12 Player of the Week. Maynard was one of eight quarterbacks selected as Manning Award Stars of the Week and was also selected the California Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week.</p>
<p>Fans can vote for Jackson on the official Facebook page of the MACCO Bowl Las Vegas through Noon PT on Wednesday. To vote for Maynard for the Manning Award Player of the Week, go to the official Facebook page of the Allstate Sugar Bowl by Thursday at 9 a.m. PT.</p>
<p>On Sunday, Maynard was honored by the College Football Performance Awards as the organization's National Performer of the Week for all players and the National Quarterback Performer of the Week. Jackson was selected as one of the CFPA's two Defensive Back Performers of the Week nationally.</p>
<p>Maynard was responsible for a career-high five touchdowns on a special homecoming night in which a renovated Memorial Stadium was rededicated in memory of all Californians who have lost their lives in war during a halftime ceremony. Maynard tossed a career-high-tying four touchdown passes (his first non-overtime game with four TD throws) and ran for another score. He finished 25-of-30 overall for a season-high 295 yards, with an 83.3 completion percentage and 203.27 quarterback efficiency rating that were both career highs.</p>
<p>Jackson came off the bench to tie a Pac-12 single-game season high with three interceptions after replacing injured starting cornerback Marc Anthony in the first quarter. His first interception came in the Cal end zone with 0:23 seconds remaining in the first half and preserved a 16-7 Bears' lead at the break. He would add two more in the fourth quarter to seal the game. Jackson also had four tackles and Cal's lone pass breakup in the contest.</p>

Fall Baseball Roster Notes

The Cal baseball program has released its roster for fall ball, located HERE.

A few notes based on the roster: Senior outfielder Darrell Matthews, who hit .266 in 47 games last season starting in center field and left, is not on the fall roster, and is taking the semester off. He will likely be back by the time spring practice begins.

Senior outfielder Vince Bruno is still on the roster, but is not practicing after undergoing hip surgery during the offseason. He is expected to take a redshirt this season.

PREMIUM VIDEO: Campbell, Reuvekamp, Egber Take BP

The absence of the two veteran outfielders opens up some room for the youngsters, including redshirt freshman Brian Celsi, true freshman Grant Diede and true freshman Sean Peters, who have been taking first reps during the fall. Peters is a bit light in the hitting department, but has a very strong arm and can cover quite a bit of ground in right.

Another name to watch in the outfield is sweet-swinging right Devin Pearson. The 5-foot-11, 192-pounder is a pure athlete with very good speed and fantastic bat control. Every bunt he lays down is just about picture-perfect. He will definitely push for playing time.

PREMIUM VIDEO: Freshmen Take Their Cuts

Another youngster to watch is walk-on John Soteropulos. Before all is said and done, it will be difficult to keep his glove off the field. He has tremendous range at second base, good instincts and has very good footwork. He'll rush the play sometimes, but the fundamentals are there for a very solid middle infielder. He'll be competing primarily with redshirt freshman Brenden Farney, who was drafted in the 36th round by the Oakland A's coming out of Vacaville High in 2011. Farney's bat is a bit further along than Soteropulos's at the moment, and it looks like the 5-foot-9, 201-pounder has been focusing on keeping the ball low and driving it, instead of trying to hit it out of the park.

It is still a strong possibility that Cal fans may see eighth-round MLB draft pick Nick Halamandaris at one of the corner spots if he's not DH'ing. Every ball he's hit this fall has been on the screws, and he rarely gets fooled. Of course, it's very unlikely he'll see time at his natural position -- first base -- because of incumbent Devon Rodriguez, who has looked phenomenal in the fall after missing the majority of the 2012 season with a knee injury. Rodriguez has really learned how to work within the constraints of Evans Diamond, which is notoriously difficult on left-handed power hitters. During the last scrimmage, Rodriguez socked a low liner off the wall in right-center field for a stand-up double, with the ball never getting higher than about 30 feet in the air.

PREMIUM VIDEO: Vets Back to Work in BP

True freshman Mitchell Kranson has been playing a lot of third base. He is still refining his game at the hot corner, and, as the staff says, his bat plays. Though brought in initially as a catcher, he doesn't have a true position, and with stud 2013 backstop John Riley coming in next fall and Brett Cumberland the year after, it looks like Kranson could turn into this class's Allen Craig, who played all over the diamond in his career at Cal before making the Major Leagues as an outfielder/first baseman. The same thing -- that his bat plays -- was said of Craig throughout his career in Berkeley.

PREMIUM RECRUITING: In-Depth With Riley | Bears Add Cumberland to 2014 Class

Andrew Knapp will start at catcher this season, and has looked phenomenal in fall games. Every ball he's put in play has been well-struck, and in the last scrimmage, he went 4-for-5. Knapp wore No. 6 his freshman season, and 15 last season. This year, he will wear No. 5, while the former owner of that numeral -- shortstop Derek Campbell -- will switch to No. 2.

Behind Knapp this year, Cal will have two primary back-up catchers in Alex Egber and Jesse Kay, a true freshman out of San Diego (Calif.) Cathedral Catholic. Kay is a very strong defensive catcher who missed most of his senior year with the same hip surgery as Bruno underwent.

Bigelow honored twice by CFPA

RELEASE:

BERKELEY — Brendan Bigelow was named the All-Purpose Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards and was also an honorable mention CFPA Running Back Performer of the Week for his performance Saturday in Cal's 35-28 loss at No. 12 Ohio State. Bigelow rushed four times for 160 yards, including two long touchdown runs of 81 and 59 yards. Bigelow added three kick returns for 74 yards and totaled a career-high 234 all-purpose yards on seven touches.

Bigelow's 81-yard touchdown run was the longest of his career, the longest by any opposing player at Ohio Stadium ever, the longest in the Pac-12 this season, and the longest by a Cal player since Best had a 93-yard TD run at UCLA in 2009. His 234 all-purpose yards were the most by a Cal player since Jahvid Best had 311 all-purpose yards (all rushing) against Washington in 2009.

Bigelow leads the Pac-12 in 2012 for both the most rushing and total offense yards per play in a single game with his average of 40.0 in both categories against Ohio State. He also ranks second in the conference overall in kick returns, averaging 26.7 yards per return on six tries for a total of 160 yards. He is also eighth in the conference with an average of 111.7 all-purpose yards per contest.

Bigelow is second on the Cal team in rushing with 175 yards on six carries for an average of 29.2 yards per rush as well as all-purpose yards with 335 total (175 rush, 160 kick return).

Two Bears Join Team Israel

On Friday, a glut of young Jewish American minor league baseball players converged on Jupiter, Fla., to put on a jersey most never thought they'd ever wear -- one with 'ISRAEL' scrawled across the front.

Among them are two names which should be familiar to fans of the California baseball program.

Former Bears catcher Charlie Cutler -- a San Francisco native and former 14th-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals -- will play alongside former college teammate Josh Satin -- who hit .286 this season at New York Mets Triple-A affiliate Buffalo, slugging 14 home runs, driving in 60 RBI and tallying 25 doubles. Satin was drafted by the Mets in the sixth round of the same 2008 draft where Cutler was taken by St. Louis.

Israel -- consisting mainly of American Jewish minor leaguers, due to the Right of Return under Israeli law, which states that anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent is eligible for citizenship, and therefore, to play for the Israeli team -- will start play next week in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic in Jupiter, Fla., and all the games for the team from the Promised Land in that round are sold out. If Team Israel wins -- which is a distinct possibility -- it advances to the full World Baseball Classic in March.

"It's going to be epic," Cutler said via text. "First time ever. It's like a Jewish All-Star team."

Cutler was particularly taken by all of the Team Israel swag, including the official cap -- which features a silver, script capital 'I' inscribed in a stylized white Star of David on royal blue fabric.

The two former Bears last played together in 2008, when Satin was named a first-team All-American by Baseball America, first-team All-Pac-10 and a second-team All-American by Rivals.com, thanks to a .379/.500/.723 season at the plate with 18 home runs -- including one hit in his last at-bat at Evans Diamond to provide the winning margin in the 10th inning against UCLA on May 25, 2008.

Cutler hit .321 that season, with 52 hits, 38 runs, six doubles, two homers and 17 RBI.

This past season with the Altoona Curve -- the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates -- Cutler hit .296 in 55 games, scoring 25 runs, clocking seven doubles and three triples, slugging two home runs. Cutler drove in 19 runs, posted an on-base percentage of .407 and a slugging percentage of .421.

Serving as player-coaches for the Chosen Team will be former Big League all-stars Shawn Green and Gabe Kapler, who will be a part of a staff headed by manager Brad Ausmus.

Ohio State Depth Chart

Cal has officially released the two-deep for the Ohio State game, and Matt Summers-Gavin is not on it.

The veteran right tackle went down in Week One against Nevada, and has not played since due to a right knee injury. An MRI revealed an unspecified MCL issue, and since he is not on the two-deep this week, it appears to be more serious than the Bears initially let on.

Tight end Richard Rodgers was still listed as the starting tight end, despite injuring his foot and, according to a source "hearing a pop," last week against Southern Utah. Outside linebacker Chris McCain was also still listed as the starter.

As expected, true freshman tackle Freddie Tagaloa is now on the two-deep after playing one series against the Thunderbirds, and is second-string at left tackle behind Tyler Rigsbee.

At right tackle, replacing Summers-Gavin, is Bill Tyndall, followed by redshirt freshman Geoffrey Gibson, who was the second-string right guard. 6-foot-6 Matt Williams moves to take Gibson's spot behind starter Chris Adcock.

Fall baseball practice kicks off

<p>The Cal baseball team started fall practice a bit earlier than normal this year, hitting the field for the first time on Friday.</p>
<p>The Bears brought in 13 freshmen, including eight letter of intent signees, highlighted by power-hitting first baseman <strong>Nick Halamandaris</strong>. Instead of Larkspur (Calif.) Redwood righty <strong>Cal Becker</strong> -- who did not complete summer bridge and then planned on going to Miami (Fla.), but turned out to be a non-qualifier -- the Bears are bringing in sophomore right-handed junior college transfer <strong>Dylan Nelson</strong>, who pitched for Rochester of the Northwoods League this past summer. Out of the College of San Mateo, Nelson had 39 strikeouts in 32.0 innings for the Honkers this summer.</p>
<p>Becker was set to start the season at the back end of the bullpen as a late-inning live arm and then transition into a starter, and it looks like Nelson will take over that relief role, according to pitching coach <strong>Mike Neu</strong>.</p>

Big League Update

With the Major League Baseball season nearing its home stretch, the Cal baseball program currently has five former standouts currently seeing extensive action in The Show - John Baker (San Diego Padres), Brennan Boesch (Detroit Tigers), David Cooper (Toronto Blue Jays), Allen Craig (St. Louis Cardinals) and Brett Jackson (Chicago Cubs). The Bears also have former first-round pick Brandon Morrow (Toronto Blue Jays), on the disabled list, but is on the mend.

Craig, who was a do-everything infielder/outfielder for coach David Esquer from 2003-06, is still shining in 2012 after playing a huge part in the Cardinals winning the 2011 World Series. Craig, recently the cover feature in St. Louis' game program, is batting .309 with 26 doubles, 18 home runs and 62 RBI this summer. He now has a .299 career average with 48 doubles, 33 home runs and 120 RBI in three seasons with the Cardinals.

Baker (2000-02), who has come back from elbow surgery that limited him to 16 games in 2011, is now batting .244 with seven doubles and 11 RBI in 52 games for the Padres, while Boesch (2004-06) is batting .247 with 20 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs and 48 for the Tigers.

Two of the younger Bears in the Big Leagues -- former teammates David Cooper (2007-08) and Brett Jackson (2007-09) -- are making their marks in the Major Leagues. Cooper was called up in July by the Blue Jays and has flashed a hot bat, hitting .297 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI in 44 games. He helped engineer an extra-inning win Aug. 13 when he drove home the game-winning run with a single to right field in the 11th inning in a 3-2 victory over the White Sox.

Jackson made his Major League debut Aug. 5 for the Cubs and went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles versus the Dodgers. He has since hit two doubles, a triple and had his first Big League home run August 18. Both Cooper (2008) and Jackson (2009) were first round draft picks under Esquer.

Cal baseball is also represented by 18 players in the Minor Leagues, including recent standouts Tony Renda,Chadd Krist, Erik Johnson, Marcus Semien, Dixon Anderson, Matt Flemer, Danny Oh and Mitch Delfino - all members of the Bears' 2011 College World Series squad.

Another member of Cal's 2011 CWS team, junior catcher Andrew Knapp, had a fine summer playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Chatham Anglers. Knapp batted .293 with 13 doubles, eight home runs and 29 RBI in 40 games. He had led the Northwoods League in hitting in 2011, batting .500 with five home runs and 33 RBI.

Two other members of the 2013 Bears played well this summer - sophomore infielder Chris Paul for St. Cloud (Minn.) and sophomore right-handed junior college transfer Dylan Nelson for Rochester of the Northwoods League. Paul batted .271 in 42 games and led the Northwoods League with 20 doubles, along with six triples, a home run and 26 RBI. Nelson, who will be a sophomore in the spring after transferring from College of San Mateo, had 39 strikeouts in 32.0 innings for the Honkers.

The schedule for the 2013 Cal baseball team is still being finalized, but the Bears will be hosting exciting Pac-12 series versus USC, Oregon, Washington State, Arizona State and Stanford. Baseball fans should also be on the lookout for the announcement of the dates of Cal baseball's two special events - the annual Alumni Game and the second annual Fanfest.

Eleraky to play at JC

Sami Eleraky -- the 7-foot Danish center signed by the California Basketball program this summer -- did not qualify to play at a four-year university as per NCAA rules, and will instead play at Barton Junior College in Kansas for the required two years.

Eleraky chose to play so far away from his intended final destination because Barton was able to offer him a full scholarship, whereas JCs in California could not. He still intends on coming to Berkeley once his JuCo stint is finished, per a source.

Apart from Eleraky, the rest of the 2012 signing class made it through, and the Bears are "a full 15-strong" according to a source in the program.

Bears Release Hoops Schedule

RELEASE:

BERKELEY -- The California men's basketball team announced its 2012-13 schedule on Friday. The Golden Bears, under the direction of head coach Mike Montgomery, will face a challenging 31-game slate that includes 12 teams that won at least 20 games and five programs that received an NCAA Tournament bid last season.

Cal will host 16 games and one exhibition contest inside Haas Pavilion this winter, including nine Pac-12 match-ups.

The Bears will face four 2012 NCAA Tournament teams in their non-conference slate --Wisconsin, UNLV, Creighton and Harvard -- in addition to fellow conference NCAA Tournament participant, Colorado.

Creighton's 29 victories lead a strong list of 12 opponents that won at least 20 games last season that also includes Wisconsin (26), UNLV (26), Harvard (26), Stanford (26), Colorado (24), Washington (24), Oregon (24), Arizona (23), Denver (22), Oregon State (21) and UCSB (20).

The Bears will open play at Haas with an exhibition game against San Francisco State on Nov. 6. Cal will begin regular-season play with a pair of home contests against CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 11) and Pepperdine (Nov. 13).

Montgomery's squad will make its first of two trips to the state of Colorado this season for its first road game of the 2011-12 campaign as the Bears meet Denver Nov. 16.

Cal will participate in the Anaheim Classic over the Thanksgiving holiday, joining Drake, Drexel, Georgia Tech, Pacific, Rice, Saint Mary's and Xavier in the eight-team tournament. The Bears will play their first of three games in the Anaheim Classic against Drake on Nov. 22, followed by games on Nov. 23 and Nov. 25.

California opens the month of December against three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago. The Bears will travel to Madison, Wisc., to face Wisconsin - a 2012 Sweet Sixteen squad - Dec. 2 before returning home to open a five-game homestand against UNLV (Dec. 9) and defending Missouri Valley Conference champions, Creighton (Dec. 15). Home contests against UCSB (Dec. 18), Prairie View A&M (Dec. 22) and Harvard (Dec. 29) round out the calendar year.

The Bears will usher in 2013 and the Pac-12 slate down in Los Angeles with games against UCLA (Jan. 3) and USC (Jan. 5).

The first of two Bay Area battles against Stanford will be inside Maples Pavilion on Jan. 19, while the Bears host the Cardinal on Senior Day inside Haas Pavilion in the regular-season finale on March 6.

Cal will also host Washington (Jan. 9), Washington State (Jan. 12), Oregon State (Jan. 31), Oregon (Feb. 2), UCLA (Feb. 14), USC (Feb. 17), Utah (Feb. 28) and Colorado (March 2) at Haas Pavilion in league action.

Along with its game at Stanford, the Bears will travel to Utah (Jan. 24), Colorado (Jan. 27), Arizona State (Feb. 7), Arizona (Feb. 10), Oregon (Feb. 21) and Oregon State (Feb. 23) as part of its conference slate.

During conference regular-season play, the Bears will deviate from the traditional Thursday/Saturday league format on five occasions with three Sunday games (Jan. 27 at Colorado, Feb. 10 at Arizona, and Feb. 17 vs. USC) and a pair of Wednesday contests (Jan. 9 vs. Washington and March 6 vs. Stanford).

The Pac-12 Conference Tournament moves to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in 2013. First-round games begin March 13 with the championship game set for March 16.

Game times and broadcast information will be announced at a later date.

Allen Hauls in Another Honor

RELEASE:

BERKELEY — Cal junior wide receiver Keenan Allen added again to his long list of preseason honors on Thursday, when he was named a season-team preseason All-American by Sports Illustrated. Allen has been Cal's most decorated player prior to the 2012 season.

Allen has earned nearly unanimous preseason All-American accolades and is on several national watch lists including the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year given annually to the nation's top college football player of the year; the Biletnikoff Award for the best receiver; and the Paul Hornung Award for the most versatile player.

Allen caught 98 passes for 1,343 receiving yards and six touchdown catches in 2011, with the receptions and receiving yards both ranking second on Cal's all-time single season lists behind school record holders Dameane Douglas (100 receptions in 1998) and Geoff McArthur (1,504 receiving yards in 2003). He returns the fourth-highest per-game averages from 2011 of all active Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players for both receptions (7.54) and receiving yards (103.31).

Allen has career totals of 144 receptions, 1,833 receiving yards and 11 touchdown catches in two seasons at Cal. His 144 career receptions are only 58 shy of all-time school leader McArthur's career total of 202 from 2000-04, while he will start the 2012 season 1,355 receiving yards short of McArthur's career total of 3,188.

Jackson becomes 10th Cal MLBer this season

On Sunday night, the California baseball program saw its 10th player this season play at the Major League level.

2009 first-round draft pick Brett Jackson took his place alongside Allen Craig (St. Louis Cardinals), Josh Satin (New York Mets), Tyson Ross (Oakland A's), Brandon Morrow (Toronto Blue Jays), Brennan Boesch (Detroit Tigers), Geoff Blum (Arizona Diamondbacks), Xavier Nady (Washington Nationals), David Cooper (Toronto) and John Baker (San Diego Padres), who have all played in the bigs this season.

[COLUMN: Big Leaguers Sound Off on Cancellation of Cal Baseball]

Jackson went 2-for-4 with two singles and a walk in a 7-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The fourth-highest overall draft pick in school history hit .303 in 152 games over three seasons in Berkeley, scoring 91 runs, knocking in 85, tallying 25 doubles, 11 triples and 12 homers with 27 stolen bases. In two of his three seasons, Jackson stole at least 11 bases.

[RELATED: Former Teammates Square Off in Oakland]

Jackson became the 50th player in the 120-year history of the program to reach the bigs.

The Boys in Blue have a former Bear of their own waiting in the wings in the person of outfielder Blake Smith. Smith is currently hitting .266 at Double-A Chattanooga with 22 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs.

The Cubs recently drafted two-time All-Pac-10 Cal catcher Chadd Krist in the First-Year Player Draft in June.

Krist lit up short-season Single-A Boise with a .328 batting average in 16 games, and was promptly promoted to Single-A Peoria, where he's hit .303 in 18 games with two home runs and 12 RBI.

Krist -- one of two Bears taken on the first day of the draft -- was part of a six-man 2012 draft class which included second-round pick Tony Renda. Renda -- currently hitting .222 for the Single-A Short Season Auburn Doubledays -- was picked up by the Washington Nationals with the 80th pick.

Renda is one of two former Cal players currently in the Nats' system, along with former teammate Dixon Anderson -- a ninth-round pick in 2011. The big righty has thrown 10.0 innings over four games, including three starts, and has allowed seven hits and no runs while striking out five.

In other minor league news, former Bears closer Matt Gorgen has been moved up to Triple-A Reno in the Diamondbacks' system, and has posted a 3.27 ERA in eight relief appearances, walking three and striking out six.

Satin -- who had a cup of coffee last year and in 2012 -- is hitting .296 with Triple-A Buffalo.

At the big league level, Craig leads the Cal contingent. After making the World Series-winning catch in 2011, Craig has come back to post a .295 batting average with a career-high 15 homers, 56 RBI and 48 runs in 67 games for the Cardinals.

[LISTEN: Craig Joins the Bear Republic Podcast | Cards Outfielder Talks Reinstatement]

A day ago, Cooper hit the game-tying homer in the ninth inning against the Athletics in an eventual 3-1 11th-inning win for the Blue Jays. In 31 games this season, Cooper -- who socked 17 homers for the Bears in 2008 -- is hitting .291 with six doubles, three longballs and seven RBI. In 27 games in 2011, Cooper hit .211 with two circuit shots and 12 RBI while striking out 14 times to seven walks.

Cooper's teammate Morrow -- a top-five selection of the Seattle Mariners in 2006 -- is having the finest season of his big league career, posting a 3.01 ERA in 77.2 innings of work, holding opposing batters to a .194 average in his 13 starts. Morrow is currently 7-4 with 67 strikeouts to just 24 walks.

Boesch has started much of the year in the Detroit outfield, but has not yet been able to replicate the success of his .320 rookie season in 2010. In 2012, Boesch is hitting .251 with 11 homers with 46 RBI.

Robertson officially added to staff

RELEASE:

BERKELEY -- Theo Robertson, who was a standout forward for the California men's basketball team from 2005-10, re-joins the Golden Bears' program as a graduate manager, head coach Mike Montgomery announced Friday.

"I am extremely grateful to coach Montgomery and the University of California for allowing me the opportunity to join the basketball staff as a graduate manager," Robertson said. "I'm thrilled to be able to continue to represent this great institution, while contributing towards the success of our student-athletes both on and off the court."

Robertson starred for Cal from the 2005-06 season through the 2009-10 campaign where he was a two-year captain and voted the team's Most Valuable Player as a senior on the Golden Bears' 2010 conference championship squad. Robertson completed his career with 1,315 career points, good for 16th on the program's all-time scoring list. He is Cal's all-time leader in career three-point field goal percentage at .440 (154-of-350) and is among the school's career leaders in three-point field goals made (seventh), three-point field goals attempted (10th) and games played (seventh with 125). The forward, who was a second-team All-Pac-10 selection as a senior, was limited by injury during his career in Berkeley where he underwent three separate hip surgeries and was forced to miss the entire 2007-08 season.

Robertson completed his undergraduate bachelor of arts degree in social welfare in 2010 with a 3.10 cumulative grade point average. While training for the NBA draft, he suffered his third hip injury that required immediate surgery.

In his new role, the former student-athlete will assist with all facets of the program from a competition and academic standpoint, while working towards his master's degree at Cal.

"Theo is an exceptional basketball player who has a great knowledge of the game," Montgomery said. "His addition to the staff will greatly help our program as he works toward completing his master's degree. Theo enjoyed great success as a player here and he will help us create more great moments this season."

Robertson served as an administrative fellow with the Pac-12 Conference this past year, where he assisted with the league's Sports Management and Championships team. The position is designed to help prepare former student-athletes transition to the profession of sports administration.

Robertson will be a candidate for his master's degree in cultural studies of sport in the Graduate School of Education.

Halamandaris Coming to Cal

California head coach David Esquer has confirmed to BearTerritory.net that 6-foot-2, 215-pound left-handed hitting first baseman Nick Halamandaris will not be signing with the Seattle Mariners, an hour after the deadline to sign players selected in June's First-Year Major League Player Draft.

Esquer confirmed a tweet sent earlier by Baseball America's Jim Callis:

#Mariners did not sign 8th-rder Nick Halamandaris. #mlbdraft

— Jim Callis (@jimcallisBA) July 13, 2012

Halamandaris pounded 17 home runs over four years with Monterey (Calif.) Stevenson. As a sophomore and a junior, Halamandaris was selected to the Monterey County Herald's All-County baseball team. He was also 2011 first-team Mission Trial Athletic League and finished his junior year with 38 hits, 11 multi-hit games, nine doubles, a triple, four home runs and 29 RBI.

Halamandaris completes a trifecta of lefty power for the 2013 team, including returning first baseman Devon Rodriguez and half of switch-hitter Andrew Knapp. This is a huge boon to the Cal baseball program. It's not often a kid will turn down up to $500k and a top-10-round selection to go to school, though we saw Mark Appel announce today that he'll be back after being picked in the top 10 picks of the first round. Appel, it must be noted, was a Scott Boras advisee.

AD Post" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/california/blog/goldenbears/post/jay-john-named-asst-ad?urn=college,wp421" target="_blank">another move to shake up his coaching staff, California basketball head coach Mike Montgomery has promoted Travis DeCuire -- who has served as an assistant men's basketball coach for the Golden Bears the past four seasons -- to associate head coach.

"Travis has played a vital role in our team's success both as a coach on the court and in recruiting in our four years here at Cal," Montgomery said. "He is an excellent coach who impacts all facets of our program, warranting this promotion. Travis continues to expand his responsibilities as a coach and has distinguished himself as one of the top mentors in the game. This appointment is well deserved and will enhance the development of our student-athletes."

A part of Montgomery's coaching staff since his arrival in Berkeley prior to the 2008-09 season, DeCuire has helped guide the Bears to 88 victories and a Pac-12 title over the past four seasons. A top-flight recruiter, DeCuire has also helped develop several all-conference standouts, including the 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year Jerome Randle, the 2011 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Allen Crabbe, and the 2012 Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Jorge Gutierrez. The Bears have reached the postseason all four years with DeCuire on staff.

"I am extremely grateful to Coach Montgomery and Sandy Barbour for their confidence in me," DeCuire said. "We have an amazing staff and the best support system in college basketball. Together with the help of the Cal community, we will continue our pursuit of a championship on the court and the ultimate success of our student-athletes off of it. The opportunity to grow both as a coach and a mentor wouldn't be possible without the hard work and dedication of all the student-athletes who I've had the great pleasure of working with in my four years at Berkeley."

DeCuire arrived at Cal along with Montgomery in the spring of 2008, following five years as an assistant coach at Old Dominion, where he helped lead the Monarchs to a 117-53 combined record and four postseason berths in his final four seasons with the program.

He previously served as a head coach at Green River Community College in Seattle and at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.

DeCuire graduated Montana in 1994 with a degree in business marketing, and was a standout point guard for the Grizzlies from 1991-94. He was a two-time Most Valuable Player and All-Big Sky Conference honoree. He began his coaching career as a player-coach for the Sutherland Basketball Club in Sutherland, Australia, in 1994-95.

DeCuire's new appointment completes Montgomery's staff, along with Assistant Athletic Director for Basketball Development Jay John, and assistant coaches John Montgomery and Gregg Gottlieb, for the 2012-13 season.

Allen Racks Up Honors

<p><em>Athlon Sports</em> named junior Cal wide receiver <strong>Keenan Allen</strong> a second-team preseason All-American on Monday.</p>
<p>The only wide outs ahead of Allen are Clemson's <strong>Sammy Watkins</strong> and conference foe <strong>Robert Woods</strong> of USC.</p>
<p>Last season, Woods had 13 more catches (111-98) than Allen while the junior out of Greensboro, NC had more receiving yards (1,343-1,292). Woods caught 15 scoring strikes to Allen's six. Allen's season-long reception went for eight more yards more than Woods' (90-82), but overall, Woods averaged 107.7 receiving yards per game to Allen's 103.3.</p>
<p>The two will square off on Sept. 22 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.</p>
<p>The honor is just the latest in a string of preseason plaudits for Allen, who was also named a First Team All-Pac-12 selection along with Woods. Senior tailback back <strong>Isi Sofele </strong>(second team), senior offensive tackle <strong>Matt Summers-Gavin</strong> (second team), defensive lineman <strong>Deandre Coleman</strong> (third team) and linebacker <strong>Chris McCain</strong> (third team) joined Allen among the Bears' contingent on the publication's all-conference squad.</p>
<p>Allen was recently named to the Maxwell Award watch list along with Sofele, and both are on the College Football Performance Offensive watch list.</p>

McClure Update

A source in the Cal football program said that defensive back Stefan McClure "might redshirt this year."

With the kind of injury McClure sustained toward the end of last season -- tearing three constituent parts in the knee -- 10 years ago, was a career-ender. He had another surgery about a month and a half or two months ago, because the swelling wasn't going down, but he "looks great," now.

McClure is at 200 pounds, he's a focused kid and the injury doesn't bother him psychologically, so once it heals, he'll be ready to go, but he's just not there. The musculature around the knee and overall conditioning are superb, but there comes a point where it's just biology. He needs time to heal a very traumatic injury. His body has completely changed, he's ripped, and all of this without one leg, basically.

McClure has maintained a very positive attitude. At this point, it's just a matter of time and letting the actual constituent parts heal. Don't count on him practicing during fall camp, but once the healing is done, he'll be ready to go very quickly.

Allen, Bigelow named to watch list

Two of the California football team's top athletes -- Keenan Allen and Brendan Bigelow -- have been announced as members of the College Football Performance Awards' Special Teams watch list.

Allen's 98 catches and 1,343 receiving yards both rank second all-time on the program's single-season rolls, behind Demeane Douglas (100 catches in 1998) and Geoff McArthur (1,504 yards in 2003).

After spring football, during which Allen did not participate due to ankle surgery, Allen was named the team's starting punt returner, thanks to his plus vision and overall athleticism.

Bigelow will enter 2012 as a true sophomore, and played in each of the team's last 11 games off the bench as a true freshman. The tailback out of Fresno (Calif.) Central East led the team with 23 kick returns for 475 kick return yards and a 20.7 average.

Bigelow took back the program's first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2007 when he brought back the opening kick of the second half against Presbyterian for an 88-yard score.

That play -- along with his 111 kick-return yards on two take-backs -- earned Bigelow a Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week nod and the CFPA's Kickoff Returner Performer of the Week honors. His kickoff return for a touchdown was one of only eight by
Pac-12 players in 2011.

Jay John Named Asst. AD

CAL RELEASE - Jay John, who recently completed his fourth season as an assistant coach on the California men's basketball staff, will move into a new role as Assistant Athletic Director for Basketball Development, Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour announced on Friday.

"I am thrilled that Jay is transitioning into this new position," Barbour said. "We share the same strategic vision for the program and he will be a tremendous asset to the staff as a steward to help build a comprehensive plan for program advancement. Jay's extensive basketball expertise will serve as a valuable resource and a strong conduit to the program's stakeholders."

John, who has served as a coach for the past 29 years, will transition into this new position and oversee the basketball program's operations. He will also help enhance Cal's presence with alumni, promote Cal basketball's rich tradition and work with the administration on enhancing the program's development efforts.

"I am very excited for a promotion to this new role as Assistant Director of Athletics for Basketball Development," John said. "My 29 years as a college basketball coach has provided me with a significant background to launch this transition into administration. There is great enthusiasm within this athletic department under Sandy Barbour's direction and this new role provides me with an enhanced opportunity to make an impact from a department-wide level as the Cal brand continues to grow."

The Bears posted an 88-47 record and captured the 2010 Pac-10 Championship with John as an assistant coach on Mike Montgomery's staff the past four seasons.

"Jay has been an extraordinary asset to our staff as an exceptional coach and recruiter these past four years and he will continue to have a monumental impact on this program," Montgomery said. "We share the same enthusiasm for Cal and I am excited that he will help lead us in developing a winning program inside and outside of the gym."

During John's nearly three decades on the sidelines, he served as the head coach at Oregon State and worked as an assistant at Arizona, Oregon, Butler and San Francisco, in addition to Cal, at the Division I level. He has helped guide each program to the postseason during his tenure as a coach.

"My career as a basketball coach is something that I am very proud of and it has been an honor to work with some of the great coaches in the game," John said. "I enter this role with the same passion as I did as a mentor on the sideline. While I will surely miss the time I spent with the many great student-athletes I have had an opportunity to coach during my career, this newly-created position has been a goal of mine for some time and I am happy to see it come to fruition. It will allow me to further cultivate the basketball community and help enhance the great tradition here at Cal."

At Oregon State from 2002-08, he directed the Beavers to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament, compiling a 17-15 mark, for the program's first postseason berth and winning record in 15 years. He won 66 games during his first five seasons in Corvallis, the most for an OSU coach in a five-year stretch since 1988-93.

John spent four years under Lute Olson at Arizona where he was part of the Wildcats' appearance in the 2001 national championship game. He also coached at Jamestown Community College in New York and entered the coaching ranks at his alma mater, Salpointe Cathlolic High School in Tucson, Ariz.

Bears Add to 2013 Baseball Class

The California baseball team has just added its fourth commitment of the 2013 class in Concord (Calif.) De La Salle right-handed pitcher Andrew Buckley, who represents the third Spartan to change the green and silver for the blue and gold over the 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes.

Buckley won the North Coast Section Division I title by pitching a complete game in the O.co Coliseum, alongside current De La Salle teammates and fellow future Bears in 2012 catcher Mitchell Kranson and 2012 outfielder Sean Peters. Kranson was recently named the MVP of the East Bay Athletic League, and fellow 2012 signee Max Dutto was named to the first team. Peters earned second-team honors.

Both Peters and Buckley visited Berkeley on Friday, April 13 for the Bears' 7-6 win over Washington.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Buckley pulled the trigger on Sunday, and will come to Berkeley armed with an 87-90 mph fastball with a solid slider. Buckley is an intense competitor and athlete, who also plays wide receiver for the Spartans on the gridiron.

This season for the football team, Buckley caught 18 passes for 364 yards and one touchdown, punted the ball four times for 147 yards with a long of 49 and made seven total tackles on defense. He also completed a 58-yard touchdown pass.

On the hill, Buckley went 5-2 with one save in 13 appearances with two complete games. Buckley struck out 53 and walked 21 in 49.0 innings of work with a sparkling 1.71 ERA and a .187 batting average against.

Buckley will join top-flight Vacaville (Calif.) Will C. Wood hurler Trevin Haseltine as the two pitchers so far in the class, to go along with Moraga (Calif.) Campolindo shortstop Robbie Tenerowicz and Cal legacy Aaron Knapp, who joins the program of his brother Andrew and father Mike as a 5-foot-10, 170-pound strong-armed outfielder.

The Bears are far from done with the 2013 class, and are currently still working to flip Kevin Flemer, the younger brother of 2012 ace and 2011 all-conference closer Matt Flemer, a 26th-round selection of the Colorado Rockies. The younger Flemer is still committed to Oregon State, but it's a long way until he signs his letter of intent.

Halamandaris Update

Cal baseball signee Nick Halamandaris, the school career record holder at Monterey (Calif.) Robert Lewis Stevenson, met with head coach David Esquer on Wednesday to discuss whether he'll come to Berkeley as planned or take the Seattle Mariners up on their eighth-round draft selection of the big power-hitting first baseman.

Halamandaris has yet to hear from the Mariners as of now, and him coming to Berkeley will likely be contingent upon his signing bonus. Since he was taken before the 10th round, the signing bonus is not restricted to $100k or lower, so if he runs into some big money, it might be tough to turn down.

If he does come and play for the Bears, the 6-foot-2, 220-pounder would likely be the heir-apparent to Devon Rodriguez at first base.

Post-Draft Ripples

The 2012 Major League First-Year Player Draft has concluded, and seven Cal baseball players have been selected by big league clubs:

Tony Renda: 80th overall, 2nd round, Washington Nationals
Chadd Krist: 284th overall, 9th round, Chicago Cubs
Mitch Delfino: 628th overall, 20th round, San Francisco Giants
Justin Jones: 790th overall, 26th round, Minnesota Twins
Matt Flemer: 828th overall, 26th round, Colorado Rockies
Danny Oh: 847th overall, 27th round, New York Yankees
Joey Donofrio: 960th overall, 31st round, St. Louis Cardinals

Of the three juniors selected -- Renda, Delfino and Jones -- two are very likely to return. Renda will sign his contract on Friday after a Thursday appearance on the Bear Republic Podcast, so he's gone, but the key here will be Jones and Delfino.

Delfino had a 15th-round cutoff, but being drafted by the hometown Giants may play into him possibly leaving.

A source within the program has said that Jones is definitely returning, which will make the Bears pitching staff very, very deep.

Jones's return will put him immediately into the Friday-night slot in the pitching rotation, and he will likely be followed by big righty Logan Scott and junior lefty Kyle Porter, who struggled through injury as a sophomore and only logged 20.1 innings after a Freshman All-American season.

That will likely move junior lefty Michael Theofanopoulos into a weekday role, along with soft-tossing sophomore lefty Chris Muse-Fisher and sophomore control specialist Keaton Siomkin, not to mention incoming power pitcher Cal Becker and 6-foot-6 righty Ryan Mason. Becker could also slot into Porter's former role as a late-inning reliever, getting him ready for a starting role as a sophomore. Young staff? Yes. Talented? You bet.

If Delfino does indeed return, he will add a heap of power to the lineup, particularly at the corners. The power tandem of Delfino and first baseman Devon Rodriguez -- who missed the season with a freak knee injury -- will anchor the middle of the lineup, and provide a veteran presence on the infield.

Cal committed a conference-worst 97 errors this season, and Delfino himself booted 17 balls -- more than his career total of 11 heading into 2012. With a healthy arm and another summer of wooden-bat league experience, Delfino should rebound to be a stabilizing force at the hot corner.

The draft may also change the Bears' recruiting class, but only a bit. Powerful first baseman and corner outfielder Nick Halamandaris out of Monterey (Calif.) Robert Lewis Stevenson was chosen 251st overall in the eighth round by the Seattle Mariners.

Also a tight end on his high school's football team, Halamandaris has been named to Monterey County Herald's All-County baseball team the last two years. He was also 2011 first-team Mission Trial Athletic League and finished last season with 38 hits, 11 multi-hit games, nine doubles, a triple, four home runs and 29 RBI.

Halamandaris has yet to respond to queries about his future, but BearTerritory.net will have the latest as soon as it's available.

Projected Lineup:
CF SR Darrell Matthews (L)
DH JR Mike Reuvekamp (R)
1B SR Devon Rodriguez (L)
C JR Andrew Knapp (S)
3B SR Mitch Delfino (R)
LF SO Chris Paul (R)
RF SR Vince Bruno (L)
2B SO Brenden Farney (L)
SS JR Derek Campbell (R)

Cal Inducts Six Into Hall, Honors Gordon

The University of California athletic department has announced that Lamond Murray, an All-American forward who scored nearly 1,700 points during his collegiate basketball career, and Jocelyn Forest, who pitched the Golden Bears to the 2002 NCAA softball championship, will headline a class of six new members that will be inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of

Fame. In addition, former Cal pitcher Stu Gordon will receive the Hall of Fame Service Award, becoming just the third winner of that particular honor.

Formal induction ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9, at the annual Hall of Fame banquet at the Greek Orthodox Church Conference Center in Oakland. The new inductees will also be honored at halftime of Cal's Nov. 10 football game vs. Oregon at the newly-remodeled California Memorial Stadium.

The 27th Cal Athletic Hall of Fame class will also include 2000 Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and member of the 2004 US Olympic Team, Haley Cope.

An All-American each of her four years in Berkeley (1998-2001), Cope was named the 2000 Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year when she was part of three conference-winning relay teams. She also captured NCAA championships as a member of Cal's 200 free and 200 medley relays in 2000. The following year, Cope won the 50 and 100 free and swam on the victorious 200 free relay at the Pac-10 meet. At the 2004 USA Olympics in Athens, she won a silver medal with the U.S. 400 medley relay team and reached the final in the 100 backstroke, adding an additional seven medals over her career at the World Championships. Cope was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic choice and received Cal's Most Improved Swimmer Award as a freshman and Coaches' Award as a senior.

Forest is perhaps best remembered for pitching the Cal softball team to its first national title as a senior in 2002 following the brutal murder of her sister.

One of the top softball pitchers in school history, Forest led the Bears to the 2002 NCAA championship -- the first NCAA women's team title ever at Cal. She was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after posting a 4-0 record with a 0.50 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 28.0 innings of work at the Women's College World Series.

The next member of the hall of fame class is former Cal baseball player Mike Harrison, an All-American catcher for the Bears who hit 40 home runs during his career in Berkeley.

Harrison was a standout catcher for Cal, earning All-Pac-10 and All-America honors in 1990. He earned the 1990 Clint Evans Award as the team's Most Valuable Player after batting .341 with 21 home runs and 63 RBI. In 1991, he helped lead Cal to the NCAA Midwest Regional championship game in Wichita, Kan., with a game-winning home run in the ninth inning versus Ohio State. Harrison continues to rank among Cal's all-time leaders in both home runs (40) and RBI (156).

Bruce Kennedy will get the call to the hall after a sparkling career for the Cal men's track and field team from 1970-73.

An All-American in the javelin when he was the NCAA runner-up in 1973,

Kennedy remains one of the top javelin throwers in school history. He set a school record with an effort of 267-4 as a senior and represented the United States internationally four times, including at the 1977 Pan Pacific Games. Kennedy placed eighth in the javelin at the 1971 NCAA Championships and captured a Pac-8 title in 1972. He was ranked among the top 10 in the United States from 1978-82, including as high as No. 2 in both 1980 and '81, and won U.S. championships in both 1977 and '81. A native of Rhodesia, Kennedy earned a spot on the country's 1972 and '76 Olympic teams, but was unable to participate because Rhodesia was not invited to the Games due to its practice of apartheid at the time. After becoming a U.S. citizen, Kennedy made his third Olympic team in 1980. However, the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games prevented him from participating in the Olympics once again.

Murray joins the Hall as a two-time All-Pac-10 forward who netted 1,688 points during his career, cementing his legacy as one of the most prolific scorers in school history.

Murray left Cal after his junior year for the NBA with the No. 1 spot on the Bears' all-time list with 1,688 points (now fourth). He was named a second-team All-American in 1994 by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. After averaging 24.7 ppg in three NCAA Tournament games in 1993, the 6-7 forward paced the Pac-10 his junior season with 24.3 ppg and a school-record 729 points. He was named the team's co-MVP in both 1993 and 1994 (sharing the honor with Jason Kidd). His '92-93 club posted a 21-9 record and advanced to the NCAA's Sweet 16 with wins over LSU (66-64) and Duke (82-77). Murray reeled off 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks vs. LSU and added 28 points and 10 boards vs. Duke. Murray scored a career-high 38 points in his final regular-season game at Washington State -- the fifth 30-point game of his career. He had a least 20 points in eight consecutive games during one stretch and reached the 20-point barrier a total of 46 times. The Los Angeles Clippers picked Murray with the seventh selection of the 1994 NBA Draft, and he played 11 seasons in the league with the Clippers, Cleveland, Toronto and New Jersey, averaging 11.3 ppg.

Anne Walker enters the ranks representing Women's Golf, after she helped the Bears earn their first NCAA regional appearance in 2000 and the program's first NCAA Championship appearance in 2001. She earned All-Pac-10 recognition three times, including second-team honors as a senior, and won two tournaments during her career -- the BYU Invitational in the fall of 1998 and the 2002 Bay Area Classic. A three-time NGCA

All-American Scholar-Athlete and a three-time first-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection, Walker served a team captain for three seasons. In 2002, she received the Pac-10 Medal as Cal's top senior female student-athlete. Following graduation, Walker served as an assistant coach at Cal from 2003-08, helping the Bears to three top-five finishes, and she just completed her fourth season as head women's golf coach at UC Davis.

The final honoree will be Gordon, who will receive the Hall of Fame Service Award for his longtime commitment to Cal Athletics and valued leadership to raise funds necessary for the reinstatement of the Golden Bear baseball program in 2011. A pitcher for the Bears who lettered in 1961 and '62, Gordon posted a 7-0 record on the mound as a junior. He was also a member of the Cal freshman basketball and baseball squads in 1958-59. In 1971, Gordon helped found the Bear Backers organization, which has raised millions of dollars for Cal Athletics over the ensuing 41 years. He is a two-time recipient of the Carl Van Heuit Cal Baseball Alumnus of the Year Award and the Cal baseball team's Excellence in Leadership Award is named in his honor. In addition, he is a member of the athletic department's Director's Advisory Board. On the university level, Gordon collected the Citation Award from the Boalt Hall Alumni Association in 2009 and this past year received the Chancellor's Citation for Leadership and Contributions to Cal.

Gordon is the third person to earn the Hall of Fame Service Award honor, following Frank Brunk in 2009 and Jill Costello in 2011. The award recognizes a former student-athlete, coach, administrator or friend of Cal Athletics who has made an outstanding long-term contribution to ideals of the athletic department and commitment to the four pillars of its mission -- to teach, serve, compete and excel. The award is presented to an individual for demonstrating exemplary leadership and setting a standard for excellence in enhancing the student-athlete experience at the University of California.

With the addition of the new members, the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame now features 256 individuals and six rowing teams. The school's Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 1986.

Arioto Named POY Finalist

<p>California softball player Valerie Arioto -- the Pac-12 Player of the Year -- has been named one of three finalists for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association of American and USA Softball on Wednesday.</p>
<p>College softball's top honor will go to either Arioto, Arizona State's Katelyn Boyd or Oklahoma's Keilani Ricketts. No matter which player takes home the hardware, it will be the first time a player from their respective schools has done so.</p>
<p>Arioto is currently 11th in the nation with a 1.32 ERA, third with a .968 slugging percentage and second with a .641 on-base percentage. Her school-record-setting 22 home runs rank sixth in the country, and she's scoured 64 runs -- fourth-most in the nation. Arioto leads the NCAA in walks with 87 free passes -- 26 more than second place.</p>
<p>Arioto was the only two-time winner of the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week award this season, and will lead the consensus No. 1 overall Bears into a Super Regional match-up this weekend at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley against a familiar Pac-12 foe in No. 18 Washington. If Cal wins out against the Huskies, the Bears will advance to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City from May 31-June 6, where the winner of the Player of the Year award will be announced on May 29 in an athlete-only banquet.</p>
<p>Cal takes on Washington in Game One of the Super Regional at 7 PM on Saturday, May 26, and on Sunday, May 27 at 4 PM, with a third game at 6:30 PM if necessary.</p>
<p>The Bears swept the Huskies in Berkeley during their regular-season three-game conference series on March 30 and April 1, appropriately enough, playing three games in two days -- the same format as the Super Regional.</p>

Baseball Projections: 2013

Although the 2012 season is not yet finished, with six conference games to go for the Cal baseball team, it's about time to make some way-too-early predictions about what next year's team could look like.

First impressions: Young, but deep, with a lot of promising talent but not a lot of veteran presence.

Head coach David Esquer has said that after last year's cancellation/reinstatement drama, it will take the Bears three years to "get back to square one." 2013 will be Year Two.

Key Losses:
RHP Matt Flemer (Draft, graduation)
LHP Justin Jones (Draft)
2B Tony Renda (Draft)
C Chadd Krist (Draft, graduation)
IF Mitch Delfino (Draft*, graduation)
CF Chad Bunting (Draft, graduation)
OF Danny Oh (graduation)
RHP Stephen Pistoresi (graduation)
RHP Joey Donofrio (graduation)

* = If Delfino gets drafted anywhere after the 17th round, I wouldn't be surprised if he came back, thereby adding a proven veteran bat, but making the infield situation a bit more crowded. It would be a very good problem to have.

Losing Renda is a foregone conclusion, and it will really sting. There is no way around that reality. There is no one in the program who can hit like him, and in fact, very few players in college baseball who can, for that matter. The good thing is that incoming freshman Mitchell Kranson has Renda's work ethic. The question will be if he can develop into that kind of complete hitter.

Losing Krist and Flemer hurt almost as much. Krist has been a rock behind home plate for three years, and because of that, Knapp hasn't gotten much time to practice his craft in game situations. As a hitter, though, Knapp is a slight upgrade, if he stays within himself and doesn't try to do too much. Flemer is, along with Renda, the heart and soul of this team. His fire and competitive drive will be sorely missed, as will his rubber arm and control. Luckily, there are two youngsters coming in who can throw harder and provide real power arms in his stead, but they'll be fresh out of high school.

Projected Lineup:
CF SR Darrell Matthews (L)
DH JR Mike Reuvekamp (R)
1B SR Devon Rodriguez (L)
C JR Andrew Knapp (S)
3B SO Chris Paul (R)
LF RSF Brian Celsi (R)
RF SR Vince Bruno (L)
2B SO Brenden Farney (L)
SS JR Derek Campbell (R)

Projected Weekend Rotation:
LHP JR Kyle Porter
RHP SR Logan Scott
LHP JR Michael Theofanopoulos

Weekday Starter Candidates:
LHP SO Chris Muse-Fisher
RHP SO Keaton Siomkin
RHP Fr Cal Becker
RHP Fr Ryan Mason

Projected Depth:
C: Knapp, Alex Egber, incoming FR Mitchell Kranson (Kranson is the heir apparent at the position)
1B: Rodriguez, Jacob Wark, incoming FR Nick Halamandaris
2B: Farney, Reuvekamp, incoming FR Max Dutto
SS: Campbell, Paul, Reuvekamp, Dutto
3B: Paul, Campbell, Kranson
RF: Bruno, incoming FR Grant Diede, Halamandaris
CF: Matthews, Brian Celsi, Diede
LF: Celsi, Diede, Halamandaris, Paul, Knapp
DH: Reuvekamp, Bruno, Wark, Kranson

Bullpen:
Long Relief -- RHP RSFr Michael Jordan, LHP RSFr Robb Woodcock, Becker, Mason, Siomkin, Muse-Fisher
Middle Relief -- RHP JR Ryan Sandler, RHP SO Eric Walbridge, LHP Fr Jake Schultz, RHP Fr Jordan Talbot
Late-Game -- RHP JR Michael Lowden, LHP JR Matt Evanoff, RHP Ryan Wertenberger (Expect Lowden and Wertenberger to compete for the closer job)

Commentary:
Celsi is a spark plug with a strong arm and a good bat for contact. Wouldn't expect much power from him, but he could run into some doubles. Diede is a tremendous athlete, as is Halamandaris, and that alone might get them at-bats and time in the field, especially with the losses of Oh and Bunting.

The infield situation, apart from Rodriguez, will be fluid, particularly if Delfino returns. If Campbell's fielding at short doesn't improve -- he got no help in the summer wood-bat leagues, where he played mostly outfield -- he can slide over to third Paul and Farney would slide into the middle. As of now, Farney looks to be the superior shortstop, and Paul wouldn't be at-home at second, and it would be a waste of his arm. Halamandaris appears to be the type of player who could be the heir apparent at first, and he's got a lot of pop.

Becker and Mason could compete for starting slots right away. Both are power arms, but need to fine-tune their control and improve their secondary pitches. At this point, it looks like Woodcock and Jordan were recruiting misses. They may find a home in long or middle relief, but Becker and Mason could both easily cut their teeth in those roles, as Kyle Porter did, in preparation for 2014 rotation slots.

Muse-Fisher has recently proved that he has the stuff to compete against Pac-12 teams as a starter, and soft-tossers like him have succeeded in weekend roles in the past (Oregon ca. 2011 comes to mind), but he'll be more at home during the week, as will Siomkin.

The thing that the 2013 team will have that this year's edition lacks is pitching depth. Granted, it will be young and unproven, but arms like Becker and Mason show a lot of promise, and a healthy Kyle Porter teamed with a durable Logan Scott will give Cal front-line starters with veteran experience. Theofanopoulos is the wild card. His stuff is electric, but he tends to get in his own way and over-think situations. He is a quietly intense competitor with the same kind of fire as this year's Saturday starter Matt Flemer, though he's not as outwardly expressive. That has changed in recent weeks, however.

What this team will need to find are vocal leaders. Paul is quiet, Farney and Campbell are excitable and Matthews isn't a pot-stirrer. The ring leaders will have to be Reuvekamp, Rodriguez -- who watches his game-winning knock against Baylor three times a day since he's been injured this season -- and Porter.

The one concern will be power at the corners. Bruno is a contact bat, as is Celsi. Diede has to prove he can hit college pitching, but has the build to be a gap power guy. If Matthews hits a home run, it will be of the inside-the-park variety. Halamandaris has a ton of pop, and that alone could get him into the lineup at the very least as a late-inning one-swing weapon.

The only real proven power on this team comes from Rodriguez and, to some extent, Knapp. Paul has the ability to go long, but he has to close up a few holes in his swing and really work on driving the ball, and he'll use summer ball to do just that. Farney thinks he has more power than he does, but more than half of his hits this year have been doubles. He needs to play to the gap and not try to hit it over the fence. If he does that, he could drive in runs in the bottom half of the order.

So, there you have it, a hilariously-too-early look at the 2013 Cal baseball team.

Arioto Snags Pitcher of the Week Nod

Cal Release:

BERKELEY - Senior Valerie Arioto pitched the Bears to a 5-0 win over No. 2 Arizona State for the top-ranked California softball team to win its Pac-12 Championship, making her this week's Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.

"It is an awesome accomplishment to be the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week," Arioto said. "My team's defense was behind me the whole time. It's hard to get past them! My teammates provided me with the run support we needed to win the game and the conference."

With the Pac-12 title on the line on Friday afternoon, Arioto pitched seven innings of shutout work, fanning 11 Sun Devils and giving up just one walk. The Bears defeated Arizona State 5-0 to win the title.

Thanks to her 0.00 ERA outing on Friday, Arioto now has a 1.22 ERA, limiting her batters to hit .191, and has a 20-2 record.

This is the fourth Player of the Week honor of Arioto's career, the third of the year and Cal's 80th weekly conference award for the Bears.

Cal begins its 2012 postseason run on Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. PT against Iona in the Berkeley Regional. Tickets are on sale now.

Bears Host Softball Regional

<p><strong>Cal Release: </strong></p>
<p><strong>BERKELEY - </strong>With the Pac-12 title in hand, the No. 1 California softball teamed its 27th consecutive postseason bid and will host the Berkeley Regional as the national No. 1 seed. The Golden Bears will take on Iona. Boston University and Arkansas are also making the trip to Berkeley.</p>
<p>The Golden Bears finished the regular season at 50-4 overall and 21-3 in the Pac-12. Cal is currently ranked first in the RPI and was the unanimous No. 1 team in both the national rankings for the final week of the regular season. The Bears are 23-4 against ranked teams, a marked increase in wins and number of ranked opponents from last season, when they were 12-6.</p>
<p>All-session passes will go on sale on Monday May 14th at 9 a.m. PT. Fans are strongly encouraged to purchase all-session passes as soon as they go on sale because if the all-session passes sellout, day-of, individual game passes will not be available. All-session chairbacks are $55; all-session adult bleacher are $40 and all-session senior/youth(12 Grade and Under)/student bleacher are $25.</p>
<p>The Bears are one of 64 teams who will be competing at 16 regional sites in the first round double-elimination Regionals. The top 16 teams were seeded in order, and the remaining teams were placed in regional brackets to create balanced competition and avoid conference match-ups, when possible. The regional winners will advance to super regional competition for a best-of-three series at eight campus sites. The eight teams that win the Super Regionals will advance to the WCWS, an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. The championship final will be a best-of-three-series. The WCWS will be conducted May 31-June 6 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.</p>
<p>The Bears have played in 11 NCAA Women's College World Series, appearing in last year's WCWS and finishing tied for fifth. The Bears won the National Championship in 2002 and made three consecutive title game appearances from 2002-04.</p>
<p><em><strong>Editor's Note:</strong> Cal has not hosted a softball regional since 1993, the second straight year the Bears hosted in Berkeley. Cal hosted one other time, in 1990.</em></p>

All-Cal Match-Up

On Wednesday afternoon at the O.co Coliseum in Oakland, second-year starter Tyson Ross will take the hill for the Athletics against his former teammate -- Toronto Blue Jays righty Brandon Morrow.

[Read more from BearTerritory.net: Ross, Boesch Reunite in Big Leagues]

Ross was selected with the 57th overall pick in the 2008 Major League First-Year Player Draft by his hometown club, while Morrow became the highest Bear ever picked in the yearly draft when he was taken fifth overall by the Seattle Mariners in 2006.

After an up-and-down career with the Mariners, spending time as both a starter and a closer, Morrow was dealt to the Blue Jays on Dec. 22, 2009.

Both former Bears aces shot through the minors on their way to the big leagues, with Ross making the Opening Day roster for the Athletics in 2010 -- just two years after donning the blue and gold -- while Morrow made the Mariners out of spring training in 2007 -- less than one year after he pitched his last college game.

[Read more from BearTerritory.net: Ross Makes Oakland Homecoming]

Adding to the Cal theme of Wednesday's game is the manager of the Athletics -- former Cal catcher Bob Melvin. A former college teammate of Ross's -- first baseman David Cooper -- is playing for the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas.

It won't just be the Bears that are well-represented at the Coliseum on Wednesday, but the rest of the Pac-12. In the dugout for the A's will be former USC pitchers Tommy Milone and Ryan Cook, Arizona State's Eric Sogard and former Stanford outfielder Michael Taylor. Across the diamond, the Blue Jays have UCLA's Casey Janssen and Ben Francisco.

Morrow was named first-team All-Pac-10 as a junior, going 7-4 with a 2.05 ERA and 97 strikeouts. During his career in Berkeley, Morrow developed from an explosive yet erratic reliever into a dependable starter, finishing up with 140 strikeouts in 151.1 innings and an 8-8 record over three seasons.

Ross was the Sunday starter during Morrow's junior season, and worked his way into the Friday role by the time he was finished, notching a 19-14 career record in 44 starts with a 3.20 ERA over 279.0 innings of work. Ross tossed two complete games for the Bears with 271 strikeouts to just 113 walks.

Briggs to transfer

Monday evening, California tailback Trajuan Briggs confirmed to BearTerritory.net the rumors that he will transfer out of the Bears football program after the end of the academic year.

After suffering a fractured tibia before his senior season at Pacoima (Calif.) Birmingham, a fracture just above the ankle, Briggs rehabbed and was deemed fit to play by the time he decommitted from USC and signed with Cal, but Briggs endured a rash of injuries to his ankle and lower body during his time in Berkeley, and was never able to crack the running back rotation. He did not see any game action for the Bears.

Briggs will finish his finals and then will commence the search for a new school with two years of eligibility remaining.

Bears add walk-on

<p>San Diego (Calif.) Torrey Pines hoopster <strong>Garrett Galvin</strong> has agreed to take a walk-on spot with the Cal basketball team.</p>
<p>Galvin, a 6-foot-4 guard averaged 18.5 points and 3.2 assists for the Falcons this season, adding 2.0 steals per contest and 6.2 boards for his 22-11 squad.</p>
<p>Galvin is a combo-guard who has seen some interest from other Division I schools, including San Diego State.</p>
<p>Galvin is a strong player at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, and is crafty around the basket. He is a plus shooter and ball handler, and a very smart player. His coach <strong>John Olive</strong> has said that he would start at Cal Poly or UC Irvine, and he could compete for minutes at Cal in a year or two.</p>

Miller Inks With Broncos

Cal Release:

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Former Cal tight end Anthony Miller has agreed to terms on an undrafted free agent contract with the Denver Broncos. The two-time honorable mention all-conference selection played in 46 games with 34 starts in four seasons at Cal from 2008-11, compiling totals of 64 receptions for 774 yards and five touchdown catches, the first of which came on his first career reception as a freshman in 2008 and provided the winning score late in the fourth quarter of a 24-17 Emerald Bowl victory over Miami, Fla. Miller added 778 all-purpose yards (774 receiving, four kick return) and two tackles.

Miller had 24 catches for 263 yards and a career-high three touchdown receptions as a senior to earn his second honorable mention all-conference selection from the Pac-12's coaches. He also earned the team's Pappy Waldorf Coaches Award on offense, starting all 13 contests and catching at least one pass in 12 games. In addition, Miller was credited with the first kick return of his career for four yards to give him 267 all-purpose yards. He was twice an honorable mention selection for the College Football Performance Awards' Tight End Performer of the Week after a career-high-tying five catches for a season-high 67 yards at UCLA and the first two-touchdown reception game of his career at Colorado.

Miller played in all 12 games with 11 starts as a junior, contributing 13 receptions for 152 receiving yards and a touchdown catch that came on a 45-yard reception from Brock Mansion at Oregon State and was the longest of his career. He earned honorable mention Tight End Performer of the Week honors from the CFPA after catching a season-high-tying three passes for 53 yards against the Beavers. Miller also had a season-high-tying three catches for a season-high 57 yards receiving at Nevada, including a 32-yard reception from Kevin Riley.

Miller tallied career highs of 26 receptions for 357 yards as a sophomore to rank third on the team in both categories and earn his first honorable mention all-conference selection. He played in 11 contests with 10 starts and recorded at least one catch in each of the last 10 contests he played in after being shut out in the season opener against Maryland.

Miller saw action in 10 games all off the bench as a true freshman, primarily as a backup tight end and on special teams. His one catch came on Cal's last offensive play of the year — a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nate Longshore with 2:41 left in the Emerald Bowl for the game-winning score in the Bears' 24-17 victory over Miami, Fla.

Six former Cal players were selected in the 2012 draft that concluded Saturday including second-round picks in offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz (Cleveland Browns — No. 37 overall) and linebacker Mychal Kendricks (Philadelphia Eagles — No. 46 overall), third-round punter Bryan Anger (Jacksonville Jaguars — No. 70 overall), fifth-round wide receiver Marvin Jones (Cincinnati Bengals — No. 166 overall), and seventh round defensive back D.J. Campbell (Carolina Panthers — No. 216 overall) and defensive lineman Trevor Guyton (Minnesota Vikings, No. 219 overall).

Additional announcements of former Cal players agreeing to terms on undrafted free agent contracts are expected soon but will not be made until official announcements by the NFL team.

Bears See Two Drafted in Second Round

Two former California football players have been taken thus far in the second round of the NFL Draft.

Two weeks ago, offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz told BearTerritory.net that he had been having the most contact with the team that would turn out to be his eventual employers: the Cleveland Browns. He had spoken directly with Mike Holmgren multiple times about the team's needs, which included a wide receiver and a right tackle, and Holmgren all but promised that he would take the 6-foot-6, 313-pounder within the first two rounds, a promise he kept true to on Friday.

With the fifth pick of the second round on Friday evening, the Browns added to their stock of former Golden Bears, with Pro Bowl center Alex Mack now being joined by Schwartz on the line, and linebacker Scott Fujita on defense.

Soon after Schwartz was selected, the Philadelphia Eagles -- already stocked with former Cal talent in wide receiver DeSean Jackson, defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha and offensive lineman Mike Gibson -- picked up Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Mychal Kendricks, with the 14th pick in the second round, 46th overall.

Sunday Baseball Preview

BERKELEY -- The Cal baseball team will go for the series sweep over Washington on Sunday at 1 PM at Evans Diamond, with junior lefty Justin Jones on the hill against an as-yet-unnamed Huskies starter.

"Big one tomorrow," said Saturday's winner Matt Flemer. "I mean, it feels great, but we've got a chance to jump in the standings tomorrow, and if we come out like we did today, we have a real good shot of winning tomorrow, and we've got to get it."

Jones (2-4, 4.97 ERA) had struggled at the start of the campaign after recovering from a nerve injury in his left biceps, suffered at the end of the 2011 season, but made a big stride towards returning to form last Saturday.

"Tomorrow's going to be big for us," said head coach David Esquer. "I hope it's just coming full-circle, where he's ready to be the old Justin Jones. We're going to give him time. We're not faulting him. He didn't pitch all fall. He didn't pitch all summer. Baseball's not that easy. It's just not that easy, and it's no fault of his, it's just that baseball's difficult, and to get the feel and the competitive edge back, it takes a while."

In his last outing against USC, Jones went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out four.

"I think he's finally kind of maybe turned the corner a little bit," said pitching coach Mike Neu. "His arm's feeling good. I don't know if he's as sharp as he wants to be right now, but I think for the first time this year, the ball's coming out of his hand more the way he wants it, and that's a step in the right direction. I think he's going to give us a chance to win. If we can keep building on that, he's going to be solid. Last outing at USC was the best he's thrown all year."

After the game on Saturday, Jones responded to a tough-act-to-follow quip with one of his own: "I've got this."

Saturday Baseball Notebook

BERKELEY -- Despite committing three errors -- the most the Cal baseball team has committed with righty Matt Flemer on the mound -- the senior righty was able to pick up the slack. The Bears have tallied a conference-worst 67 fielding miscues on the season, a far cry from last season, when they were one of the best fielding teams in the conference, with 63 errors in 61 games.

"At that point, it was the Flemer Show," smiled head coach David Esquer, as he spoke of Flemer's dramatic ninth-inning dive for the second out. "He was going to have to have a big hand in ending it, because our supporting cast isn't as supportive as we need them to be."

-- Junior second baseman Tony Renda is now 5-for-7 in the series, with two doubles, a home run, two runs and four RBI. Junior designated hitter Vince Bruno is 4-for-9 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs. In the first two games, the top three hitters in the lineup have combined to go 11-for-23 (.478) with five runs scored.

"I just think that, once my teammates get everything going, it's such a positive atmosphere," Bruno said. "We've been down in this series. It's not like we've been up the whole time, but, even then, our confidence stays up. We know we can hit the guys. We know we have good hitters. We know we have good defense and pitching. Once the confidence starts, that's when the hitting starts. Once you get in a rut, and you don't trust the guy in front of you or the guy behind you, that's when you really start to press, but now that I trust Derek [Campbell] and I trust everyone on the team, everyone's kind of going, it makes my job really easy."

-- True freshman shortstop Chris Paul is 3-for-7 on the series, benefitting from a few bloops and squirts that have fallen in for hits, including a bunt single on Friday that stuck in the grass like a perfect chip shot. Paul came into the series batting just .189 in 18 games, but is now hitting .217.

"He's always been a hitter," Esquer said. "He was described when he came here as the best hitter out of Orange County last year, and hey, sometimes it takes time before you can get the game to feel like it used to feel. It takes a while, but one of the most important things is to be able to stay on the field. That's how you grow up. You play well enough to stay on the field. That's what he's doing. He's playing well enough for us to keep putting him out there."

-- The Bears enjoyed a large crowd of nearly 700 spectators on Saturday, and on the season, have drawn 6,282 fans to Evans Diamond in 13 home dates for a 483 average attendance. Last season, in 24 home dates, Cal drew 11,001 fans for a 458 average. The Bears have 12 home games left, and are on pace to draw 12,078 this season. On Saturday, the crowd included several members of the Cal basketball team, Cal Athletics Hall-of-Famer Bob Milano and the parents of program alumnus Tyson Ross, who will be called back up to the Oakland Athletics early next week to serve as the fifth starter. Before going down with an oblique injury last season, Ross went 3-3 with a 2.75 ERA in 36.0 innings of work over nine appearances and six starts.

"It's been pretty amazing," Esquer said. "I almost feel like the people in the stands are stakeholders. They're the people that followed us and gave some money and did some things and they want to come and see what their investment is all about. We've had great crowds all year long, even on the Monday versus Stanford we had a great crowd, and we've had a couple Tuesday games that have been the best since I've been here. There's a lot of people interested, and I almost feel like they're stakeholders."

Bears Invited to Anaheim Classic

<p><strong>Cal Release:</strong></p>
<p><strong>BERKELEY —</strong> The California men's basketball team is among the eight teams that have been selected to play in the 2012 Anaheim Classic, the same tournament that junior guard <strong>Justin Cobbs</strong> played in, while still a freshman at Minnesota. The sixth-annual three-day tournament will be held over Thanksgiving weekend—Thursday, Friday, and Sunday (Nov. 22, 23, and 25)—at the Anaheim Convention Center, adjacent to Disneyland.</p>
<p>The Golden Bears will join Drake, Drexel, Georgia Tech, Pacific, Rice, Saint Mary's College (CA), and Xavier. Cal, Saint Mary's, and Xavier were each participants in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.</p>
<p>The Anaheim Classic will feature 12 games over the three-day schedule, with each team playing one game per day. They will advance through a bracket-tournament format and the two teams that remain undefeated face off in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 25.</p>
<p>The inaugural Anaheim Classic was played in 2007 and was won by USC. In the following years, Wake Forest (2008), West Virginia (2009), UNLV (2010), and Saint Louis (2011), were all tournament winners. Each champion has gone on to qualify for that year's NCAA Tournament as a top-eight seed.</p>
<p>In Cal's sole preseason tournament of 2011-12, the Bears advanced to the championship game of the Progressive College Basketball Experience (CBE) Classic by defeating George Washington, Austin Peay, and Georgia before falling to Missouri in the championship game.</p>
<p>The Bears tied for second in the Pac-12's inaugural season with a 13-5 record in league games. In each of head coach <strong>Mike Montgomery</strong>'s four years at Cal, the Bears have finished among the top four in the conference and advanced to play in the postseason; three times to the NCAA tournament.</p>
<p>Cal will be led by last season's leading scorer and rebounder, junior guard <strong>Allen Crabbe</strong>, who was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference first team after averaging 15.2 points per game. Cobbs, an All-Pac-12 honorable mention, finished second in the conference with 5.1 assists per game. Sophomore forward <strong>David Kravish</strong> notched 41 blocked shots; eighth most in a single season at Cal, en route to being named to the five-man Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.</p>
<p>Fans can purchase official hotel accommodations and game tickets by calling <a target="_blank">(888) 632-6951</a>.</p>

Murray to Leave Program

The California basketball team lost a third member of its 2010 signing class on Tuesday, as guard Emerson Murray has decided to transfer, two sources within the program confirmed.

A third independent source indicated that Murray may transfer to another program, possibly on the West Coast, though his destination has yet to be confirmed.

Murray figured to see his playing time diminish with the additions of four-star 2012 signee Tyrone Wallace and the eligibility of Missouri transfer Ricky Kreklow coming into effect next season. Murray will transfer to another program where he has a better chance to play.

The departure of Murray follows the transfer to Baylor by Gary Franklin, and Murray's roommate Alex Rossi leaving the team to address "family issues, and needed to move closer to home."

No word yet from the program if they intend to sign an additional player tomorrow (April 11).

The Bears are big players for Polish big man Przemek Karnowski, Sami Eleraky out of Denmark, Los Angeles Price product Kahlil Johnson and four-star center Robert Upshaw.

UPDATE: Johnson, if he signs, would replace Murray in the scholarship count. The transfer of Renaldo Woolridge, who has been granted a hardship waiver from Tennessee, is, according to a source within the Cal program, "just a rumor."

DeBoskie-Johnson to transfer

BERKELEY -- Senior tailback Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson has left the California football program.

On Tuesday, head coach Jeff Tedford said that DeBoskie-Johnson is "not with us," and is currently looking for a destination.

"[It's] just for the opportunity to play," Tedford said. "He's graduating this semester, and so he's obviously a senior and to get on the field a little bit more."

DeBoskie-Johnson figured to be buried on the depth chart behind starter Isi Sofele, seniors Mike Manuel and C.J. Anderson, as well as talented youngsters Brendan Bigelow, Darren Ervin and Daniel Lasco, with junior Dasarte Yarnway and sophomore Trajuan Briggs also in the mix.

Tedford said that the Bears will help DeBoskie-Johnson out in his quest to find a new home, where he would have one year to play. Last season, DeBoskie-Johnson rushed 10 times for 40 yards and caught four passes for 42 yards.

Kendricks Has Big Day at Combine

Former Cal linebacker and 2011-12 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Mychal Kendricks had a big day at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine on Monday, when he finished as the top linebacker in the 40-yard dash (4.47), vertical jump (39.5) and broad jump (10'7"), tying for fifth overall at the combine in both the vertical and broad jump. He also had a time of 4.19 in the 20-yard shuttle that was the fifth fastest for linebackers.

"I'm a hard worker, tough, I want to win … I'm a competitor," Kendricks told media after the performance.

His performance Monday followed up his 24 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press on Sunday that was tied for 11th at the combine among linebackers.

Kendricks' 4.47-second 40-yard time was the best for inside linebackers over the past 12 seasons of combine participants.

Former Bears defensive lineman Trevor Guyton also went through his measurable drills at the combine on Monday, recording a 5.07 40-yard dash, a 31.0 inch vertical jump, an 8'9" broad jump, a time of 7.45 in the 3 cone drill and a mark of 4.53 in the 20-yard shuttle.

Safety Sean Cattouse will be the final of six former Cal players to wrap up his work at the NFL Combine when he goes through measurable drills on Tuesday.

Punter Bryan Anger, offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz and wide receiver Marvin Jones also participated in the NFL Combine.

Anger and Schwartz wrapped up their combine participation on Saturday. Both players ran the 40-yard dash, with Anger's 4.75 40-yard dash the sixth-fastest of all players to be tested on Saturday. Position groups running the event on Saturday included special teams players, specialists, offensive linemen and tight ends. Each of the five participants to run the 40-yard dash faster than Anger were tight ends, while Auburn long snapper Josh Harris (4.93) was the only other specialist to finish among the top 10 Saturday as he tied for 10th.

Schwartz posted times of 5.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 7.86 seconds in the 3-cone drill and 4.87 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle, while his vertical jump was 26.5 inches and his broad jump seven feet, five inches. He had posted a personal-best 23 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press on Friday.

Jones finished up his activities on Sunday when he went through his final six measurable drills of the four-day event. Jones ran a 4.46 40-yard dash that ranked 12th for wide receivers and was one-hundredth of a second out of the top 15 overall. Jones' top finish was a fourth-place showing among wide receivers in the 3 cone drill (6.81) that is tied for 12th overall through Monday. Jones was tied for sixth among wide receivers and is tied for 15th overall through Monday in the 20-yard shuttle with a time of 4.11. In the 60-yard shuttle, he recorded a mark of 11.47 to tie for 10th among receivers. Jones also participated in the vertical jump (33") and broad jump (9' 4"). Jones started his measurable drills with the bench press on Saturday and posted 22 repetitions of 225 pounds to rank tied for first among all receivers.

Week 2 Baseball Rankings

<p>After going 4-2 over the first two weekends of the 2012 baseball season, California is beginning to make some noise in the national polls. While losing a three-game series to Long Beach State this weekend, two games to one, caused the Bears to drop from No. 22 to just outside the <em>USA Today</em> Coaches Poll Top 25, Cal did pick up some ground in other polls.</p>
<p>In the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, the Bears check in at No. 28, just ahead of No. 29 USC (7-0). UCLA came in at No. 25, with Oregon State at No. 24 and Oregon at No. 23. Arizona checked in at No. 14, with Arizona State at 11 and Stanford at No. 2.</p>
<p>Cal is still No. 26 in the NCAA Baseball RPI, up from No. 31 the previous week.</p>
<p>According to <em>Collegiate Baseball</em>, the Bears are the No. 25 team in the land, just ahead of No. 26 Oregon State and No. 28 UCLA. Arizona comes in at No. 18, Oregon at No. 15, Arizona State at No. 11 and Stanford at No. 3 in that particular poll.</p>

Defense Impresses as Opening Day Draws Near

BERKELEY -- With the 2012 college baseball opener coming up ever so quickly for California, it appears as though the Bears will be hitting the diamond against Pacific on Friday without junior first baseman Devon Rodriguez.

'The Big Cat,' as he's affectionately called by his teammates, did not practice on Tuesday, standing on the side with his knee wrapped and braced after an unspecified injury suffered while diving for a ball on Friday.

In his place at first were tight end Jacob Wark and sophomore Andrew Knapp.

Knapp -- a catcher by trade, an outfielder in a pinch and now a first baseman by necessity -- looked quite nimble manning first, and while he does not have Wark's raw power, is a versatile bat with superior gap power.

Knapp was set to see most of his time as the designated hitter this season, while regularly spelling two-time All-Pac-10 backstop Chadd Krist behind the dish to prepare for a starting role behind the plate in 2013, but now, with Rodriguez down, he'll move over to first, opening up the DH spot for senior Danny Oh, who has come on strong through fall and spring practice.

Oh taking over the DH spot eases the outfield logjam a bit, but by no means solves it. Granted, it is a good problem for head coach David Esquer to have, given the talented bats available. Junior Vince Bruno -- who posted a team-leading .392 on-base percentage and two outfield assists in 2011 -- will likely take his strong arm to right field, with projected right fielder Oh as the DH, with athletic senior Chad Bunting manning center and junior speedster and bunter extraordinaire Darrell Matthews in left.

During live infield drills, Knapp acquitted himself well with the leather, picking several tough throws in the dirt and showing great athleticism and flexibility in stretching for throws off the bag. During relay drills, Knapp showed good instincts on the cut off, despite not being a natural first baseman. With Knapp manning first, sophomore Alex Egber has moved to the No. 2 catcher behind Krist. Egber is also a member of the campus Navy ROTC, and is a well-build backstop. His arm won't open eyes, but he handles pitchers well.

Though, at 6-foot-1, Knapp does not possess Wark's 6-foot-3 altitude, he more than makes up for it with leaping ability, showing good body control and awareness to come down on the bag.

Knapp didn't have to take flight too much, though. Infield defense looks to be one of this team's strengths, with a stable of strong, accurate arms and, as a group, far-above-average range.

Notable throughout spring practice has been sophomore shortstop Derek Campbell. Campbell can make just about every throw on the diamond, ranging to his left up the middle, and to his right in the hole. Campbell is almost always on the money with his strong delivery, and when he has to spin around on a tough grounder behind the bag, he locates his target and fires very quickly. Campbell is a defensive upgrade at the shortstop position over Chicago White Sox draftee Marcus Semien, and he'll save more than his fair share of runs as he learns how to hit consistently at the college level. With the other bats in the lineup, any production over .250 from Campbell in the nine-hole will be an added bonus.

During live infield with hitters at the plate, Campbell barehanded a ball between the pitcher's mound and the second base bag and made a strong throw to first, just barely beat out by the speedy Matthews.

Third baseman Mitch Delfino has continued his improvement with the leather at third. On one play during live infield, the powerful junior ranged to his left, gloved a grounder, spun and delivered a perfect throw to first. He then ranged right, up the third base line, to glove a scorcher by do-everything sophomore Mike Reuvekamp. He then set his feet and fired across his body to nail Reuvekamp at first.

Reuvekamp may turn out to be one of the more valuable reserves on the infield, in his own right, playing third, short and second. The former catcher out of Diablo Valley College has a very quick exchange and is a scrappy fielder, extending his range with dives and slides. He's definitely not afraid to get dirty.

Another newcomer to watch will be freshman Chris Paul. Paul made a sliding stop to his left while playing short and turned to make a strong throw to nail the runner at third during live infield.

At the dish, Paul impressed with gap-to-gap power, and the ball really jumps off of his bat.

Starting pitcher Matt Flemer threw a lengthy bullpen session with pitching coach Mike Neu, and showed consistent arm action between his fastball and off-speed stuff. His curve and change were particularly sharp, and his fastball showed good life.

In recruiting news, the Bears have secured a commitment from Granite Bay (Calif.) athlete Aaron Knapp, the younger brother of Andrew and the son of former Cal standout backstop Mike Knapp, who starred for the Bears in 1985 and 1986. Like his older brother, Aaron hits from both sides of the plate. Aaron plays outfield, catcher and second base for the Grizzly Bears, but will come in as a center fielder for the 2013 class. As a sophomore, Knapp hit .267 in 27 games, with six RBI, two doubles and a team-best 25 runs. He worked 21 walks and boasted an OBP of .411.

Bears Open With Win Over Lady Vols

California senior Valerie Arioto has been on the shelf for more than a year after breaking her leg on the second day of practice last year, but one of the nation's best women's softball players came back with a bang in the No. 3 Bears' season opener against No. 9 Tennessee, drilling two home runs in rout to a 13-5 win.

The fifth-year senior hammered her 32nd and 33rd homers of her career -- including a shot to center field in her very first at-bat -- as Cal pulled away late over the Lady Vols in Tempe, Ariz., behind a complete game from starter Jolene Henderson, who allowed nine hits and five runs while striking out five and walking eight.

The Bears start the road to Oklahoma City with a 1-0 record while Tennessee falls to 1-1.

Senior third baseman Jace Williams and true freshman catcher Danielle Henderson -- behind the plate for her big sister Jolene -- also chipped in with circuit shots, as Cal clawed back from an early 3-1 deficit.

After Arioto's 3-1 homer in the top of the first put the Bears on top, the Vols came back with a vengeance in the bottom of the frame. Senior Tennessee third baseman Ashley Andrews laid down a bunt single to lead off the frame, and was followed by a full-count walk to Lauren Gibson from Henderson, who then surrendered a soft line-drive single into left off the bat of Madison Shipman and issued a walk to Cheyanne Tarango to plate the Vols' first run of the game. An infield single from Shelby Burchell brought Gibson home and put Tennessee up 3-1.

Cal tied things up in the top of the second thanks to a bases-loaded passed ball on Vols catcher Hannah Akamine and then a wild pitch from starter Ivy Renfroe.

Tennessee added another run in the bottom of the second to take the lead, but following a walk to Arioto in the top of the third, Williams struck with her first longball of the season and the fourth of her career, putting one out to left center. Freshman shortstop Cheyenne Cordes -- making the first start of her Cal career -- worked a walk, and then Danielle Henderson crushed a four-bagger to right.

In the top of the fourth, designated player Britt Vonk worked a walk, and rode home on Arioto's second blast of the game -- over not only the outfield fence, but a second fence behind that.

It was all but academic by the top of the seventh, as the Bears added another trio of runs on run-scoring hits from Cordes, pinch-hitter Lindsey Ziegenhirt and a near-homer by Frani Echavarria, which glanced off the top railing of the outfield wall and bounced back in for an RBI single to plate Cordes.

On Saturday, the Bears play their first doubleheader of the season with an 8 a.m. PT game against Bradley and a 10:30 a.m. PT match-up with Texas State.

Notebook
The Bears now hold a 4-0 all-time record with the Vols
... Danielle Henderson notched her first homer in a Bear uniform ... Cordes, Danielle Henderson and Breana Kostreba made their first Cal starts
...
